You may not have the cheapest animals, but (in my personal opinion) you have the most gorgeous of my two favorite genes. Have you ever considered an anxanthic/pied project? Cause that is one gorgeous creation that I would love to price out.
MerpasaurusFox I have. But it is on the back burner as I have two other double recessive projects with axanthic first. Snow and true ghost
Olympus Reptiles I'm super psyched to watch your progress! I just recently got my first b. Python (A bright little het. Albino boy) and have thoroughly enjoyed spending 90% of my free time watching your videos
I got a question? Does ball pythons need UVB light in general??
@MerpasaurusFox
i have been looking for axanthic - vpi line for a while now, they are so Awesome!! and a mix with pied, oh i would pay every last bit of money i have for one =)
@ AZN MGTOW ALLIANCE
They do not need UVB in general. Some people say they get brighter/better colors if u do use them. I have had some UVB in the lamps i had and did not see that much of a difference.
AZN MGTOW ALLIANCE uvb is not needed, nocturnal animal
It’s true. It causes everyone in the business a hardship when someone prices too low. Nobody wins
Thanks for giving me some self confidence! I enjoy all your videos and I hope you can help me when I eventually pick up breeding
You guys are awesome! Being someone who is passionate about reptiles and bugs its refreshing to hear someone with the same thought process as myself.
So you’re saying, have the balls to charge what your snakes are worth.
Jared Edney right. I know what my balls are worth ;)
the passion he shows in this rant, hes earned my subscription
I'm passionate about what I do that's why I don't sell them unless I know that home is right for my animals, I don't care how long it takes,
couldn't agree with you more...its a lot of hard work to give the proper care for these animals...
Preach it Matt.
The only thing I'm interested in when buying a snake is quality, never price. In fact I have paid much more than market value for many of the snakes that I have purchased. Those animals that I paid more than market value for are now producing babies that I'm selling for above market value. My job as a breeder is to improve the quality of the animals that I produce each year. If I'
m able to produce high quality animals then the hope is that my customers are willing to pay the price for that quality.
Great video!
Brian / FGS
Brian Gundy means allot coming from someone as experienced as you are in this hobby!
Love all your videos - just getting my parent animals set up ready to attempt breeding in a year or two ( Cos Mojave, Fire Banana, Firefly, Pastel Leopard, Bumblebee, Pastel Lesser, Cinnamon and - hopefully - a GHI ) so really appreciate all your tips and advice. Keep up the good work people!
Awesome video, awesome and accurate information and advice i loved it keep up the good work
Do you have an instagram? I would love to purchase a ball from you
Not to mention that it is expensive to keep a snake too. Frozen/live rats can be pricy as well as habitat upkeep and maintenance
I was wanting to start breeding them when i got enough money saved up to back it all up and didn't know if marking them low was bad or not i dont mind keeping them i just wanted to make people happy but im glad to know that people dont mind for higher quality if i make those thanks really appreciate it
Thanks for this video Matt. I'm not a breeder but I recently purchased my first baby ball python. He is a pretty little pastel pos het pied. Not super fancy. I chose to go to a breeder when I decided to buy because I wanted a quality animal, even though he was purchased as a pet. He sent me photos of the clutch when it was cut. Sent me updates when the animal fed. When it came time to pick up my little snake he was willing to give him to me. I pretty much insisted that I pay for this snake because I knew the time and care that went into making this animal, and that time had value. Knowing that my baby was healthy, handled, and eating well had value to me. The time he took to keep me updated had value. Even though Fluffy is likely just a one gene little animal I now have a beautiful pet that I adore, that is great to handle, and eats like a freak. As a consumer is makes he sad to see these animals being sold for rock bottom. I'm totally with you on this one. Have some pride! You are not just selling the snake.
This is SO true! I am an aspiring reptile breeder and honestly, people who don't take pride in their animals and themselves and what they're doing, dont deserve to sell or keep the animals at all. There are SO many ways to advertise and get out there and keep the same price! If all you're doing is breeding for quick money, people are going to catch up with you and call you out. Now if people come up and ask for a lower price, it may be that they dont understand the effort put into the animal and need to be educated. It also can be that they cant afford the animal and boy oh boy: if you can't pay for the initial animal, DO NOT get it because you will not be able to buy everything else and care for it the way it should. But all in all great point and wonderful video.
