Great video. They need to separate all blood pacts to their own timers instead of locking them behind rage and ward with a universal cooldown. There’s no reason why Ifrit’s fire 2 and flaming crush have the same recast timer. Apogee would be redundant but they make it do something else. If they do this then summoner can also act as a main healer in a party with Carbuncle. Reduce the cure based blood pacts to a similar recast timers as a normal cure and curaga spell. Edit: Actually, keep Apogee as it is. It can be used to use the same blood pact twice in a row. Also, all of the special blood pacts locked behind Astral Flow {Inferno, Tidal Wave, Judgement Bolt, Earthen Fury, Aerial Bast, Diamond Dust, Searing Light, Howling Moon, Ruinous Omen, and Altana's Favor} should be normal blood pacts that still consume all of your mp but are further enhanced with Astral Flow active.
I agree 100% with this video plus I would add Bahamut as avatar. Focused on magic attack bonus trait and avatar's favor. Mega Flare would be the astral flow move with additional effect of magic defense down. :) (kinda like geo and indy spells that increase magic attack and those that lower magic defense)
I don't play SMN, so I may be wrong, but I think SMN should have gotten Bahamut right around the time in Cop, and it still has not come to pass. Obviously having Mega Flare as a blood pact
I like all those suggestions. SMN stands out to me as one of the few pet jobs out there that really makes the pet the main focus, and the summoner is really the support character! So I'm always happy to see suggestions that solidify that identity more. And I agree that SMN is really a good candidate for a support role.
At least summoner has a use, I played summoner for years in the early days of FFXI. They used to miss attacks 90% of the time on anything high level. Back when 90% of the game was accuracy. You only had 1 ability you could use every like 2-3min I think it was. Almost no one but the most dedicated played smn for years. Even getting the actual first set of summons was a huge deal, since you needed max town rank, for each town to even get to fight them, so most people just had elements lol. Carby was the only summon that was free, with the mitts and some other gear. Our job back then, you know, when people used party for XP. Was to pull for the party, and then every 2-3min, pop haste, or stone skin. That was it, that was the life of a summoner, and you lucky to even make it into a group, you were pretty much last choice pick. Terrible DD, pretty terrible support, split pulls was the only thing they did well. I really would of loved to of seen the FFXI team make them better buffers and party support, back when parties were the way of life in ffxi. It wasn't until people found out about AF parties, that all the sudden everyone had a smn to burn for gil. Right around the time Abyssea was released, and the level cap was increased. Everyone wanted to get into an AF party so they could get burned up to level 30 or whatever was needed to enter Abyssea for box duty (aka afk leveling). Anyways lol, having been a smn for years, I had every pc of gear in the game besides a Nirvana so I was deemed useless and no one wanted me to do any endgame stuff with it. Perhaps things have changed these days and more weapons are available, but IMO the worst part about FFXI over all my many years playing, was the gear checking and judging people just on that alone. No mythic, your garbage. Unless your a WHM then you can have the most shit gear the game, and people will still want you. Anyways! Good ideas. I miss what this game used to be, and the community it used to have. Never found a game like it since.
Everything about this is mostly right, if you didn't have a relic fully done it was no point. Problem is how do people expect you to get the relic fully done w/o doing the content, you could farm for gil but that would take years and u would prolly die from boredom. When I did level smn I mostly got the same random pug leads i met in dunes when i acted as a healer and buff and luckily i had all smns as well. It wasn't until we got Fenrir that we became decently viable for lvling partys (next to bard or cor as always).
