    excellent !! I remember sitting in the stands on horse guards and watching the beating retreat of all the Irish regiments in 1981 . still have the tickets and programs .

    Just came across this as well! If my father was still alive I'd be be showing him this and he'd be watching in silence bringing back memories of his time in the local town band and at the Depot.

    Remember this parade well. Also , was one of the few that my relatives came to see. Proud day for myself in many ways.

    This was an extremely rare event in NI in those days, simply because of the enormous security requirements involved. Everybody had to go through metal detectors, bomb sniffing dogs had to be deployed throughout the arena and soldiers and police had to be stationed throughout the immediate area looking for snipers and mortars. A terrible shame to have to go through all that to protect a charitable event.

      They closed st Patricks barracks bellymena a good camp with in door shooting range .

      @@johnbarnes5237 Yes my brother was pipe major of RIR I was there as a civilian learning the bagpipes .
