Marco gave the Martian separatists the star system that they wanted and call Laconia (the old name for Sparta) and the Laconians have mined their side of the Laconia Ring. Marco plans to control the Ring-space and control the access that humanity has to the other worlds. Babbage's bracelet was not part of the uniform and therefore unacceptable to wear since Laconians appear to be even more totalitarian than Mars might have been.

@@IanM92 Remember the principle of asymmetric warfare? As long as Marco controls Medina Station and the Ring-space he is actually able to control when/where all of the other political actors (Earth, Mars, Belt, Laconia, etc.) are able to travel outside of their selected star systems. Marco "gave" the separatists Laconia by granting them passage through the Ring-space to that system, rather than contesting it with them and causing grievous losses to both sides.

Ah yes, Laconia. The biggest Opening Credits easter egg this season.
It's interesting to note that, back in S05E02 (Alex visiting the War College), Sauveterre wore a unique patch on his left shoulder: a black Spartan helmet over a yellow shield. Back then, old Sparta was located in a place called Laconia. And, as described by Babbage near the end of this episode, Laconia embodies a "truer" vision of what Mars was supposed to be. So yeah, neo-Spartans, but a lot more badass than the original ones.
Funny how a 'dishonorable discharge' in Laconia automatically means an execution (or worse). Seriously, these guys makes Capt. Sobel in Band of Brothers look like Buddha.

When reading the books I just always called them Space Nazis.
But your mention of the shoulder patch does make me wonder. How long has Admiral Duarte been planning this? Was there an original plan to overthrow the Martian government? Remember Babbage said “I’ve been waiting for this my entire life”.
This makes me feel like Duarte and his hardcore faction have been around for quite a while. But the creation of the Ring and the promise of living worlds to conquer gave them a new focus.

@@technopirate304 Good question. I think the Laconians have more of a .. idealist-fundamentalist view when interpreting the Martian vision and philosophy. Clearly the mass exodus of the more pragmatic Martians affected them greatly, fearing obsolescence.
Their faction probably started carrying out their plans just as the Roci was coming home from their first trip from the Ring, reaching out to Marco while doing a little "creative writing" down at Logistics.
It's kinda sad though, what Mars is going through right now. You could even see it in the opening credits (specifically the Mariner Valley ext. shot), where a lot of the lights in the windows where shutting down.

@@technopirate304 Since the rings opened , new worlds became avalaible and Mars society lost its reason to be.. at that point when Mars began to fall its when certain hardcore military elements began to consider that their ideals are not shared by the majority of Martians anymore and they would be better off alone somewhere else .. then somehow they discover what lies on Laconia and that pulls their plans in motion.
Bear in mind Laconia has been there since the very first episode of season 4.. when 4 Belter ships run the blockade and force their way into 4 rings.. one of them is the Barbapiccola to Illus.. the other 3 are said to not be heard of again.. but when Avasarala is explaining the issue to Holden one of the 4 rings is labeled as "Laconia".. oi havent read yet books 6 onward so my guess is that either those Belters found that thing plus more stuff on Laconia and made a deal with the rogue MCRN faction.. or that ship was MCRN undercover after all or infiltrated by MCRN agents who told their faction once they found that...
Inaros plot however was in motion way before even the series started... the weapons smuggler Avasarala tortures in the first episode was working for Inaros.. not Mao.. Marco was allready ploting an attack with stealth coated rocks into Earth and probably Mars to make the Belt gain independence from the inners.. the whole protomolecule and ring worlds thing created the perfect chance so he gained support and resources faster and easier making him put his plan in motion much faster and with less oposition... even if at a lesser scale since he didnt needed to attack Mars beyond the parlament bombing as Mars was no longer a treat to his plans

The character of Alex was the glue to the Rocinante family, as far as I was concerned. It’s unfortunate that the actor portraying him let us down, but the character of Alex was the grounding force behind keeping “the family” together.
It was complicated by the fact that he abandoned his real family in search of his true purpose, but during the first two or three seasons it was Alex that cemented the simple needs of his makeshift family, and the importance of keeping them together. He cooked lasagna, he bonded with Amos and he stood by his captain and Naomi when things were dicey. I will always have a special place for Alex’s grit, and his tortured nature.
I was so crushed by the actions of the actor, but will not let those actions ruin the good impression that his character left with me.

