You can use painters tape on the top and bottom of the batteries to keep them from running down and scotch tape on the paper surrounding the batteries to keep them from leaking and store batteries in the device. When u change out close use a battery tester and make sure the batteries still have a strong charge. I would change out your items in the bag every 6 months just like when you change out the battery in your smoke detector and co detector in your home. I would put a pencil sharpener in your bags and unstated pencils. The sharpener can be used to sharpen the points of sticks to cook hot dogs over a fire or other food as well even marshmallows. It stops them from falling into the fire.

When your expiration date gets close, your family could go camping or kids could do a survival weekend in the back yard. You would know what you needed or may need to add.

When I did 72 hr kits for my family, I chose generic colors for all the emergency clothes and sealed them in Food Saver bags. I put the tag with the size
showing through the plastic bag. Once a year , when we changed out the food etc., we passed down the clothes according to who currently wore what size. We put all the bags in a galvanized trash can by the front door. I put a circle of plywood on top and covered it with a table cloth. That way, in an emergency, the can could be taken right to the van. No looking for bags all through the house, or wondering if the kids had gotten into them and eaten or played with stuff. PS Did you know that it is recommended to have the weight of each bag be only 1/4 of the persons weight?

When there were fires near me recently, volunteers who were making packs for firefighters were asking the community for donations of eye drops and lozenges since the smoke/ash in the air were drying out the firefighters eyes and throat. Don't forget that in a natural disaster wildlife is also displaced so could case some trouble. Depending on what you have in your area a snake bandage would be handy, as would bug spray, anti itching cream incase of mosquitos. Hats, sunblock, aloe vera incase you have to do some camping. As you kept saying in the video it depends on the emergency.

One thing for sure you can't take anything for granted and we prepared. We had a tornado move through our area in May. Thank goodness no one was hurt or killed. It damaged some homes and wooded areas. Everyone was in shock. We've even seen 100 year flooding in an area you thought it would never flood. Thanks for sharing with us. Have a good weekend.

Dollar Tree has feminine pads. These are very good to put in first aid kits. They are helpful in case of a cut that is bleeding pretty good. They absorb the blood and makes applying pressure helpful.

You can buy instant coffee packs, like the tiny tubes, from dollar tree and add those. If you’re a regular coffee drinker and don’t have any you’ll be sad 🙃 I added some tea bags and instant coffee to our food bag. I know it sounds morbid, but you also may want to invest in a small tourniquet/quick clot kit, maybe put that in mom and dads bags. These are amazing bags and you did so much work!! Good for you!

We live in a rural area, too, prone to earthquakes and landslides ( our town was cut off from the main road in and out for about a half a year 7 years ago when the deadly Oso landslide happened and wiped out a portion of the highway). That meant trucks to supply our very small grocery and other supplies had to travel twice the distance and time to get to town with supplies. People were scrambling for supplies and food. It was then I decided to make an emergency pack. We also live down the valley from a volcano that has been active in the past. In fact our little town sits on an old lahar so if it became active again, we would need to be ready to evacuate. I have an emergency pack in the car and water, but I like the idea of personal packs, too. Thanks for all your hard work showing us what you’ve done. Very helpful to see! P. S. Love the meal pak ideas!

Great work!!!! We have been working on ours for 4 years lol. Um slowly upgrading the gear to better quality more compact stuff. We have netted hats, beanie and gloves, cotton scarf wich has so so many uses. Small alcohol stove for older people super tiny and compact. Multi tools, water tap key, ill be getting small bolt cutters too. I carry a folding saw, knife and machete. The machete can be replaced with an axe, im not great with axes, I chop better with the small machete. We have military ponchos that can be used as shelter or waterproof sleep sack and either a poncho liner wich is a blanket or a wool blanket. Wool is good because even wet wool will keep you warm. We tie it rolled to the bag. I added a waterproof bag cover in high vis for keeping rain off but also signalling for rescue if needed. We have waterbottles with nesting cup for cooking. Camping cards are waterproof and we added dice for entertainment too.tube lights are great. They are glow sticks that recharge easy and glow for 12 hours. Just hang them off the bag in the day time. Grim Workshop have amazing and useful cards, for almost anything and are worth a look! I love that you share this. We have bags ready as every family should. In sweeten it's what the government recommends and encourages. I would add medication and painkillers etc to the bags also. These bags are handy for a quick rush to hospital too. Clothes and food packed and ready. I have used mine for that a few times, minus the tools ofcourse.

I recommend that as you are going through and removing batteries, that you put the electronics in zipper baggies. It’s a bit more work, but if an emergency happens in the pouring rain, it will protect the electronics from the water!

As a widow who often drives alone to other states to see my adult kids, I keep emergency supplies in my car. But once I heard about Bug Out Bags, I realized I needed to put more items together. I used one of my "stimulus checks" that I received in 2020 to start the process. I watched several videos on youtube and got lots of ideas on what to pack. I also added a sleeping bag and small tent that I keep in my car along with my bag. My bag is actually a duffle bag. All my items can be used for the disaster/emergency, or if I find I need to stop on the road or a hotel unexpectedly. As a single woman traveling alone, this has put my mind (and also my adult children's minds) at ease when I travel alone.

If you encounter toxiic air, each person should have multiple face masks and maybe gloves. Neosporin for cuts and wounds. Maybe the older kids could use a pocket knife. A couple of tarps in the adult bags. An axe and/or mini saw to process firewood in the van.

My parents had our family home in a small town. My dad start our Emergency backpack. My dad was a fire chief and work for the small town. My dad would put military food and emergency food in our backpack. I order Emergency food off from Amazon the emergency food that amazon is good up to 25 years. I don't have to take out the food all I do is add more things in my family emergency backpack.

