That's because zombies have a higher chance of spawning on lanes that are more tiles away from the mower due to the portals (this is to prevent a ton of zombies spawning on a lane that has a portal on column 9 linked to a portal on column 1, so that's a really really low chance of spawning). Rows 1 and 2 are 9 tiles away from the mower, rows 3 and 4 are 2 tiles away from the mower, and row 5 is 23 tiles away from the mower. So the game really likes spawning zombies on row 5 and will basically never spawn them on rows 3 and 4 (while the portals are where they are)

I haven't done any runs of the game, but yeah, I think it requires a lot of RNG. I think the biggest part is reacting quickly and efficiently and being able to judge what to do next.

He plants sunflowers one lane at a time, often letting one or two early zombies through so he can focus on sun economy first. He also knows how many sunflowers are ideal on each level. He plants his shooters further right so each shot has less distance to travel. And he really likes using explosives effectively.
@@endeyfire sum of best is self-explanatory but people don't realize that only the best rng involved in those segments is what makes it become the best split. very common example is how soon the first planted sunflower gives you the sun. it can be before the sunflower recharges or it can be way after that you get the 2nd sun from the sky sooner. another example is levels aren't dead set. they can give you 7 bucket zombies and they can give you 3 or 4. flags on survival also give random types of zombies. minigames with random plants also give a different set each time. so basically it's very rng dependent and that's why the WR and sum of best will never be close to each other

I think he's using an autosplitter that splits between levels, but the rules say that timing ends when collecting the golden sunflower trophy, which has a 6 second level transition afterwards.
BACK COLUMN FULL OF SUNFLOWERS. For day, I recommend starting off by getting the back column of sunflowers. For roof (5-1 to 5-4 and 5-6 to 5-9), I would say for 5-1 and 5-2 get lots of cabbagepults and put sunflowers on the 1st and 2nd column in row 3
