tiktok has helped me find amazing artists and helped me find some really good songs. it definitely overplays some of them to the point where I don't enjoy the song as much.
I love the image of the clam & pearl turning to needles & her caressing the lifeless, cold cast of an idealized male figure. I think this song is about lust, but also a deep desire to be accepted & actually loved, to not be the idealized, lifeless statue but the real flesh and blood and flawed self. The sudden change of the pearl to needles shows the hostility and alienation of her sexuality she feels about not being the one he really wants, as she clings to the false image of him.
@@itsrainingmelons6202 Sort of, but I think Mitski's songs are usually a bit more complex than just like, exploit me / exploit him. @@sparklejumpropequeen5468 I feels like 00’s vibes because of how the lyrics kind of blends in with the rhythm. Kind of like how with some song you make the beat more harsh and the lyrics might be i sync but with music like this the words blend into the beat
I like how it sounds like a washing machine, she’s a genius. Edit: PEOPLE PEOPLE. THE SONG DOES NOT ACTUALLY COME OUT OF MY WASHING MACHINE. (That would be very cool though) I meant that the beat of the song reminds me of the sounds that a washing machine *can* make (opening or shutting the door) as well as the heavy guitar in the background which kind of mimics the humming sound a washing machine sometimes makes when it’s on. But mostly the melody Mitski is using is very interesting because it goes: (start)/up/down a bit/down/more down/up a bit/up This sequence kind of has a going round-and-round pattern, which reminded me of a washing machine, if that makes sense :)
this song really hits so hard, especially the "i know who you pretend i am" and "why not me". i have a childhood friend and we've been close, until we moved to another country and i lost contact with him. years later, we saw each other again. i have always liked him and i never had the chance to confess, so when i saw him again after all these years i decided to just do it. we kissed, then i found out he's still inlove with his ex and told me he still love her. i was so fucking heartbroken and embarrassed. they're happy now, but i still can't get over him.
Theory: "do mi ti" the lyrics used to explain the notes she sings for the next lyrics "why not me" can also be representative of the singer crying. When most people audibly cry its a high pitch or whine (do) followed by an inhale (mi) and another whine (ti). "why not me" could also be viewed as the singer crying them because of the style at which she does so. Okay that's all thank you :)
Sorry English not my first language but I think it also means that her partner doesn’t care much about what she says so to him it sounds like do mi ti when she repeatedly asks him
I’m getting the impression that this is sung from the perspective of a mistress to a married man, but she’s in love with him while he is only using her for pleasure. “Why not me?” Why won’t he acknowledge their “love” and marry her when he says that he desires her so much. He uses her love to distract himself from his unfulfilling marriage, and therefore he uses her “washing machine heart” (her love and care) to “clean his dirty shoes” (wash away the bitterness he feels from his marriage, but he only uses her for that and nothing more and doesn’t intend to settle down with her).
“Though I’ve closed my eyes I know who you pretend I am” him pretending that he’s getting the pleasure from his wife rather then actually seeing her as a person
The song is called washing machine heart if you listen carefully you can hear the references to heartbeats and washing machines, for examples the heartbeats can be the bangs we heard at the beginning 0:00 and 0:07 and you can hear the washing machine in 0:02 and 2:04, also 0:38 and 1:50 are possibles references to washing machine alarms, mitski music genius Edit: This isnt confirmed its something that I found interesting to point, maybye mitski and producers didnt made it with that intentions.
the “i know who you pretend i am” line punches me in the gut every time - mitski’s lyricism can be so straightforward and yet carries such an emotional weight
I feel like she is talking about how she is being used by everyone around her hence the "washing machine heart" bit and how nobody will really give her a chance hence the "kiss me already" and "I thought we would kiss tonight" bit. I also thought the " kiss me already" bit was how she was desperate for people to see her as more than a stepping stone or a doormat. but the " and toss your dirty shoes in my washing machine heart" bit was when she finally accepted that, that was what people saw her as. the I know what you pretend I am is how people perceive her as a tool or something to use like a washing machine and the why not me bit is how she thinks she isn't in their league and is just something they can just use and throw away
@@lightbringer3271 yea theyre representing someone elses grieve and junk which they just dump on her to then feel light hearted and everyones just using her as a machine to vent on to but noone cares about how she herself feels and if shes doing ok
I love how the lyrics are so simple yet deep and many people can relate to the hurt feeling of wanting someone who doesn’t feel the same. I certainly can, and sending much love to anyone out there who’s also suffering
Fun fact: I was listening to the song with my ex explaining the deep meaning behind the song to her and in the end she did the exact same thing. Which means she was always somewhere else. She said that everyone has their secrets but I never thought that the secret was that she never gave up on her toxic ex of 4 years relationship. I was just the means of being with him again and choosing him in the end.
