Whoa that driving beat .. I've noticed Prince had this amazing ability to take the "normal" Parts of a rock song, and eventually delete those parts but keep them virtually by adding layers of instrumentation that Keep the space without having to add it back... Probably why Doves Cry has no bass line... but yet... it does... He could also take 5 different guitar parts and make them sound like one... If you want guitars to sound like an orchestra, Prince was your guy... Such a mind blowing talent on all levels.

That's how it is with song artists. the Muse doesn't last forever. Dylan said as much.
it's like the Stones could never have written a song as great as Start Me Up so late in their career.. They had wrote it over a decade earlier, while in their greatest creative mental state.
So it makes sense I Could Never was written so much earlier.
and as good as "Most Beautiful Girl" is, it's not as complex & original as so many earlier hits. Adds up.

The crazy thing is that they don't sound that different from what was eventually released. Sounds change quickly, yet it's like he knew that he was ahead of the curve. This dude: old song sitting around for years=hit. This dude again: Needs one more song, that would turn out one of his biggest hits on his biggest album, did it over night=hit. Honestly, this is an amazingly forgettable version of one of Prince’s greatest songs with backing musicians that sound like the cover band at your sister’s wedding.
The band sounds tight enough but the music doesn’t sound like Prince (or the Revolution) at all. This version pretty much runs notes up and down the scale, which is why it sounds so boring. They aren’t playing any of the bluesy tones or jazz chords that characterize this song - and Prince’s music generally. And with everyone in the band playing the same notes, Prince's guitar work melts into the rhythm section. There’s nothing there to make it stand out.
As for the rest, the differences are subtle between this version and the final recorded version, but those differences make all the difference. The drummer in this version plays a cutesy little syncopation in the last beat of every other bar, which would be fine but the drummer in the album version plays a straight four with a strong rock n roll back beat which drives the song with a sexy energy. More notable, Prince spices up the chorus of the version we know with a suspended 2nd to the I chord, an add 9 to the VII, and a 6 to an inverted IV. These little shots of dissonance add spice to the music, typical of Prince’s usual MO and characteristic of the Raspberry Beret we all know and love.
I don’t know where this recording comes from. The singer sure sounds like Prince (of course, I understand that it's him), it just doesn't sound like the music we'd become accustomed to from P and his bands.
