My grandfather lugged around a BAR across Europe from Normandy on, and he told me that he got very used to just tripping the trigger slightly so that you would get a couple rounds at a time. He told me about one time when the Browning machine gun went down and he was having to use his BAR as a machine gun with two guys behind him loading mags while he was firing on the Germans. When he was done he had pretty much ruined that particular BAR, the forearm was scorched and the barrel was shot out, but the damn thing worked. In any configuration, the BAR was a hell of a gun.
My great uncle Morris had a very similar experience with his BAR but in the Philippines, you could tell by how he spoke about the BAR that he really loved everything about them, except the weight.

All I did before shooting it was oil and grease the respective components and tracks. I suspect a lot of the M1's poor reliability record comes from worn out guns, poorly made replicas, and damaged magazines.

While it is always a hoot to watch Ian handle a... problematic... gun on the range it is an equal joy to see him shooting something that he loves. That BAR seemed like a really fun weapon to shoot.

De Fabribeckers wrote in his book "the campaign of the Belgian army in 1940" that the Belgian soldiers were somewhat surprised and maybe intimidated by the fast rate of fire of German machineguns compared to their own.
It’s okay; my family lore is that my great-great grandfather was an inventor who perfected the bobbin - a Singer salesman stole the design, because ancestor mine didn’t know how patents work in the US.
When it comes to Forgotten Weapons, there is no such thing as a flimsy excuse. I want all the videos you can make and don't care about the why's or wherefore's.

I'm a big fan of these range videos. I know it's not possible to shoot every gun you show on the channel due to them being fragile/ don't have readily available ammunition, but seeing these rare weapons firing makes me smile!
I enjoy watching these shooting videos. One thing I would also enjoy would be seeing the targets hit down range corresponding with the shooting. I know there isn't much to see especially for paper targets etc and it mostly looks the same for many firearms but it is something I would still like to see.

Sweden also made license bulit BARs in 6,5 Swede of course. The m/37 had a quick change barel. In the 40s they also experimented with making it a belt feed.
On the table top review of this gun Ian did, you can totally see where the design of the FAL came from. Invert the action upside down, boom, there is your light BAR.
Interesting stuff. In slo-mo... the gun looks really solid. No barrel 'whip around' no gun flexing, stock shaking. View some other guns in slo-mo rapid fire and you can really see it.
I’ve always been fond of the BAR. Watching the progression to the FN D you can see how FN got to the MAG-58. I’ve had a couple years worth of experience with the M-240H with and without the dismount kit, and I have to admit that if I had the money to go Class 3 I’d have to go with a MAG variant. That FN-D is still sweet, though!

The official term was safe, slow method and standard. The reason he didn't get it into standard or (high) rate of fire is because when the selector is turned to the standard (high) rate of fire it has to be pushed farther than where it easily stops to push down the rate reducer buffer out of the way..Just think these were for sale at Armex back in the early 80's for under 1000 dollars..
I love slow rate of fire weapons, I love how "easily" they can be controlled and the "thung-thung" sound. But I also love high rate of fire, like the MG-42. If I had to choose I wouldn't know which one...

Thank you Ian.. my mother's oldest brother was a BAR gunner during WW2. Brought back a lot of great memories of time spent with him.

When I saw how many mags you had sitting beside you I got very excited.
WOW. Always had respect for the BAR... Never held one but it looks like a rock solid piece of gear.
I'm glad we got to see the FN-D on the High setting there at the end. Even on High, the gun seemed very controllable.