Omg yes! On one hand… I loved ffxi and it was my first mmo. I never found another one like it. I don’t like ff14. It doesn’t have the same heart and community to me. Ffxi made me FEEL like I was really in vanadiel and everything was so hard that I really did feel the danger and also the accomplishment of things. It was my dream to be a summoner when I started and because I was a teenager I didn’t understand how much they screwed SMN. SMN should’ve been the strongest mage class in the game. It should’ve been DD and support. It should’ve been super popular. But because of how they built it… we were just treated as second tier healers. It really really sucked to play as one. Getting all these super cool summons and not even able to use them. The avatars should’ve all been more powerful. Carbuncle and spirits should’ve cost 0 MP to maintain. The other avatars should’ve cost half of what they did so we could actually freaking use them for long periods of time. They also dropped the ball ok spirits. Why were they even in the game? They should’ve given them a special role somehow. Maybe support? And we should’ve been able to fully choose what spells they used. Even tho ffxi was really great it was also really stupid and made really limiting choices. As a summoner you summon GODS. Why then were we so weak and useless? It made no sense. Same with no male mithra or female Galka. It made no sense and the storyline they came up with was bull crap. EVERYONE wanted male mithra but they forced us to only have girls. And even tho not many people wanted female galka, it still should’ve been an option. Seeing the female Roe in ff14 makes me mad we didn’t get anything in ff11. Honestly, they tried that same stupid thing when ff14 came out and there were NO male miqo’te. Then the game bombed so hard that they gave us them. FF11 would’ve been great if they had actually listened to the gamers. FF11 just needed them to listen to us, but in ff14 it’s swung the complete opposite way and seems too simple and almost like a final fantasy theme park. I couldn’t get immersed at all. Anyway, I was a diehard SMN main for years. And I kind of just suffered in silence lol because I loved the concept of summoners so so much ever since playing FFX. So many hours spent waiting for party invites. Sometimes I wouldn’t even get a party. And then parties themselves were so boring and dull. This was before they played battle music for mages. So I just sat there struggling to heal everyone. God it was awful. I honestly hated being a summoner due to the mechanics but the only jobs I had ever played were whm and then smn. So I didn’t know anything else. But then one fateful day I got so tired of it that I picked up bard. And OMG. That job was so damn fun. So useful. So adored by everyone. I never even had to look for a party. People would just reach out. I could really tell how much I helped out, especially as a good bard. I had so many options! Didn’t have to ever worry about MP. Never got killed from aggro. Never had to rest. It was SO fun! I was pissed I had stuck with smn for soooo long. I show up to level 75 so damn fast! I don’t even remember ever struggling. The XP came in hot. Now, bard is my favorite class. And even though I love summoner in theory, I know FF will never do it justice. They never learned their lesson and even the SMN in ff14 looks like it sucks.
@@maverickbull1909the SMN in FFXIV is pretty cool, especially at the time you wrote this. While I wish they were still real pet, the way it feels is a lot better. Due to how simple it is to XI, especially with status effects and such, it's more of straight DD. It used to use a lot of DoTs, but now it feels like you're actually fighting with an army of summons. I'll describe max level rotation. Carby is out be default but doesn't fight (they removed pets to be able to better keep up with the evolving mechanics). When Carby is out, you have access to a personal shield for the smn and an occasional dmg buff. You then summon Bahamut who will fire mini flares at each cast you do, while the smn channels his power and nukes. Then you can choose between Garuda, titan and ifrit, which just depends on your buffs and how you wanna do. Each time you summon one, they appear and do their Astral Flow and you channel their power to do a couple moves, while cycling through the three. When these three show up, they don't stay. You get Carby back, so plenty chances to keep his shield up for defense. Ifrit's abilities are higher dmg and instant, but definitely want shield as one is a charge. Garuda comes with a cast time so gotta time her right if you want most from boosts. Titan gives the most hits but slightly weaker. After you go through the three elementals, you can then summon and channel Phoenix, who also attacks with each cast (she and Bahamut remain for their durations) and can give a really potent regen. By there being no cast time for summons and you constantly changing through them, it feels more rewarding than XI smn. XI is still more fun on the gameplay side for me though. I love the complexity. It was also my first MMO. But the fact that you had to take certain things in consideration that I haven't seen in any other MMO. For example, your moghouse wasn't just for design. How you styled it gave you certain bonuses, like reduced xp loss on death. Then before you even set out, had to think about where you were going and what monsters you'd face. Were you a drg? Then maybe don't want to go with the guys hunting skeletons. So after taking weapons and dmg types into consideration, do you have enough food and drink to maintain buffs for as long as you'll be out? Do you have an auto-raise scroll or reraise earring? Do you have a warp scroll or accessory so you can escape? Not a RDM or WHM (later NIM and DNC), then do you have enough sneak oils and invis powders to get where you need to be? Do you have a deodorizer or two in case you're being chased and there's no water to run thru and they lose your scent? If you're NIN, do you have enough tools? If you're BST, got your jugs for emergency? If you're DRG, do you have the right sub to get the best wyvern for the hunt? Is this a good place for you or your party to rest? All those things needed to be taken into account, especially during the glory days of the lv75 Era. So whether you were going to farm craft materials, xp grind, hunt a boss, do missions, progress the story, do random quests for fame or just explore and find all the secrets that were never even hinted at, it felt like you were preparing for an adventure. A 20 year old game did that. It was things like that which made the world feel lived in. I also used to love doing Besieged and Garrisons. The feeling of defending the city or an outpost from an all out attack was great. ......time to return to Vana'diel.... again... once more!!!
Sounds pretty cool. Though I think part of Fenrir's charm is the flavor. You don't necessarily need to decapitate it, either. You could raise the base line 0% moon phase buff to what you suggest, and then have minor increments of even higher buff at better/specific moon phases. What do you think about also updating the master's traits to get some stuff like BST got with the accuracy while pet engaged on same target and stuff like that?
