I saw a video about thread (long time ago) that said thread is directional. If you are having knotting issues, knot the cut thread end closes to the spool and this will help. I have tried this and it works great. The other issue with knotting may have to do with the direction you are rolling your needle as you sew.
I always quilted without a hoop. I've tried frames, hoops, and nothing works for me except using basting pins, and either having it on my lap, or my new favorite, on my utility table, and just quilting a section at a time. I have quilted full sized quilts this way, and about to do another this fall. Finally, a quilt for our bed!! I have been busy over the years making wedding quilts for our older daughter, and for my sister's children, and then their babies. After doing some repair work from all of washing from being well loved on our daughter's and her hubby's quilt, I will start on our bed quilt, plus the quilt top my sister made as a wedding gift for us 40+ years ago. I just put on some music, and quilt away!
Hi Wendy. You certainly have a lot more quilting experience than I do. I always quilt on a table and can't use a hoop or do it on my lap. It is like I only cross-stitch at a table with a hoop as I can't manage a frame for them either. Good luck with your projects.
Hi Julie your little quilt is lovely. Thank you for taking the time and patience to show us the hand quilting. I love your channel and look forward to trying the things you teach us. I do hope you will show us how to bind the little quilt too as I've not learned that either. I am sewing wee tiny hexagons as I bought the wrong cutting punch by mistake but it is ok the bigger one is not available for delivery to Ireland but I'll just use a pair of scissors and some old birthday and Christmas cards. At the moment I'm only managing a little bit each day but then I can binge watch you and rest on top of my bed.
Hi Vera. I find the smaller the hexagons the better and it is probably a good thing you didn't get the bigger punch as the bigger it is they more force is needed. I will bind that little quilt next week or the week after as I want to make something easy that someone has suggested and it will need binding as well. All the best to you. Julie
Hi Julie. I made a double sided, ½ inch hexi coaster the other day, out of really tough material and had to quilt in the ditch because it was so thick. It seemed to me, that it would weaken the stiches in the seam, so I think it's best to quilt just inside the seam, like you do.
I find that a lot of white fabrics are like trying to sew through cardboard and the turquoise I use tis the same. I have been told to wash fabrics first to make them softer but I don't wash any of them first. I agree about the ditch possibly weakening the hexagons stitches.
I think I will give your quilting method a go. I usually baste my quilt and use a hoop. Enjoy your videos and will subscribe and get you nearer the thousand you need. Regards from New Zealand.
Hi Barbara. Fir hand quilting and sewing on the binding I use te same needles and they are just ordinary household sewing needles and I haven't a clue what size they are. I just use the ones I keep in that pin cushion. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
So glad to see an example of hand quilting hexagons. Someday I will start quilting. Right now I am enjoying the piecing. Thanks for sharing.
I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment.
Julie, don’t be afraid, we all listen to the knot passing through and I still learned something from you! Thanks . I have 3 flowers done!!
Hi Claudette, well done on getting your flowers done. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
Such lovely delicate stitches. Thanks for your tip on untangling thread. Have a good week everyone.
Thanks Elaine. If I can be of help to anyone it makes it all worthwhile.
That's a nifty trick for the thread, appreciate it thanks.

Hi. Thanks for the advice but I don't tend to have problems with the thread knotting usually but I will do as you suggest in future. Thanks
I will try this, because sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t and I’ve wondered why.

Great hand quilting Julie, it’s snowing here in the UK and 5deg perfect quilting weather ❄️
Thank you Michelle. I love the cold of the UK and would rather be there than here.

You are wonderful. Your info is so complete I finely feel I can quilt out side the ditch.
Looks good.
Thank you very much

Thank you Mary for the comment and for sharing. Thank you also in advance for subscribing. I really appreciate it.
Hi Julie could you please tell me what size needle you are using . I just love learning from you doing hexes is addictive. Many thanks

Do you quilt all the hexigons are just some of them?
In this case I quilted inside the outer edge of all the rounds. If it is a big quilt I would not have done the centre round.
