- How I Quit Being a Leafs Fan: And Why It Felt Like Escaping a Cult

I quit being a Leafs fan after realizing I wasn’t cheering for a team-I was buying into a cycle of monetized heartbreak. Fandom isn’t faith, it’s consumption. Walking away felt like leaving a cult-and it changed my life.

Hey Bro im from Coniston and my grandfather was Toe Blake`s Boss at Inco. I was just talking to my father about George i thought he was from Falconbridge but he said Skead . Cheers
operative word: CORPORATE. that sums up the leafs.
Thanks for sharing. The cycle is real. I see sports as pro wrestling - it’s kayfabe. And it’s part of the ‘Roman circus’. I use pro sports to decompress and see it as cultural entertainment that I shouldn’t take seriously.
Appreciate the thoughtful comment! Totally with you-once you see the kayfabe, it’s impossible to unsee. It’s modern mythology, spectacle, and distraction all at once. Nothing wrong with enjoying it-but yeah, recognizing the Roman circus vibes definitely helps keep it in perspective.
You made many salient observations of the business of modern pro sports and how it conflicts with a fanatical spiritual tie to a franchise that you did not necessarily choose, yet is still part of your soul. It can be a bit exploitative but fans end up choosing to continue the relationship. It’s like a drug of sorts. I can identify with both viewpoints. Great insight. Only a few pro sports franchise fanbases can fully understand what you mean.
You’re always welcome to be a red wings fan with the rest of us 🤣
barf, who would root for that degenerate franchise?
Interesting. I recently said that Leaf fandom has morphed into a cult.
Well the Bruins family will welcome you aboard 🎉
The Canucks and Sabres have never won the Cup. Why do Leaf fans act as if they're unique in their "suffering"? I'm thinking that some sort of entitlement (we're better fans, our city is superior, etc.) must play into that mindset.
If your team has enough influence in your life to make you miserable, I think you're missing the point.
The leafs always do the same thing. Make it to a game 7 and then play the worst possible game.
Funny, when people make fun of the Leafs, no one brings up those stanley cups, but when the Leafs fans complain, all of a sudden their past accomplishments matters…
Exactly I became a St Louis Blues fan during their 86 playoff run. Lost to Calgary in game 7 of the conference finals. Years and decades of playoff losses to follow. At one point they made the playoffs for 25 consecutive years and still never won it all. Just made it that much sweeter when they finally did in 2019. Never thought of cheering for another team.
Just always skip the regular season and only watch playoffs. Might be happier that way.
13 rings how can you leave
When there was 6 teams in the league.
@alex.stationwho cares browns have 8 super bowls
Mlse doest give two shits about winning they’re making money hand over fist. If they lost every game of the year the building would still be sold out. No shits given, fans don’t hold them accountable. This is the result. I don’t know how ANYONE is a leaf fan. There’s nothing to cheer about. I’m a 4th generation leaf hater from the GTA and it’s starting to get sad, from someone who hates the leafs.
Fans do hold them accountable. It’s just Rogers/MLSE doesn’t care
Having child like fandom for a sports team when your an adult is a pathetic grasp of not growing up. 99% of athletes play for the money and lifestyle not the fans or championship aspirations. The 1% ers that want the glory of a championship so bad usually get it. The leafs have no such players.
As you said sports is a for profit business. MLSE coukd give two fucks about a cup. Fans still show up and pay money for this piss poor product.
I have been a leaf fan since 87. But dont have any hope or misguided belief this current team can do anything special.
Dude you are just spewing random "big" words without knowing their meaning, neoliberalism is to blame for you toxic sports fandom, really? :D Next thing you are gonna be calling for the liberation of palestine..
Ppl need to save their $$ and stop supporting them - Youre wasting both tons of $$ and youre time. Let it go like a bad and expensive habit. In places like Florida you can see a game, have a drink and food for less than the cost of parking in Toronto...and its cheaper to rent from a nice hotel and spend a couple nights in Florida for a few games than see a single game - No hotel or food - in Toronto and Florida gets cups. Just stop being suckers for that garbage
You were never a real fan if you quit being one.
Stfu , we waited 86 years for the Red Sox . You need to go deep in the pain cave and listen to 50 mission cap on a constant loop
cubs waited over 100 years.
What happens if Marner played better? The Leafs lose.
What happens if Stolar plays? The Leaf loses.
What happens if Florida is forced to wear the Leaf jerseys and the Leafs wear Panther jerseys in game 7? Florida loses 6 to 1 in game 7.
Capitalism is making you money on RUclips
Right. ...'communism make Leaf better'
Not even communism could do that.
Losers quit on their team
Good job
Enjoy continuing to lose.
quoting karl marx, real name MOSES MORDECHAI LEVI, a TALMUDIC jew, who actively said communism is the political arm of the talmud... Gross.