I would suggest 2 more additional adjustments to fix SMN. 1: Remove Astral Conduit. 1a: can replace it with an ability that gives BP DMG+100% & BP effect & duration +100%. 1b: or replace it with Enspirit, but instead of being 5min duration, 1hr duration. 2: Remove the nerf to SMN damage when being repeated too rapidly. (like a single volt strike who's initial hit does full dmg but additional hits are actually nerf'd by the conduit nerf) This way Apogee can be used for Rage again instead of only Wards.
You're like the only FF11 content creator these days. I wish we got more vids on 11 these days cause as a 14 player i am so curious about the MMO that started it all
There's a couple people like hunting4games, callmekwech, rikapedia, basicguardian, a few others but they aren't as in depth as Rua. I love his job guides.
Idk how y’all even play that game after playing FFXI first. I tried it. I got to Lv40 when the game 1st launched via soloing nonstop that it made me remember why FFXI was my all-time favorite Final Fantasy game ever made. 14 plays exactly like WoW. I grew up playing FF. Idc about WoW at all whatsoever and 14 only confirmed that.
@@metalgear- It’s easier to access and the story is really good. But it’s more based as a solo game where FF11 really pushed for team building. I like both
@@metalgear-exactly. That’s why it’s so popular. It follows the WoW play style instead of building on ff11 like I thought. I also couldn’t get into it.
I actually have had a bug report filed since November 2021 about the SMN Blood Pact nerf behaving incorrectly. About 7-8 weeks ago a GM contacted me in game for more details and assured me they are taking the report quite seriously. I honestly don't mind if they completely remove conduit for a new SP 2, if that's what they have to do to remove the 8 second penalty between Blood pacts. But yeah, they are aware Blood Pacts get the penalty on apogee, and even on other summoner's avatars while trying to skillchain. Here's hoping if they do decide to fix it, they come up with a decent remedy.
But wait what about Atomos? Cait Sith has its usage but I almost rarely seem Atomos called (unless I'm just out of date and Atomos has been getting used then which case nevermind)
Atomos is useful for being able to constantly remove buffs (it appears to have 100% accuracy, and doesn't require BP: Ward to be off cooldown so you can spam it out), and then transfer them to the whole party. It's insanely powerful for its very narrow interaction, but not something that you will use except for specific scenarios
Regarding Astral Flow Blood Pacts, why not add an ability like with Blu did with Unbridled Wisdom and Unbridled Learning. A one minute duration, 10 minute recast that allows a single use of a Astral Flow BP. And for the summonable avatars of Alex and Odin, aside from the obvious choice of just shrinking them, there are small (and crappy) versions of them used during the ToAU storyline.
Smn certainly needs a buff. Ive been saying similar for awhile especially in regards to the 21 second blood pact timer. Just way to slow. One nitpick tho there are like 4 job abilities that reduce other players enmity so that whole line was weird.
Summoner was my favorite 99 era job. Don't get me wrong I like 99SCH and my 99BLM but they ALL use RDM as sub and endless MP for Summoner was game changer vs SCH 75 ERA had sub and ability to reduce cost. BLM 75 era had conserve MP gear and SCH sub gave you him MP ability as well as increase Damage. 75 Summoner had his own ability to get mp from a element but you to cast the element and sub SCH you had SCH ability but it slowly kills you and in a tight spot you don't want that when stoneskin down. You get 250 MP from it vs Full MP from convert sub RDM and Refresh.
I quit a long, long time ago, but my possibly outdated changes (which are mostly compatible with what you said) were like this: -Ability that instantly swap avatars/spirits on the spot, keeping TP and having almost no animation 'cost'. Maybe with limitations / bonuses based on elemental wheel. -Ward and Rage timers further broken down into multiple timers akin to SCH (with two sets of timers). This will a lot more use of pet abilities and can balance them by having them cost more than 1 (especially if buffed). -The ability to gain magic skill from spirits (likely from an ability which persists after switching). When you cast a spell that spirit can use, you use your summoning skill instead of elemental, healing, etc. I imagine it would required to further just give spells to the SMN for this to matter. -Avatar Favor being straight up Bard songs (at their best), but I think that probably won't work anymore. I feel like problem with buffer classes is that they rarely ever compete and just make each other better at the expense of having more DD - less of a SMN thing.
I started playing this game in 2006 on my Xbox 360 I an played for years I stopped roughly around 2012 beacuse ps4 came out an I wanted one an sadly square never ported it to ps4 an dropped it from console all together I have not played since I play alot of ffxiv on ps5 now an when I tell other summoners that never played ff11 that they have it easy now cause all our summons are given to us when we lvl up before we had to fight em an earn there respect first man those were the days
Took me 2 minutes to realise this wasn't bout 14 as I was mostly just listening lol. No idea how summoners work in 11 but still seems like some nice ideas
I'd be thrilled if all avatars shared close to the same damage with at least 1 BP rage. Sometimes it gets kinda boring always using the same avatars for damage. Garuda/Leviathan 99 Rage when?
