    I remember playing a game of pickup basketball with some eighteen year olds when I turned 40. It literally felt like those kids were teleporting across the court. I just couldn’t believe how quickly I became winded. The next day was even worse because my knees and joints hurt so bad. It was the first time I could tell I’d physically aged. Serena is incredible to even be attempting to play against these young whippersnappers.

      Not sure a first-round, straight-set trouncing of a 40-year-old overweight has-been qualifies as "huge," but at least she dominated as she should've. Getting bageled in the second set has to have Serena wondering. When you can't run with the competition anymore, how long do you stay? With her right arm, she can continue to compete for years probably, but she will be outrun and outhustled by all the major players. Venus got trounced today as well, losing badly in the second set. Maybe they will just keep playing for fun and spending money.

Emma played great, probably the most focused match of her career yet. Probably first time following US Open, she felt less pressure considering more attention was on Serena. As for Serena, sad to see her going away this way. Even after having the baby, she was so good until Australian Open 2021 where she reached semis. As for Serena, nothing left to prove, one of the greatest sporting careers of all time.

    • @dustierbottoms
      @dustierbottoms Год назад +1

      This is exactly why I believe Serena wildly underachieved in her career. Her focus never was all about tennis. She’s perhaps the most gifted female athlete I’ve ever seen, every tournament she entered, she was the clear favorite. And you said so yourself - she was unbeatable. Except she wasn’t. She ranks 5th all time in winning percentage, 5th in wins, and 7th in titles. She played until she was 40! She ranks 1 all time in majors in the open era playing ten more years than graf (who won one less major). Everyone thought she was unbeatable, but she didn’t dominate her generation like Graf, Martina, or seles. This is a career that if you really look at her numbers, it doesn’t leaves you in awe. Her longevity does though. But even then, other greats are much more successful and playing at a higher level at an older age (Tom Brady, lebron, Rodgers, Federer).

    • @dustierbottoms
      @dustierbottoms Год назад +2

      @GoTeam I think that was her only season playing more than 70 matches too. She was never completely focused on tennis and winning. She wasn’t always in peak shape, skipping lesser tournaments and only playing majors. She had other interests…I remember a story she was addicted to online shopping. Maybe this allowed her to play until she’s 40, as most tennis players burned out after 30. Either way, she never dominated like previous greats.

    The match was fun to watch : What an opposition of style, and what a demonstration of mastery by Emma Raducanu in all areas of the game (14 winning strokes and only 1 single unforced error, while she was playing the attack or counter-attack, with a lot of lines...etc), determined and precise from the first to the last point of the match ! 🎾🔥 She really has a magnificent and extremely complete game, varied, efficient and with a great sense of tactics+reading the game, moves really well and has a tricky service to read (slices and often finds the lines)... She will do much much more during the years to come. And she has a noble attitude on the court (in many ways her behavior on court is reminiscent of prime-Federer's attitude).
    Serena tried hard, but Emma dismissed everything and mostly found the smallest flaws. Serena had strong streaks, but unfortunately was not efficient enough when it mattered most. The performance over the entire course of match is obviously not totally consistent, and it's all the more obvious against a Raducanu who is always very focused at every moment of her matches (and clearly brought her A-Game tonight)... But of course she no longer has the slightest thing to prove and it's her farewell tour, so it's a genuine pleasure to witness her play a few more times (similar feeling with Venus, even if it doesn't seem like she's gonna retire now). 🙌✨✨

    Sad to see Serena fade away like this but as for Emma, what a great win and moment. This match proves all along what I though as to why she’s struggled so much this year, yes she’s had a few niggling injuries here and there but largely she has been crushed and backed into a corner by the immense pressure. In this match, for once this season she wasn’t the crowd favourite and the odds weren’t heavily in her favour and lo and behold she actually plays with more freedom and more positive tennis. I’m not sure she’ll be able to back it up against Vika or indeed in NY but it has renewed my hope that when last years points are gone and the huge pressure is lifted she can return to her best because Emma with nothing to lose is incredibly dangerous😊💪🏻

    Don't like the end to that match. You can tell Emma was disappointed that she wasn't a little more friendly. Serena isn't required to do it, but you'd think on her farewell tour she'd be a little more in the "for the next generation" friendly. She added 25 pounds since Toronto. she is emotional eating like there is no tomorrow, which for her is literal. She's dreading not hearing the cheering adulation. The business world will not applaud a rank amateur and devour her savings. Look for Serena to add another 25 lbs between now and US Open. I wouldn't be surprised if she pulled out, too embarrassed to take off her warm-up jacket. This is not going to end well. Rule her out, should have done so years ago

She may have played great tennis in her career but she earned nothing in the class or sportsmanship category. Be gone. The tennis world will be fine without her tempest in a teapot personallity.
