when the wind blows is a critique and reminder of british attitudes of that generations attitude to nuclear war, the shelter they built is based off of actual british manuals for surviving a nuclear blast. THe sort of happy-go-lucky 'it'll all be alright' attitude is what the film demonstrates as the couple succumbs to sickness
Unpopular opinion but I didn't like The Wind Rises. The way the movie trips over itself to rationalize the main character choosing to support a genocidal regime's war of aggression because it helps him realize his dreams... that's just fucking gross. No-ones dreams are worth millions of lives. Barefoot Gen, In this corner of the world and Grave of the fireflies I don't have a problem with because these characters are kids who had nothing to do with their governments actions, but for somebody with some real influence and goes along with genocide because it benefits himself and the movie tries to make that look okay is just wrong.