Very well said, and I feel the exact same way. The actor may be a complete scumbag in real life, but the character of Alex was so lovable and so important to the Roci and its crew, and he cared about all of them so much that he made them into his new family and the Roci into his new home. His death didn't even hit me at all until they had the scene with Holden and Naomi in the med bay when Holden said that Alex's ex-wife would handle the funeral arrangements. Once Holden said that, it finally hit home, and I actually borderline wept at the death of a fictional character for the first time in many, many years. The actor may be a piece of garbage, but Alex Kamal is forever. Rest in power, compadre.

The moment when Oksana asked Drummer to give up on that by not letting them save Naomi, to save their family, that is when she lost Drummer. It's never easy and costs too much all the time, but is what separates her from becoming like Erinwright, Mao and Marco. If Oksana can't understand that, she does not deserve Camina.
"Purity", "One mind, one cause", "Zero tolerance to weakness", you know, I haven't read all the books, but this kind of speech gives a good idea of what kind of society is going to be build on Laconia, and if that is not scary enough on its own, the fact they have access to protomolecule tech, really scares more.

I think Kat's right about the message being a goodbye to Alex. The whole Naomi's unopened message was briefly interspersed in there through the season, and I think it was easy enough for them to have done in post, so that when they made the call to kill off Alex, it'd be easy to build a minor plot point and not make it seem so sudden. I think they could have focused a bit more on the screen monitor in the Screaming Firehawk showing he was having fatal brain trauma, or maybe a bit more in the lead-up to that hard decel, but I think it was handled as well as it could be in the midst of a pandemic and restricted shooting. It's a nice send-off for the character, doing what he loved to save someone he loved, and luck just caught up with him.

small correction: marco did`nt go through the laconia gate with the roge martians, they concered the ring space.
These former martians are a new faction, and shut themselfes off (installed a mine field behind the laconia gate).

I understand that Alex's death felt a little 'sudden',.. but that's a stroke for you. Nobody really see's it coming.
And I think it's actually the best way they could have done it. We've been hearing for 5 seasons how 'dangerous' being juiced and maintaining Hard Burns are, "we could stroke out",.. "eventually one of those blood vessels in your heads gonna pop", etc, etc. It needed to be real eventually, and the old grizzled pilot pushing it hard to save his family is the perfect moment for it.

The red stuff that took out the Barkeith as it was going through the Ring gate to the Laconia system at the end of the episode were the alien race that wiped out the Builders who made the Protomolecule and the Ring network. We woke them up by going through the gates, so they aren’t happy with us.
Alex let it slip earlier in the season when he told Babbage that the small blob of Protomolecule on the Rocinante turned on all of the Builder tech on Ilus. So, Adml Duarte and Cortisar (?) are using their sample that they obtained from Marco to do the same in the Laconia system.
The Rogue Mars faction lead by Duarte mined the Laconian side of the Ring so that no one else can come through. Marco told Adml Salvatore to tell Duarte that they understand and that the Laconian system was theirs while Salvatore accepted that Marco has control of the Sol system.
The bracelet was just to show how hardline the Laconia Empire is going to be.
Marco knows that most Belters can’t live on big planets (at least not without meds from the Inners) and that even splitting up to new systems will result in the end of Belter culture. What he wants is an self-sufficient Belter nation that controls the Sol system and the Ring network access as well as to suppress the Inners for how they treated the people of the Belt. The problem that he doesn’t see, is that he made every Belter an enemy of the Inners, who have larger and highly trained and disciplined navies. Not every Belter will appreciate Marco for that. And even if he didn’t do what he did to Earth, making the Belt self-sustainable would probably take decades. He has five years to fix that problem before the Belt begins to starve. And it would probably take a decade for Earth’s ecosystem to recover enough to help them, that is, if they weren’t at war with the Inners.
That first battle scene deserves to be seen in slow motion. The attention to detail is a thing of beauty.
Lastly, we saw Marco setup that meteor strike on the Earth and Mars battleships guarding the Ring earlier in the season on a holodisplay. I noticed that after I rewatched the season.

