  • Tuning Body Hammers
Today we are doing something a little different. A while back Wray bought a bunch of blacksmithing tools and body hammers. They we all severely rusted. So we put them in rust 911 solution for 24 hours, cleaned them off and them wire brushed them. Now Wray is going to tune the body hammers, put them on a wooden handle and then paint them red.
He grinds the hammer head starting with 50 grit and going all the way to 1200 to give it a nice polished look. Puts the head on the handle and using Rustoleum red paint, paints the head and voila, it's ready for the window at Tiffany's.

Hi Wray, I'm new to your site. You are a true craftsman. I have an architectural Blacksmith shop in Arizona. We use a lot of different types of hand hammers, from sledges, to smaller Repousse type. The heat dries out and kills everything here. We have a open top 55 gallon barrel that we put about 3 inches of used automotive anti freeze in the bottom, and stand the hammers up (head down) in the bottom of the barrel to soak when the heads get dried out, or to store them in. The anti freeze swells the wood handles, and takes a long time to evaporate after you take a hammer out to use it. It also keeps the heads from rusting. Thanks for sharing your skill. Max

Boiled Linseed Oil on the handles improves the timber flex and stops splintering also helps keep hammer heads tight as the timber swells a little in the head.
Can also keep the raw forged finish using the linseed oil on the steel.
    Stops heads rusting

I like the wrapping of the handle but the ends finish in electrical, I think. After years of repairing electrical I dab black weatherstrip adhesive on the tag end of your tap. Never will come loose! Best of luck Wray as I did this over the winter, except the 1,200 grit. But still used the foam interface pad!
    Have a great 2022!

Good Evening Wray I have not forgotten you. I have been out of work for the past month. I had a pulmonary embolism and I am not allowed back in the shop until some time in March. I can’t take the isocyanates from the paints and primers.

I have a little jewelers chasing hammer that comes in very handy from time to time… but I live the handle shape of it with a large swell on the end… I’d love to make some full size body hammers with that handle shape

Someone once asked why I had all those broken hammers in my tool box and suggested I buy new ones. Handles were much cheaper, especially the solid brass ball peen head.

I went to the hardware store for a hammer handle $15.00
I found a hickory shovel handle for the same price I made four or five hammer handles
I use a disk grinder and shape them you can give them a custom shape
After using my hammers for a while you get a feel for
The shape it needs to make it work a little better
Squared off just a little to aim better …fatter in the right spot to pivot with balance for the right amount of strike power
    Never grip a hammer tight
Lose in your hand but comfortable
I panel bond my handles and wedge them they stay tight for years

I like to wrap the handle neck (right under the steel) with some hemp twine, hide the string ends and coat with super glue. The grip I carve like a old style gun stock knurl pattern. Then use a die grinder with a small burr and ingrave/grind in my name and a peace sign ☮️ on the steel boss the handle is stuck through.
I call it "fuckin off" at work.

Sometimes local hardware stores have handles, maybe ones that are more out in the country. How else are you gonna keep great granddad's hammer going?

You were talking about Mark and the RUclips keywords and algorithms in the last video. I'm far from an expert but I'm thinking you should add something about replacing the handle to your video title. Truing body hammers is a very specific audience. There must be 1000x more people who are looking for info on handle replacement and your vid is also applicable to them.

Was is the brand / source for your foam grinding pad backer?
You mention Rust 911 in a few of your videos. I'm curious if you have tried Evapo-rust? If so, what do you like better about Rust 911?
As always, thanks for sharing your time and knowledge.

    • @proshaper

Good ones. Proto, Plumb, Martin, Snap-on, Fairmont. These are all American companies, the are lots of European quality hammer makers too. Pickard is one of them.

I’ve done mine a while back even buffed them including the dolly’s but dropped the 3.5 pound dolly after it spat on polisher and broke my big toe I now remember to wear steel toe caps when doing them instead of trainers.
And the mrs hands me a body hammer to hit a nail with I wasn’t impressed my reply to her it’s a hammer I said no it’s not that type of hammer I get my own hammers now. Great video Wray