Plus she knew mostly everything bout me(everything I've been through) and she promised not to be another one shit-person like the rest but she was one of the worse of the kind.

i agree but its just annoying when you love a really underrated song (just like play date by melanie martinez) then it gets popular and people call it a "tiktok song"
I love all the songs of Mitski. They transmit peace, sadness, and beautiful sensations, sometimes they give me nostalgia, but it's beautiful. I really hope that Mitski is more recognized because he really deserves it.
I believe this song is about a toxic relationship that the singer is blindly unaware of, the singer is going down to the level of an inanimate appliance, like she feels inhuman around them, which she is blindly following, and it says "toss your dirty shoes in my washing machine heart" which could be a metaphor for the other person taking his emotions out on the singer, which is really sad when peel away the layers
i think she’s aware the relationship is toxic because in the first line she tells him to toss his shoes in her washing machine heart. she knows she’s only being used as his rebound of sorts and the “why not me?” is her asking why she isn’t more than his object to be used. like he’s using her as a stepping stone so he can improve himself for someone else, but not improving himself for her. she’s just a part of his way to get there. at least that’s what i was getting from it.
@@moriahhiggs4604 pretty good analysis, I also have a theory about "I know who you pretend I am" line, maybe the other guy in the relationship was neglected or abused by a important figure in their lives, and is taking their pent-up anger on the singer
1:48 i absolutely love this part because its so hauntingly emotional for me. when all is said and done and she comes down from ecstacy, she opens her once closed eyes to realise that it was all just a fantasy she had. in the moment her eyes open, the bubble pops, and she's left with the unforgiving reality that her lover is in love with someone else. in that moment, her only thoughts are, "why not me?" on repeat, ergo the repeating and pleading lyrics as if shes begging for a reason. why couldn't you love me instead? i gave my body, my heart and i let you hurt me. but still why do you look away? *why not me?*
Damn, this kinda inspired me to start creating an expressionist story about 2 characters, man and a woman who escape their institutionalized military life in the medieval ages. Later in the story a 3rd character (male) comes in and helps them in escaping, and even more further down the story when the first 2 characters have a close moment it turns out that the guy is actually gay and out for the 3rd new guy. Resulting in the woman being left alone as the 2 guys wander off together leaving her staring into nothing, betrayed, while this song plays. I'm a grown ass man btw, i shouldn't be saying stuff like this with a straight face
love how this melody brings me a feeling of 1990-2000s vibe that I experienced in childhood.. I've been missing such "unexpected" chords sequences music for almost 20 years, so tired of simplicity, and this one is brilliant
idk if you like why didn’t you stop me on be the cowboy but i love this song and that one for this very reason, those sounds shes able to make is so brilliant and it makes me feel so nostalgic
the thing about this song is that because of the off chords, its not like other music which makes you pay attention to the song and makes it so addictive. Mitski's music is the definition of abstract
I think...When she sings "Toss your dirty shoes in my washing machine heart", is a metaphor to healing the person she loves; She will help you clean your past, your wrong steps. The dirty shoes: your past, pain, wrong steps. Washing machine heart: Your entire self (or your heart) trying to heal it; Maybe the song is about give your entire yourself to a person and allow them to use you as their pillar to surpass the pain because you love them enough to do it; But in the end, you get rejected, in a agonizing and lonely way. If I'm being dumb in this interpretation, forgive me. Is 00:37 in the evening and I don't have any more braincells. P.S: I don't know why, but this song sounds so deep and touch a place of my heart that I don't existed; It gives me a nostalgic sensation of love in a hurtful way.
