I am a Gentile Christian and I really wanted to know what this meant so I prayed a lot over it. I have prayed to Adonai about a lot of new testament understanding, fully trusting that He would show me the real meaning of it all. Instead of what I thought would happen, I ended up at a Messianic congregation and I continue to be blessed with better perspective of my Dad by the Jewish people than the protestants are able to provide! I needed this one.
Rendition of the text is "The Pharisees and sages sit upon the seat of Moses. Therefore, all that he (Moses) says to you, diligently do, but according to their reforms (takanot) and their precedents (ma‘asim) do not do, because they talk but do not do.".
Only few manuscripts out of thousands says that and even then the text says all that he WILL say to you, in future tense.
Hes saying rabbinical interpretation is important, but that thse guys aren't living to the same standard, hes not saying interpet law however you want.

the interpretation of moses seat is simple...if someone is teaching you the bible the word of god do as it says if the ones teaching you are themselves not obeying the word of God that's not your example to follow .
Don't hold traditions over Torah, or do not add or subtract from Torah, do not act like them.... I have always saw that verse as Moshes seat is like a seat of Judgement with incorrect Judgement. But like how u said authority. Shalom
The Pharisees added too (takenot) and made up their own rules (ma'asim), that are not found in Torah and that is forbidden. They have made thereby the Law of God null and void. They claim that God is in heaven and they have the authority on earth..... shame on those who claim that, may God forgive them!

What text are you reading? The passage in context and in the language is speaking about the disciples to NOT be called a Rabbi. What are you reading? Yeshua is speaking to his disciples. They are not to be called a Rabbi or to be called a leader for they are all brothers, equals! Unbelievable.

They would stand to read and sit for commentary. You go back to the Greek and you’ll see it’s talking about doing what is read from Moses. Study this out. Not Pharisaical or modern Judaism.