You make a ton of fantastic points, but I'm kinda torn on the idea of -completely- removing the wonky effects from Diabolos and Fenrir. Not all effects are usable in all circumstances anyway, so it could just add another layer to strategy. Not so much as "We gotta wait 6 RL hours for the next moon phase", but with other sources it could give a neat dichotomy to their effects. FFXI has always had a bunch of stuff with weird rules and requirements, and I think it suits its strategic and optimizing nature. Either way, I think I'd be happy with any amount of attention for the job. And I don't mean to dispute the importance of practicality in 2022's FFXI.
It's so sad to see 1 of my fav classes still shit :( FYI if Sq cannot find the code source or w/e the reason is just make new variations carbunkle 2 ect just like with some trusts that were replaced with better versions
Square ENIX is nerf happy it’s unlikely they will change anything for SMN or any job anymore. I mean If they update jobs they take away much more than what they give it seems.
No love for atomos :( its ok no body uses it for nothing anyway lmao, anyway yeah i agree pretty much on alot of those points, enspirit sounds super usefull as well
The issue with Atomos is that you can only absorb one buff at a time and it also takes a long time for the summoning process to be performed. You are locked out of being able to do anything other than sub job related things during that process. If there were to be any update to Atomos it would have to be an increase in the amount of buffs taken. At least three buffs. They would also have to extend the duration of the buffs as well because it's just not worth casting when you remove a buff that only lasts for 23 seconds.
@@GSWmimic yeah ppl forget about atomos pretty much because of that which is why i belive it needs a rework even more then odin and would be in line with the video.
I'm pretty much in full agreement. SMN needs to be more focused on their support. They've got some amazing buffs/favors but having to switch can really hurt them. Having a second favor kept up on others will help this. A lot of the job suffers from still suffers from being stuck in a 75 Era mentality. Buffs jobs are more important than ever so getting them better at that will certainly help them. Likewise, Odin, Alexander, and time based avatar buffs need to be updated for the modern Era.
I could listen to this guy speak for hours and never get bored
Really? His voice is so flat, monotone, and dry that I want to die
Your voice is buttery smooth and makes me want biscuits.
As main SMN for 20 years..... i agree with everything here.
Make "/localsettings blureffect off" the default setting - That'll fix SMN rather nicely!
Great video. They need to separate all blood pacts to their own timers instead of locking them behind rage and ward with a universal cooldown. There’s no reason why Ifrit’s fire 2 and flaming crush have the same recast timer. Apogee would be redundant but they make it do something else.

Amazing video. I’ve been thinking the same thing for a very long time. Job well done my friend.

I like all those suggestions. SMN stands out to me as one of the few pet jobs out there that really makes the pet the main focus, and the summoner is really the support character! So I'm always happy to see suggestions that solidify that identity more. And I agree that SMN is really a good candidate for a support role.
Walked in looking for a SMN guide.... left awoken! This man did 80% of the job SE the rest is on you.
I like those changes. I love pet jobs but I decided to focus on PUP but if SMN had the changes you suggested I could see myself swapping over.
Thanks for keep making FFXI videos, I'm looking forward to the future all job adjustments.

I like both
Most make HorizonXI prive server content now.
@@metalgear-exactly. That’s why it’s so popular. It follows the WoW play style instead of building on ff11 like I thought. I also couldn’t get into it.
I just picked up summoner today. Seems pretty fun too. As if I need a other job to gear and stuff alongside my rdm, dnc and pup
Totaly agreed, Also some Frame for pup should go that way too ( blm , whm , rdm .....)
Fantastic suggestions
I quit a long, long time ago, but my possibly outdated changes (which are mostly compatible with what you said) were like this:
-Ability that instantly swap avatars/spirits on the spot, keeping TP and having almost no animation 'cost'.
It doesn’t it’s vpowerful in the right hands. You know who u are , fend
I think they should let you equip avatar with equipment like pup.
It's so sad to see 1 of my fav classes still shit :( FYI if Sq cannot find the code source or w/e the reason is just make new variations carbunkle 2 ect just like with some trusts that were replaced with better versions
Bahamut. Bahamut would fix smn
Square ENIX is nerf happy it’s unlikely they will change anything for SMN or any job anymore. I mean If they update jobs they take away much more than what they give it seems.
Summoner guide??
SquareEnix please do this for summoner for the love of GOD!!!!!
I'm confused. Isn't XI like classic WOW in that it's a finished/done MMO and not updated anymore?
Its updated each month with new content/updates. In fact they are rolling out a new story expansion by releasing it in parts every few months.
Look at FFXIV Summoner, Copy, Paste, Done.
