Building & Cooking in a Tandoor Oven (Improved) | Making Naan and Tandoori Chicken

  • Building a Tandoor Oven was surprisingly easy even with the limited tools and limited space that I have. It turned out very well and I was able to make a tasty meal of Tandoori Chicken, Malai Chicken, and some scrumptious Naan Bread. ...And it was all done using materials found around the house or at the hardware store and it was all done well under $100!
    Chapters
    • Introduction • Build a Tandoor Oven F...
    • Building The Tandoor Oven • Build a Tandoor Oven F...
    • Making Tandoori Chicken & Naan • Build a Tandoor Oven F...
    This was inspired/triggered from watching a RUclips video from the @Treasure Hunt Foodies where James and Kim visited an Indian Restaurant that happens to be located in a gas station: • BEST Louisiana Indian ... . That triggered the cravings and I suspect the only way to have fresh Indian food with the corona-virus quarantine is to do it yourself... which includes building your own Tandoor Oven. If you would like the recipes for the Tandoori Chicken or the recipe for the Naan Bread, please drop me a note.
    Just a word of warning…this is an experiment and there are dangers when using materials in applications that were not intended for their original use and using non-food safe materials for the purposes of food preparation. I’m very cautious of contaminants such as lead or other substances in the building materials and accept the risks on my end. If you do decide to try this, please proceed with caution and know the risks involved! I do not take responsibility for the risks involved in building such a project and this I’m sharing my own experience. It might be best to treat this as entertainment and support your local Indian restaurants with your take-out orders :-)
    All in all, in my experience, it was a fun project and helped focus the attention to something different than the news. Luckily our hardware store has online pick-up so getting the materials was quite easily done. Items can be found on Amazon, Home Depot, and Canadian Tire. Here’s what I’ve used:
    • 2 x 15” Terra Cotta Clay Pots or smaller
    • www.canadianti...
    • www.homedepot....
    • 1 x Extra Large Terra Cotta Clay Pot
    • www.homedepot....
    • Planter Caddy:
    • www.homedepot....
    • Clay Plant Feet:
    • www.canadianti...
    • 3-4 bags of Vermiculite (9L)
    • www.canadianti...
    • www.homedepot....
    • Round Wire Rack:
    • www.amazon.com...
    • Lead Testing Kit:
    • www.homedepot....
    • Fire Extinguisher:
    • www.canadianti...
    • www.homedepot....
    Again, if you do decide to tackle this, the risks and responsibilities are yours...be careful! This oven can reach over 1000° fahrenheit and have a fire extinguisher nearby. Using a lead testing kit on the materials such as the terracotta pots would be a very good idea as well!

    Great video .
    You’ll need some kinda ventilation for the bottom of it to allow air flow into the Tundoor .
    And second suggestion would be use for your chicken two skewers instead of one , use them opposite side so you can use the hook at the end of skewers to cook both sides of chicken evenly.
    However great video and thanks

    Is it legal in Canada to do open fire cooking on the balcony in an apartment/condo complex? I don't think it is in the US.

    • @geraldinefields1730
      @geraldinefields1730 4 года назад +1

      It is not legal. A building fire is a tragedy with people losing their lives in a horrific way or if their lives are saved, they live with pain and wounds for a long time.

    • @waynesworld1655

      In Canada it all depends on the condo board? Especially with charcoal bbq’s. Usually propane bbq’s are banned though.

    So, what keeps the upper pot from sliding off the lower pot? The vermiculite can't give enough pressure to keep the pots from shifting when handled, I wouldn't think. Other than that it looks good.

      Hi Wayne, I was born and raised in the Vancouver area. I grew up around the Hastings area (in an Italian neighborhood). I moved to Surrey recently (a few years ago) to be closer to work. Although that doesn't really make much of a difference with the remote work that's happening currently :-) We're doing pretty well here as things are opening up and we don't seem to have many cases...though I must say the majority of the people were quite mindful of the isolation. LoL ... even the local buffet sent an email indicating they were opening up ;-) I suspect it may be too soon to go at this moment. Fairview slopes is a very nice area and certainly developing very nicely. Nice to hear from a local ... will you visit here soon? :-) Take care :-)

      Tim Lee yeah back then I only payed $650 and split a townhouse with the full view of the downtown harbour. That place must be at least double to triple the rent now? I’m back in my small hometown Windsor, ON. Right across the river from Detroit.
      That’s awesome the local buffet is opening but I agree. A bit too early. I think I’ll wait until September before I even decide upon going back to restaurants.

    Where is the vent for air circulation and cleaning the ashes??

    • @TimLeeLetsGo
      @TimLeeLetsGo  2 года назад +1

      The vent holes are at the bottom and the lid.. generally I close and open the hole on the lid to control the heat. I hope you give it a try ... really fun cooking with the oven🙂

    Pit little bit of yeast into the naan the outer layer will crisp up but inside will be propa fluffy and nice.

    is these pots safe for cooking food?

    • @TimLeeLetsGo
      @TimLeeLetsGo  4 месяца назад

      For me, I did use a lead testing kit just to make sure it was safe. However, just be careful because I got fined from my strata management group in my building for having a fire on the balcony

    Why was the galvanised one no good? 🇬🇧

    • @TimLeeLetsGo
      @TimLeeLetsGo  3 года назад

      The galvanized outer container has the risk of releasing zinc fumes which can be toxic.. someone mentioned that in the previous video and I thought I'd err on the side of caution. On my setup, the bottom of the galvanized can started to discolor which is a sign potential risk.