I do not work with ball pythons, but you are a legend to me now! I completely agree with your speech 100%. The reptile community needs more breeders as honest as you
Agree with pricing. Lowering a price on a wonderful animal that you worked hard to produce just because you feel you will never be able to sell is not a good practice. You hurt yourself as well others with how much time, money, care and love is put into these amazing animals.
And this is the reason the market had crashed, people price matching and being scared they can’t shift their animals, really good video and you give really good examples and justification of why your animals are priced the way you price them!
I hope people take real notice of this video because I’m the end the hobby will suffer.
Great advice brotha. I am not breeding yet but I am working on my collection which is up to nine right now but I do have intentions of breeding in the future. Love your channel
Awesome video brotha! I agree that you have to take pride in your animals! Great rant with spot on advice
I’m not huge on the whole morph hobby, but I completely get it. If your animal looks nice, it’s a pet you can love, and you may just be selling a pet, and that’s FINE.
Another issue with huge price drops, multiple people with pets they can't afford after the initial price. Then they end up at my rescue.
Currently at 14 random reptiles. The Island Of Misfit Reptiles
drives me nuts to hear "Morph Market has them cheaper" or "saw it go on an auction cheaper"
Roccar Morphs yup. Morph market has shipping to. And auctions are one off. Many don't hit reserve
Completely agree, I hope to start breeding snakes one day, but Ive always thought quality was a huge indicator of the breeder as well. Those who produce great animals probably spent good money to get the nicest one they could and spent a lot of time and energy to raise them. I only have two rescue ball pythons right now but i hope to start buying and working with lots of different genes.
Awesome video, you always have some great info. Got a question for you tho. I know you deal with the SK line, But I was wondering if you could possibly point me in a good direction for a VPI line?
Tyler Ennis oh man, I really don't know as I just skip anything vpi since I started/invested in sk
Olympus Reptiles I gotcha lol, I figured it was worth a shot tho. Thanks for the reply and keep up with the awesome videos!
On the other side of that, some people seem to not want to sell their snakes because they're priced so high. If you ever want a laugh, check random kijiji postings. There's a lady here where I am who posted a normal (not het) for $350. Of course I had to contact her and ask why, she claimed she wanted to make back some of the cost of the food over the years. (she's since changed the add claiming it's an alloy)
Hey Matt big season for you!! Can you show us in videos what size rats you feed new hatchlings and when do you move them up in size?
Tito the trainer we did a baby feeding video. Moving up is just eyeballing when they are ready
I love your channel!!!! I have a question not related to ball pythons, where can I buy a dwarf caiman?
Ty'Necia Harris just have to search high and low and get lucky. What I did lol.
Hey matt where could i purchase one of your animals or see what you have for sale?
This is true, i went to my first reptile show and one breeder had a very nice display, he talked and seemed like he cared about his snakes and i was sold just off of the information and energy he was giving off. If youre a good salesman, you can sell anything.
Have a question I see a lot of your videos thanks for all of the info keep up the great work. But I was told that if the tub is always wet the can get a respiratory infection and see yours are always wet? Is that true?
Norberto Mojica if they are in direct water yes. Humidity on the sides no. I literally have had zero respiratory infections.
K state! Dad mastered EE. Uncle was head PhD of chem e dept there for 50ish yrs. Died on his office desk a few years back.
Clarence Lee awesome that family is connected to KSU. sorry about the losses though
Hey do you have any female pied for sale???
Darius B we do not. But should in 18
Olympus Reptiles ok thanks
This brings up a good point. Other animal breeders have associations the breeders belong to so as to help standardize breeding and stabilize the industry. Is it time for BP breeders to do the same?
Stephanie Antoniuk I would lol
I know I over-paid for my snake...but I bought it from a popular breeder who doesn't breed a whole lot and who takes the effort and care to raise healthy BEAUTIFUL snakes with great genes. I love my BP and he was worth every single cent.