*I dont really know what the meaning of the song is.. but here is how i see it:* *1. Relationships/love* Doing everything for a person you love or a person youve been together with, but them choosing someone elses over you. "Why not me?": why them and not me even tho i did everything for them "thoss your dirty shoes in my washing machine heart": always being there for them but them ignoring you or like i said choose someone else over you. *2. Friendship* Always helping your friends but as soon as you talk about your problems you get ignored or they say "same, i feel you".. again the lyric with the dirry shoes.. washing their dirty shoes: their problems but just being a washing machine, not getting the help you need. / or being in love with your friend *3. How i feel:* My dad is an alcoholic etc and when i see kids with a healthy family or healthy parents relationship i always think "why not me" He also used me to talk about his problems even tho im still a child. *4. i know who you pretend iam:* Having someone who hurts you because of their past trauma, maybe someone that just use you to live their dreams and live or having someone that pretends that youre someone they loved but never got, and you know you never will be enough for them and that its toxic, but still you cant escape. *5. need to be loved* "Why not me": always seing people in a healthy relationship while you cant go into one or always got into unhealthy toxic relationships, also feeling the need no be loved and dreaming about an unhealthy way of love.. example: being stalked, because you think you are not loved enough, so you dream about unhealthy relationships where youre being mistreated, because you also feel empty.. like a nobody
thank you.I feel so grateful I found your comment. The needing to be loved, dreaming about being stalked and emptyness are accurate about me.I could tell you how many times I imagine myself being in an unhealthy relationship and it feel so good, it brings seretonin in my brain I couldn't understand why. Honestly this song literally just gives me the creeps and makes me feel miserable each time I listen to it. I have no idea why, the vibe is incredibly sad and just hopeless altogether like…
"why not me?" Imagine someone losing their mind after their heart got played just because someone mistook them as another person. The pain and betrayal that is too realistic for them to handle it.
"I know who you pretend I am" the fact that the singer knew that someone they like doesn't view them as who they are. Rather, as another person who they programmed it into their mind.
Shout out to the class tough guy back in high school who blasted this from his lifted jeep in the (almost) empty school parking lot at 6 AM one morning. Hope you’re doing alright bro.
Isn't this about being the second choice actually? Someone here got into a relationship, that caused them to feel bad, so their shoes are now dirty, but Mitski loves this person as well, so she wants to wash their shoes in her "Washing Machine Heart", so she wants to give them the love they need after their relationship went wrong. It would fit with the "I know who you pretend I am" part, suggesting that they imagine the person they broke up with while hanging out with Mitski, and Mitski asking "Why not me?" since she from the start wanted to give them love, but they didn't choose her.
for me it kind of incites bad feelings, a feeling of longing. i slept to this when i found out my guinea pig had cancer, i was so burnt out for a few days.
Okay so I have a theory, and I think that this song is actually a lot more sexual than everyone thinks. I think it’s about a failing relationship that lacks love, passion, companionship, etc, etc, and the song is mainly referring to the more romantic/sensual side of the relationship that’s lacking, while also maybe trying to point at a possibility of there being another person who is has mistress position in this relationship. So like first “toss your dirty shoes in my washing machine heart” shoes can be a reference to sex as in “knocking boots”. “Washing machine heart” could symbolize how he’s using her as an object when it comes to their sexual interactions (meaning skipping foreplay or anything romantic that leads up to her personal stimulation and pleasure, and a connection between them) and because of this it’s hurting her (/her heart) and the toss part could symbolize how he treats her like she’s nothing (like an object!!) which might be why in the music video she touches and hugs statues because she identifies with them (but it could also symbolize how her husband acts towards her attempts in bringing romance back into the relationship). This line gives me sarcasm and resentment like she’s slightly angry with him for treating her like nothing, as if she’s saying “yup just toss your penis in me and treat me like I’m nothing 😐” and the “baby bang it up inside” like cmon y’all BANG it UP INSIDE to me is a clear reference to sex but also how their sex dynamic is uncomfortable for her because there’s no pleasure for her, just him using her vagina, cause when I think about shoes ina. Washing machine, i think it would be loud and sound chaotic yk?? And then the “I’m not wearing my usual lipstick I was hoping we could kiss tonight”-which symbolizes her attempt in trying to be romantic, sexy, different for her husband to try to spice things up and get the romance back, and to incite foreplay and true stimulation. Thennn the “baby though I’ve closed my eyes I know who you pretend I am” this is where I think the possibility of there being another person comes into play. So the close my eyes part could symbolize how she chooses to ignore it and not bring it up to her partner but she knows that there’s someone else that he gives this romantic attention to that she longs for, which goes into “I know who you pretend I am” which could mean that she knows he