Description: "Albert Lebourg was a French Impressionist painter known for his atmospheric depictions of riverside landscapes. “I will paint often at the banks of the Seine: Nanterre, Rueil, Chatou, Bougival, Port-Marly. These are a source of themes and very beautiful landscapes,” he once said. Born on February 1, 1849 in Montfort-sur-Risle, France, he originally studied architecture but switched to painting after enrolling at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen. The artist went on to exhibit his works at the fourth Impressionist Exhibition in 1879, alongside Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro. Though he spent many years living in Algiers, during the late 1880s he settled back in France, where he painted in the environs around Paris, Auvergne, and Normandy. Lebourg’s works were popular with his contemporaries, and he was the subject of several solo exhibitions in Paris during his lifetime. He died on January 6, 1928 in Rouen, France. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others."

Some of his paintings are so good. The colors are awesome. Though not as famous as the other impressionists, I must say that based on what I see here, he is above some of the more famous ones, at least in some works. There goes the danger of overlooking these other lesser known painters. Of course, I knew about him since I have been an artist for almost 40 years. I have to see the bulk of his paintings in person before I could render my objective assessment of him. Throughout my trips around the world, I have seen artists whose works are truly excellent and significant, yet they are not famous. That is a tragedy that we worship the dead artists as great as they were. This robs us of a true understanding of our great contemporaries. This attitude has to change.