Then.....you didn't overpay
@@OlympusReptiles True
Do you have a website to purchase off of
How do we buy from you. I’m looking for an banana enchi. (I think). Omg I have so much excitement. I must start slow like you said.
excellent rant, really good point
Good message in this video bro!
I have a question. Does the quality or thickness of a plastic container matter? I have everything (temp controller etc). I'm still very paranoid that the heat tape would possibly melt the plastic. I ready to raise the tub with rubber nubs but when I see breeder's racks. Their system is very tight, I don't see any gap indicating y'all are using anything to raise the tub.
So where do you get them? Thanks
Victor Huerta lol, Walmart. I have used many a sterilite tub
Olympus Reptiles Ok ok. So do you raise the containers with rubber(or any type of) bumpers or no? The container lays directly on the heat tape?
Olympus Reptiles Thanks again!
Victor Huerta directly on. Thermostat control is a must though
Olympus Reptiles Yes, I have a temp controller. Ok then, I definitely trust you & thank you so much for the responses bro! Take care & God Bless 👍
Do you have a website? How would i go about purchasing a animal from you?
Patreon!
I spent $173 on my lesser plat. $45 of that was shipping. Knowing what I know now I’m sure I could have found one cheaper but I love my girl so much and I don’t regret paying that money for her. She is and was healthy when I got her, she is great at eating, and she’s just the best first snake I could have got.
And really, that price isn't too crazy at all
What is a good price for a 0.1 super pastel butter fly?
Never thought about breeding, but undercutting does more than devalue the market, it damages relationships in the community. If I ever did it, I’d want to be a contributing part of the breeder community, breed great snakes, and help keep everyone in business. The fact that you’re addressing the underlying fear, and trying to build people up, says a lot. You get the sale on my next snake!
I need to buy some snakes. Could you give me your info so i can buy
panda4life Olympus reptiles on Facebook
What would you recommend for a rack? Did you buy yours? Or make it.
Jack Feys purchased from tallgrass reptiles
The crappy looking one is homemade. The nice ones are purchased through tallgrass reptiles.
The way I see it if I want it I’ll buy it , price is just the last step in a decision I agree Matt it makes it really really hard for a top breeder as yourself because when that happens then people think your over priced or your trying to rip them that’s stupid. Your doing awesome brother!
Dr Thunder ty! I am certainly not a top breeder though, just a little guy.
What do you think is fair for normals and normals with non-visual gets? I do a lot of compare and co yeast to learn what the average market value seems to be...but those are visual morphs. Normals with hets, I can’t find a fair level of agreement. Does it depend on the het, the number of hets?
Ravyn Karasu yes, definitely depends on the het and number. But a normal value, I usually ask $20
Awesome video Matt..agree 100% with you..
Amen dude! I produced a zebra bee female with my first clutch this year and I'll be damned if I'm letting her go for anything less than $700. I'm right there with you, I invested with John and have produced beautiful animals from his stock.
Just curious do you ship your snakes to your buyer's or do the buyer's come and pick them up?
Yogis Bobo both!!
Olympus Reptiles Sweet thx again
Honestly I agree with you. And personally I have no problem paying for a quality animal versus a cheap animal ...
Where are you located
I agree with you 100% Matt if we all keep the prices around the same quality will sell itself. Better for everyone! Unless your wholesaling to get rid of some inventory to make room.
Hello Matt! Thank you for directing your passion into these videos. What is a fair price to pay for a true Red Tail boa at a reptile show?
Nick Joslin honestly depends on bcc or bci. And quality. I don't work with boas so can't provide a good price
Nick Joslin is the boa you want a Suriname red tail boa or a Colombian red tail boa?
Your completely right
Yayyy 100th like. Great vid. Loved the joke. That ghi is a stunner.
You are honest. Politicians will tell people anything, like a car dealer.
I was wondering how much I can sale my Mojave for my breeder around me has them from 200 to 350 but I'm on this fb ball python page and I got like 3 girls telling me it's only worth 50 and I pay 65 for normals at my local pet shops idk what to do please let me know
I usually sell a female at about $100 for a hatchling
Mann that's crazy where I'm from in California they are so much more
GREAT video, spoke the truth
Thanks for this video i.m so happy you put this information on here i love your information that you put time on this videos thanks thanks and hope to buy a snake from you in future
dude you're awesome!