You have probably already thought of this and either I missed the coverage or you didn't mention it. Packing a package of menstruation napkins could be handy. Not saying anyone will get their period during a 3 day emergency (although it seems my own seems to pick the most inopportune time) but they can make decent quick compresses in a pinch.

My (teenage) daughter was out trail riding with some friends about a year or so ago when she and a much younger girl got lost in the woods. (It's actually happened to her twice😣) So last year for her birthday I made her a bag like that to keep with her when she's out exploring. She recently told me that she had used most of the things in there at least once and she's had to restock the snacks. Now I want to make some for the 3 of us still left at home. I'm also planning to make some type of emergency kit to keep in the trunk of my car at all times.

Thank you so much for putting this together!
I live in KY so our weather is weird 🤣
Also, I was wondering what about for the adults a hiking type backpack where you can roll up a tent and strap it on, just in case it’s needed?
Just a few of things I thought of when watching: (1) what about those cheap 5 dollar fleece blankets that Walmart carries - I’m thinking at Christmas. (2) Bug (off) spray (3) ace bandage (4) life vest that can clip on to backpack (5) Spare batteries (6) blow up pillow - like the neck pillows, but I’ve seen just a regular pillow (7) emergency hi vis vest (8) face masks ie N95 masks (9) Whistle (10) Waterproof bag - like you would put your cell phone in when you're going to be in the water. You could put personal info in it so it would stay dry.
I thought the same thing about the batteries as the other viewer that you mentioned. I realized this with some of my Christmas decorations last year.
Those lamps are awesome! We have several.
I also have some life flashlights that have the different settings on them such as an emergency flashing light. I got those years ago from Walmart. They are super light-weight. No batteries (that I know of) and supposed to be able to send them in for a replacement.
EDITED: Found my little flashlight that I mentioned above the website is www.lifegear.com ... This is like the one that I have: www.lifegear.com/shop-now/flashlights/glow-r-flashlight-red
I was also thinking too for the list: What about Gloves (hiking, latex free - like the drs use, winter)

I think you are doing a great job with the bags! Definitely a learning process. We have had our bags in place for 4 or 5 years but your videos have reminded me to do my 6 month refresh on them. We also have a separate bag for our dog, including vet/vaccination records in case we have to stay somewhere that requires it, or board her somewhere. I also have an emergency binder that I keep (needs to be updated!) that has photocopies of our ID's, basic health records/current medication lists and other similar info. I put computer memory cards with all our family photos in it as well, in case of emergency evac/fire we would be able to remake our albums in the future. We are a family of 4 and on a pretty tight budget. I was able to get 4 very nice backpacks at thrift stores and did most of the items inside at the dollar store!

Also you could use a larger tarp to use for shelter with Paracord to shelter with also. Get something to put your important papers in ie birth certificate ID card and house information bank info Insurance and cash. You never know what will happen. So have cash on hand. Pocketcooker are good to have too. They use fuel but they work great for this. 🙃❤️

Last winter, three counties in my state were hit with a ice storm that knocked power out for nearly two weeks in places. Ours was out for 9 days. But because I was prepared, I already had kerosene and propane for my heaters. We were stocked on food and water. Because I'm a home canner, I was able to feedmy family homecooked meals that I'd put back. We lost about $400-$500 from our fridge and freezers. So next thing we're looking into is a generator or maybe solar power.

Use Ziploc bags. And gather all hygiene items in one bag for each family member. A food bag for each member. Everything in one bag. Entertainment items in one bag. Gather all small items in one bag. That way there are fewer loose items in bag and cuts that search time down for each item. Also can place many things in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. To reduce some weight for Mom and Dad to carry. Also can double as a seat to sit on. Can be emptied to carry water. Multi use item.

Something I dont think you have thought of for your bags or the kids. For the kids bags you should put a laminated card with emergency names and phone numbers for people to contact if you get split up, like your mobile number, Travis, maybe your mums and your eldest son (I.C.E numbers) and a family photo. So they have it to look at and also again if you get split up someone would know what you and travis look like so they dont get given to someone else. For your and Travis bag you should have copies of your driving license, and insurance documents (car, health, house).

Once you have all of your bags packed, take the whole family for a hike and see how everyone does with the weight in their packs, next try a 3-day camping trip using only what you have packed in your bags. This will help you hone down to the things that really matter. Do it while it isn't important so that when it is an emergency you know how to use your things and if you really have what you need and don't need. Don't carry what you don't need. Every family is different. Remember food, shelter, and water are the most important things. Watch a few backpacking (what's in my bag) prep videos. They can give you some good ideas as well. I used to do the emergency pack but now I just use the backpack method. I can go a whole week for what I carried for 3 days weightwise. Remember that when you are under stress it's easier to get injured, so practice with your gear, it will take the stress off and be more like second nature.

Love the video wow you did so much work and a lot of research!! We have those backpacks too with a lot of caribener clips that can be used to attach some things that could be stored on the outside of backpack. A hand sanitizer bottle easy to use while wearing it even, a whistle/compass or flashlight to be used kind of hands free, waterproof bag for cell phone or other items, even mugs/collapsible cups just hanging on the outside may save room for the items inside. I have a female friendly bathroom option/product if no actual toilets were available and also some toilet seat covers too are lightweight and easy to throw inside a bag. Can't wait to see more of your videos and learn more tips and tricks!!

You should add a extra large Ziploc bag to the bags. If you would need use a portable shower it would keep your clothes and towels dry while in the shower. I use them when we deploy with Red Cross.

These are great! I recommend several different kinds of face coverings, a few masks and also bandannas. They could be used during forest fire situations to protect the face etc. The bandannas are also multi use, could be used to wrap a wound, or keep the sun off your face. I love the head/neck wraps from Buff because they could be used in so many ways.
