Are the numbers right in your discussion. Still relatively unknown in late 1800's and you are saying he sold his painting for $300.00 (that's the equivalent of $9,000.00 in 2021dollars)

Monet is a terrific artist, but he's not even the best of the Impressionist. Renoir, Degas, Monet imo for what it's worth.
