I’m not fond of the caricature of Susan, she is grumpy , and doesn’t seem to me to be Mike’s type at all , very plain looking ,and lacking personality . Alma on the other hand was Perfect for him , then he cheated on her . I’m getting very addicted to this show . A fan from USA 🇺🇸.
It annoys me that they made Rita have such little self respect. There’s no way a woman like Rita would be so willing to carry on with Alan after she found out about Gloria.

Elsie Tanner was the glamour in Coronation Street , as she matured she was also very dignified ,and classy . Rita is attractive , but she gets great pleasure in teasing Mavis .
Her accent goes all posh when she's in flirty mode as well. I find her a pain, nowhere near as glam as she likes to think, she couldn't hold a candle to Elsie.
Bet realising she has some responsibilities made her increasingly unpleasant, them being under threat has made her vile. Her entire way of speaking and behaving has changed. It's hard to see how a landlady like that would have any customers anyway. She wasn't an ungenerous character whatever the circumstances and whilst she could always be cutting, deeply sometimes, she wasn't this hideous clipped voice horror she started to embody.
It just dawned on me about the “cabin”. How did they ever make any sort of money,everything is less then 50p and that’s all any one buys. And add on Jenny I hope she finally gets a booking in a rough club and gets done in on e night.

Gail & Sally have given Women's Lib a bad name. There's nothing wrong about being a wife & homemaker or a working person. These characters expect too much. As we know it usually is very hard work & both were pushing other people.
trust me. coronation street did as much for feminism as margaret thatcher did. other than promiscuity and single motherhood, it promoted or vocalised nothing about equality.
They weren’t brought up properly at home. Gail had to figure thinks out since her mother was too busy chasing men and Sally ‘s mom was being abused by her drunken dad. They probably felt they could look down on other people although Gail knew she didn’t want to follow her Audrey’s footsteps.
What do Gloria and Dulcie have in common ( apart from both seeing ‘attached’ men-unknowingly in Gloria’s case). They both later went on to Brookside ( Jackie Corkhill and Jessie Shadwick).
But Gail- if there’s a chance it could be Brian’s- let’s be basic, if you and he had sex-then why does anyone have to know it could be Ian’s? It’d be different if Ian and Brian were different ethnicities- but they’re both white-so the baby certainly will be!
The writers keeping things topical with references to the music of the day, Rita on a-ha. Jenny had Kim Wilde’s Kids in America on repeat practising for her December talent contest too. Then Tracy was into Bros, remember Deirdre leafing through a magazine in the Kabin to make sure it was the one with a poster of them inside lol. Even in the ‘90s, Des’s girlfriend’s Claire’s daughter Becky was after a magazine with Oasis featured inside. I don’t know if Rita couldn’t remember or was winding her up deliberately, asking Osmosis, is it!
I'm rnot enjoyng the Rita/Alan/Gloria triangle. After sifting through Alan Howard's affair in '71 and Gail's affair a few weeks ago, and then jumping ahead to see Ken Barlow having one in '89, I find it hard to watch Corrie recycle this idea. Some commenters have said that Corrie used such story lines to compete with Eastenders. I haven't watched that show, but, if that's the case, it's a shame to see Corrie sacrifice its humanity and humor for plots like this.
It is clear that Corrie had to move in a different direction to compete with the massively popular Eastenders, which was still only just over a year old at this point. Personally, I don't have any trouble with relationship story-lines involving affairs. Admittedly, they have had quite a few in 1986, but I think they were just trying to find creative ways to keep the show true to real life as much as possible. All soaps are littered with these plots quite frequently, which is probably because the writers know that they are both realistic and can keep the audience engaged for the most part. If only good things were happening in soaps then they probably wouldn't be on screen for very long.

I go back to the Joe Donelli story in 1970, in which Stan Ogden--normally portrayed as lazy and opportunistic--demonstrated his heroic side by rescuing Minnie Caldwell. A few years earlier, the story of Ena Sharples facing the death of her daughter moved me. Even Mike Baldwin rose to the occasion by standing up to Billy Walker on behalf of Fred Gee. These kinds of stories test characters and give them a chance to show admirable qualities even if the characters don't always succeed. I find it hard to admire characters who have affairs.

Gail and Brian's relationship was always especially fragile, although I thought her affair in this instance was ridiculous given the short time the guy had been in her life. The Rita, Alan, Gloria triangle was a little far-fetched but I can see what they were trying to do. The fact that Rita was willing to give Alan another chance after knowing that he was seeing herself and Gloria simultaneously is tough to imagine. However, this is a character who was married to Len Fairclough, which in itself shows that her judgment of men left a lot to be desired. In any case, I am really enjoying reliving these 1980's episodes. I was only a kid when they were on at the time and can barely remember any of it except for the long running feud between Ken and Mike.

I've seen the early 1972 episode in which she was reintroduced, but there's a huge gap in the episodes from '72-75 here on RUclips.. Still, I think my favorite periods were the '60s and '70s. There were the occasional affairs (Ken was such a sleezebag), but they seemed few and far between.

It is the 1980s not everone had a phone (Hilda doesn't either) I remember in the 70s and maybe later people used to day "Are you on the phone?" rather than "What's your phone number?
My MIL had a four story Victorian house and we had the same phone in the hall . She used to let rooms. There was only one bathroom in the house and no heating .