Ty! Share a vid if you can, help us keep this growing!
The video title is the funniest shit ever
I completely agree about pricing and the quality of the animals you are selling i personally breed downey rats and feed them best quality food bedding and im proud of my colony i refuse to go by what others are selling them for.. i have never been accused of selling unhealthy rats and i know you breed your own and know how much it cost and what it takes to keep them in clean conditions of life...
My animals arent the cheapest either but I took years and meticulously built my collection acquiring only quality animals so anything I produce is always stunning. Theres always that guy selling for super cheap and if they are quality animals the best lesson Ive learned is to buy everything they have and sell them for twice as much. After they watch you do it once or maybe twice problem solved. Seems unorthodox but what has worked for me.
Question does quality mean that you should go with the newer morphs, or does the morph even matter?
that was awesome great message
I feel like a lot of breeders don’t understand the business side of this.
Matt your 100% right.Id love to know where your located.Id also buy from you.I have 5 ball pythons & their raised with love & they know it brother.
Keith Petrie Manhattan KS
I stand by price on anything I sell whether it's snake lizard rats someone will always buy it and know the work that went into them ...
Valid points!
I agree with you, we look for the quality in an animal not the price when looking to purchase an animal. We sell quality because the animals are produced from quality animals. The ball python market somewhat crashed because people are scared that they will get stuck with animals so they started selling them at rock bottom prices. Just last weekend I saw someone selling bananas for $50.00 at a show. I asked the guy why he was selling them so cheap, I was told that he wanted to sell everything before he left the show. This guy has no care for the animals or for the reptile community, just wanted to get rid of them. We take a lot of pride in what we do here at Lone Star Reptiles, And the quality shows. Most importantly, don't make it all about money (HAVE FUN)
Do you sell online and ship?
Chelsea Francis we do. CK our Facebook
Not a breeder maybe one day(hopefully on a small scale)but you my friend hit the nail on the head with this one ☝️
Be Proud of Your Work!
Great Rant ;) Here here!
Do you sell your ball pythons I want to breed my normal with a pastel
absoultley agree, somethings you shouldn't look for the best discount, haircuts, tattoos, and snakes
I absolutely loved your rant , it's 100% true I'm new to the snake game this year but very big into the fish scene where I live and everything you said I stand behind when I'm selling my animals , always top quality and very healthy but my price isn't cheap like you said your self you follow that mood that Passion and it makes you feel good at the end of the day knowing you did your part the best you could and people really do recognize that , I love my clients and love to always see them come back for more , going to be slowing down on keeping fish and down size everything to one tank and start my bp breeding project :) you said your self a normal is great to have around! I found my self an absolute stud - normal 50% het albino , the breeder I got him from said he's abit special then all the rest of that clutch has signs of some orange dream
Word. Don't apologize. Word. Getting into breeding ball pythons. For the fun of it form of therapy and if I get some change so be it. It's exciting. Raise breed Koi and orchids am an aquarist. Via morph net almost have 8 picked out. First thing am picking what I find appealing to me as pets. Would it be alright to drop a line with what I'm getting and get a educated opinion on what to potpourri could do? Good vids. Any green or blue snakes? Red orange?
Ochibason yes, but not bright version in ball pythons, at least not for a good price. But green tree pythons, yes available
I am excited! just watered and checked everybody
Because of kurt's passion for the rats, does he get sad when his work is being fed to the snakes?
Nope. They are bred for that purpose. I have asked him that myself
You tell it brother! If you have amazing animals and you believe in those animals you don't have to worry about it. If I wanted to I could sell all my babies for $50 a pop but why would I?
Yes, yes, and yes. Most of what we produce is wholesale but they always pay more than wholesale and never bring them back from a show. I don't mind making a little less but I have pretty much zero overhead for shows or advertising. Also the people I buy from gives me Hella deals on snakes because they know we take pride in what we produce and they will reap the benefit later when they get the babies to sell. I never have to set on a clutch.
The title sounded like something else.... lollll😂😂😂
Your prices seem fair to me. I’d much rather see you, a breeder who works hard and takes good care of his animals, get support than a pet store or something
I definitely agree with what your saying. Without proper seller knowledge and competitive pricing, deflation will start to come into play.