I’m glad you two didn’t get into discussing Cas’ real life issues, but I’m also glad you acknowledged their existence. If only because losing his character is not just a tremendous departure from the books (which would cause definite story ramifications should the series ever continue), but considering the rather nonchalant way the storyline death occurred - especially for a main character, anyone not already aware of those issues (or the presence of mind to Google his name), would likely be more than a bit confused, if not a bit taken aback at the way it was all handled. Ooookay, with that said, now onto Season 6!

The situation with the actor who played Alex meant that they had to rewrite certain character arcs. It should have been Fred Johnson who died from a stroke after a high-G burn but they chose to write Alex out of the story rather than replace the actor so they retasked that death to give the character an exit and instead had Fred die in an attack he survived in the book. My guess is Bull is going to slot into some of the future plot where Alex should have been and maybe Peaches taking on other bits.

After watching this season, it's time to jump into the audio books and really immerse myself.
That rescue scene was reminiscent of the scene from GoT's Battle of the Bastards episode; Jon Snow just being smothered and felt like he was drowning trying to gasp for air. It was very well done and a bit emotional. The sound too was very well done with Bobbie in one ear and then attaching the oxygen. Who else held their breath unintentionally when Naomi was floating out there with her air finally used up?
Meanwhile, Drummer had to go through so much this season and it finally paid off. When she finally made contact with Holden, wish there would have been more dialogue.

If you ever need to get your Expanse fit during the wait for season 6, read up on the Goths ("the reapers") and the Romans (protomolecule builders). You can just read up on a wiki and limit yourself to the show info so you don't get the spoilers from books. But there is a lot of info strewn across the 5 seasons about the relationship and what is happening. People just don't put it together usually cause it's all little details mentioned here and there. Like Holden literally showed the Goths to Fred this season and said that he thinks they don't like people going through the ring gates, and you could've seen them when Barkeith went Dutchman (it's what they call it in the books).

Why would any of us expect anything different, at this point?
I haven't read Book 6, yet, so I'm as much in the dark as anybody else.
Now, I have to figure out whether or not to read it before the END OF THE YEAR.
    That's *so far away*.
As for Alex, well, they had to do something because of Cas Anwar's foolishness. How sad.
I think they handled it as best they could, and I think Kat got it right.
Naomi's message becomes a eulogy for Alex.
I didn't expect Naomi to jump out of the airlock.
I thought Bobbie would go in and get her, though, or send in her armor, remotely piloted, to get Naomi.
They definitely took a few ideas from Gravity, with Sandra Bullock.
Also, "Laconia" is the name of the administrative district in southeastern Greece.
In the past, it was the land owned and controlled by the city-state of Sparta.
So, they named the system after the Spartans of classical antiquity.

one of the hardest things for this show to grab people straight away is the space battles and how they play out. Once you understand the chain of events in this battle in particular, especially with the roci absolutely destroying the battleship with its railgun....... I mean for the first few times rewatching it over, I was thinking "is that a drone orrrr....what is that?"......That's the Roci from front on, using the railgun. Looks like a little round drone, but yeah, just an angle of the roci we haven't really seen before.
This show certainly doesn't hold your hand and you have to use the old noodle. Hence why it isn't all things to all men. But us fans..... we know what's up. Nothing even comes close. Nothing. It took me a while to understand thrust gravity and that the floors on ships are perpendicular to the thrusters. Once the penny dropped though, my mind was absolutely blown.
