Hi! I just finished watching your video. It is so much helpful for a foreigner like me who has zero experience about mobile payment in China. You did a great job. fei chang gan xie 🙏🙏
One important thing to note: you may need to unrestrict/allow international transactions on your bank's app for the card before you can add it to Alipay. At least for me I couldn't get my card to be added until I did that.
Hi Silas, thanks for the clear explanation, (at first I was confused the top up balance using China Bank card, watched from other channels). Now I understood that top up yuan only can perform by China users. We foreigners can't top up, payment will deduct from our link bank card. I'm going to Hubei in ten days time. 😊 Thanks again!
Hi, my flight is after two months and I have no idea how to pay yet it's concerning if I chose pay , I haven't land in china yet but just in case , I opened the application and when I chose pay . sorry, overseas payment is available to verified users from china mainland only , what's the case here
What needs to be mentioned is that any money still in your Alipay Wallet is useless when you leave China. When you return back to your own country as a foreigner your money will be stuck in your account until you visit China again. I have this problem in Thailand where i have money in my Alipay Wallet but cannot transfer it to my Thai bank account or spend in 7-11. This is because it is not a Chinese bank account that is linked.
Curious, the bank cards you add, aren't they just a credit card? So your card just gets charged and Alipay is only a digital service platform. I'm new to Alipay so just genuinely curious how this could be a problem?
@roundingcorners The reason it is a problem is if anyone has a balance in their account. In Thailand I have been paid by students into my Alipay account which once it is there needs to be spent in China only. It cannot be spent in your home country or deposited back into your bank.
@@cmteacher8571 I see, makes sense if you are receiving funds but for most foreign visitors, we just want a method of payment. I would assume if a good/service is refunded, it goes directly to the card used in the account?
@@cmteacher8571that’s because it was transferred to your alipay. without chinese bank account, u can’t withdraw or topup your alipay account but this video is about using alipay in china as a tourist, and u don’t have to topup your account for that. all u need to do is link your card and it would only deduct what u used, directly from your bank. if u don’t want money in your alipay account, just don’t topup at all and ask people to not transfer money to use in alipay.
I have a friend who is 65 years old who just returned from China for holiday with his 62 years old wife. They have intended to visit for 2 weeks but after 4 days they give up and returned home. The reason is they said China is very inconvenient for them as cash is not acceptable almost everywhere. And they're too old with very knowledge of how to use the phone for payment. They keep telling people don't go to China. It's not a country for old people with no knowledge of IT or cellphone knowledge. Just too bad when they like to see China so much.
@@SilasYan , I was talking to 2 elderly retired men in the 60s in Thailand. There are actually Thai Chinese and wish to visit China on their own free and easy and not with travel agency. But they are very worried because of payment system in China. They told me they are not good in IT or phone and with very little knowledge of how to use the digital phone. They were saying why can't China make it easy for old people like them by using top up card system. A system that a visitor visiting China can buy a top up card from the airport or any entry point into China and they can use cash to top up the card and use the card like using phone with bar code. Buy, eat, scan and pay just like phone and if the cash run low in the card, they can go to the ATM and top up. Because many elderly people just don't have the knowledge of using Alipay or Wechat no matter how much you explain to them. I know of many people wanted to go to China and see China. But this cashless system have worried many people ended up they are saying travelling in China is very inconvenient as most merchandizes don't accept cash payment and even take taxi is difficult. I know one guy who travel for the first time to China last year and came back telling people no to go to China as China is not easy to travel. He took a taxi from airport to the hotel he has booked. Where he arrived at the hotel and he paid the taxi driver in cash. But the taxi driver doesn't have cash to return him the change which was about 60 yuan. He also said that finding restaurant to eat is difficult because he has to ask the restaurant first if they accept cash payment before he order his foods. He came back telling people don't go to China.
Apparently. You're telling the truth. But we can do nothing more. There were many pos machines that supports credit cards before, but people prefer to use mobile payment. And mobile payment win the game. As you described, I always recommend foreigners to get small cash like, 1/2/5/10 yuan, rather than just 50/100 yuan. Small cash will fix any payment problem. We just don't have small cash, but we all need to accept cash. If any merchant refuse to accept cash. That's illegal, Just call the police. Our government aware that the payment is a big problem for foreigners right now. So they launched some new policy about that. I believe it'll be more convenient for foreigners very soon.

hi Silas - thanks for such detailed walk thru. I have a question - in my Alipay app, I have two options: Recharge Balance and Bank Cards. Which one do you recommend to use?
Hi Silas. I tried using Alipay in the Philippines and it doesn't work, even though I have added cards issued in the Philippines. I noticed the Wallet is zero, 0.00 no money. Is this the reason why it doesn't work? If yes, then does it mean I have to put in money into the Wallet from my bank card? How do you do that? Also, can you add debit card?
@@SilasYan hi silas, can you please elaborate more about how to use alipay for foreigners? you said that we don't need to top up, then how to pay with alipay in china? is it possible if we use international bank card(not china bank card). thanks before

sounds easy, I have a UK phone and UK master and visa cards, German ID, but when I will use Alipay I need wifi otherwise I need to use a lot of mobile data, I will go as a tourist for 3 weeks, do not want a Chinese SIM
You can use free WiFi at restaurants, hotels or any physical stores when you need to pay(just ask them, they ALL provide free WiFi). However, if you want to pay for street vendors. There's no free WiFi for you to use.
But it would work anyway with the offline payment code if I read this: ??? For mobile payment platforms like WeChat and Alipay, which actually equip every user with a dedicated identifier. The name is Seed Data. It is as unique as our real life ID card. If you open the payment code to pay when there is no network, it can generate an offline code, which can help us to complete the payment process, so it can also be called offline payment. How is an offline code generated? When there is no network on the phone, the recognition system of WeChat and Alipay will generate a QR code based on the set algorithm, seed data and time, and other factors. This QR code is used for offline payments and it is the offline code. When the merchant scans the payment code, the scanning device such as a code gun will verify the offline code through the relevant algorithm. If it is verified that the offline code comes from the consumer's mobile phone, then the payment process can be confirmed and completed immediately. The offline code will be identified according to the user's identity, and is one-time, every 60 seconds will be updated, so the offline code also has a great security. Nowadays, many smartwatches rely on a similar principle, enabling users to present the payment code through the watch without a mobile phone.

Hello Silas Yan, I do have a question for you, If my family in china can transfer some RMB to my Alipay, do I still need to scan my credit card or not?thank you in advance.
You just need to verify your identity on Alipay. General speaking, You can use balance that your family transfer to you.
@@SilasYan can you tell me how to verify my identity on Alipay? thank you
I've shown that in this video. You need to upload your passport to verify that. If you are Chinese resident, you need to upload 身份证 🆔

Hi, can I convert my cny in alipay to Philippine peso?
sounds easy, I have a UK phone and UK master and visa cards, German ID, but when I will use Alipay I need wifi otherwise I need to use a lot of mobile data, I will go as a tourist for 3 weeks, do not want a Chinese SIM

Hi. How about receiving payments?
No. Alipay for foreigners is only for purchase payment, no cash transfer unless you open a China bank account and bind your card to Alipay.
I just set up Alipay with a Visa. Do you know any merchants in US that will accept Alipay? so I can go to test whether I have set up correctly and it is ready to use in China?
Foreigners not allowed to use Alipay or WeChat Pay outside of China. You can only test Chinese merchant not US. local merchant. It's not working