U said nothing wrong at all Matt!! All of it was so true cuz ur passionate about what u do, that's how it should be.. That's why I enjoy watching an following ur vids. As for that breeder u were talking about, they should not even b breeding if they feel that way. That's my personal opinion. Awesome vid btw keep em coming 💪
As someone who is just getting into breeding I couldn't agree more with you, it just ruins the market for the rest of us... Gotta make a buck somehow to keep the projects flowing!
Hey I agree with you 100% good video.
Well said
The last reptile show I went too, there were WAY too many breeders asking double what I see in other places for in my opinion, not worth it snakes. To others they have have been, but not to me lol but then there were some with beautiful snakes for a more reasonable price, but then there was one booth that had some super low prices. The snakes looked healthy and were nice, but I didn't trust them lol
I bought a female that they claimed was a Yellowbelly Firefly, it looks so close to your "lesser" I wonder if I bought something named wrong. She wasn't a lot, and she's the best snake I've ever had but still.
i want one of your snakes
You were made to be a preacher (:
Nice snakes dude
Hahaha thats my snake. Im excited for him.
Cody Smith damn right it is!! Just ate again (in shed).
Olympus Reptiles I cant wait i always support people who have a passion. Its not just money for you and its beyond a hobby. You can bet if i need another ill be heading your way.
I think one thing you skip over is that some people are not producing to make a lot of money or any really, some are just going towards building breeding stock for longer term projects. Those scenarios, sometimes that person just wants to move what doesn't fit Into that plan, not out of fear of not being able to sell it, but more a desire to just clear out inventory that's unneeded and not spend the time to sell it
Chris Hoover I don't know, still has a value. I think if going to a show as a vendor, etc that is a bit beyond someone only doing two clutches or so to get to a specific goal. Even I am not in this for money right now, and still have taken zero dollars for myself. All goes to equipment etc at this point. The reason I spoke of fear, that was exactly what I was told by the seller. They were afraid they would be stuck with them. They wouldn't, I can promise.
Olympus Reptiles I can understand that point of view brother. I guess I'm more thinking of the person that maybe wants to set up at 1 show and move all unwanted inventory in 1 shot. I'm not saying it's right, just a view I could see.
A couple shows ago I grabbed a breeder male bamboo for a few hundred bucks, 1000 grams. Same scenario, the guy had moved beyond a single gene bamboo in favor of a multi gene. I was happy to buy the little stud. :)
I want one of your shirts brotha
Duncan's Pythons just ordered more. Can be had at shows or through patreon
I 100% AGREE with you! I just price my first clutch of male mojaves for 75 each had a few people telling me if i would i take 35 instead LOL a lot of people don't understand the time that's put into these snakes and money of course...
Chris CMM Constrictors stick to your guns. I sold normals for $30, not taking 35 for a mojo
Especially given the food expenses.. a pack of 10 frozen rats can easily fetch over $50+ as well as habitat upkeep and maintenance, also exotic pet vet expenses can be pricy as well. That doubles if you have a mating pair to take care of
In my area they sale mojaves for 200 to 350
ella motley you also have to take into consideration the linage when pricing as well. No offense to any Mojave’s cause they are all beautiful too me. But don’t get me wrong I’m more inclined to pay 200-250 than spend 75 if the animal has something “unique” or an “interesting” look. Quality over quantity for me. But too each their own.
Nice advice
These are some good looking pythons!
This video knocked it out of the park. I am not a breeder but may at a very small scale someday.....give me something to do in retirement. I've owned many exotic snakes over the years with my first being a red tail boa WC in 1980. Back in those days, people would run as fast as they could from low priced snakes because they knew it was a 50/50 shot that snake would even survive and a 100% chance the person you bought it from would not stand behind them or be already out of business opening their new business on how to screw people. Today when I see rock bottom prices on snakes I walk real fast. I'm old enough now running isn't something I can do...at least fast. 😂 Ok, I'm done with my rant also. Love your video's and love your shop in the Little Apple. I stop in every time I pass through town. Take care and keep up the passion you have for your animals. I know you will and we got your back out here.