only has sex with her to hold him off when he can’t see his mistress and that maybe he’s thinking about the mistress while having sex with her. The “Do Mi Ti why not me” part could symbolize how she’s questioning why he doesn’t love her and isn’t attracted to her anymore. If you look at the video, the sexual references are crazy. First of all, at 0:27 the way she’s rubbing herself, at 0:55 the movement shes doing with the two fingers, pointing towards her vagina which I’m sure y’all can infer what that insinuates, but also, notice how many times she’s using two fingers? And you know what we use two fingers for😏 (fingering or rubbing the vagina) that could symbolize what she wants him to do to her (longing for foreplay) or maybe what she has to do to herself to feel pleasure. Or both! Maybe that’s why she puts the two fingers in his mouth to symbolize, trying to force foreplay or romance onto him and he obviously doesn’t respond. But also, the part where she has the clam, and the way she rubs it at first, and then she tries to open it to get to the pearl, but it turns into pins😬 the pearl is an automatic reference to the clitoris of the vagina. So it could symbolize how when she tries to incite foreplay with him, it’s rejected resulting in the sex being unsatisfying or even painful for her, or it could be how she’s not even able to satisfy herself because of how much she’s hurting mentally from this neglect of love from her husband that she longs for. The taxidermy bird could relate back to how she identifies with objects (cause sometimes when you’re hurt like that and go crazy, you start doing/taking interest in weird things) and how she relates to her looking alive and like a human but feeling like nothing/dead inside because of her predicament with her spouse. And thennn the match in the video could represent how the spark of their relationship is gone and lastly, the color of the video. It’s all black, white and gray which could symbolize the dullness and lack of liveliness in their relationship. I agree with a lot of the other theories on what this song means but this is just another perspective!!!! Sorry if this is confusing lmao
But also think about it, with a washing machine, you only use it when you need it, and you only use it for one thing, and you always have to use the dryer after because you don’t want to wear wet clothes, and the dryer makes your clothes nice, soft, and dry for you to use and it only ever gets clean clothes put in it ;)
@@slotterdoll6667 I’m so glad that my view point made sense to you :))) a lot of people who have been married or in a relationship for a long time have said that the romance dies and it’s hard to stay in love with one another, therefore affecting the intimate aspect of their relationship and this reminded me of that :)
i discovered this song last night. It popped as a recommendation in my spotify playlist, while I was crying because I always feel the need to fix everyone and that it's my responsibility to find solutions for everyone's problems, it's like if I prepare the world for everyone else but no one does the same effort for me and it's so exhausting to be the friend of the group who's less depressed and carrying everyone, so thank you mitski you appeared at the right time.
I feel the exact same way. It's difficult and draining but I always go back to this song when I'm feeling overwhelmed. @@farmerbeast and when ur mentally unstable that also doesnt mean ur life is automatically being fucked over etc. U can have a perfectly stable life, but ur mental health and own stability is shit. I like how it sounds like a washing machine, she’s a genius.
Edit: PEOPLE PEOPLE. THE SONG DOES NOT ACTUALLY COME OUT OF MY WASHING MACHINE. (That would be very cool though)
I meant that the beat of the song reminds me of the sounds that a washing machine *can* make (opening or shutting the door) as well as the heavy guitar in the background which kind of mimics the humming sound a washing machine sometimes makes when it’s on.
But mostly the melody Mitski is using is very interesting because it goes:
(start)/up/down a bit/down/more down/up a bit/up
This sequence kind of has a going round-and-round pattern, which reminded me of a washing machine, if that makes sense :)

this song really hits so hard, especially the "i know who you pretend i am" and "why not me". i have a childhood friend and we've been close, until we moved to another country and i lost contact with him. years later, we saw each other again. i have always liked him and i never had the chance to confess, so when i saw him again after all these years i decided to just do it. we kissed, then i found out he's still inlove with his ex and told me he still love her. i was so fucking heartbroken and embarrassed. they're happy now, but i still can't get over him.

My Christmas is perfect with this song.
Why ?
I’m getting the impression that this is sung from the perspective of a mistress to a married man, but she’s in love with him while he is only using her for pleasure. “Why not me?” Why won’t he acknowledge their “love” and marry her when he says that he desires her so much. He uses her love to distract himself from his unfulfilling marriage, and therefore he uses her “washing machine heart” (her love and care) to “clean his dirty shoes” (wash away the bitterness he feels from his marriage, but he only uses her for that and nothing more and doesn’t intend to settle down with her).
Omg wait this is one of the best interpretations
right this is how i see it too
Well she’s in the wrong if she decides to go with a married man regardless of how well their relationship is going.
That really makes sense! I interpret like someone who is used just for pleasure and to hear other people's problems, seen as a friend.
“Though I’ve closed my eyes I know who you pretend I am” him pretending that he’s getting the pleasure from his wife rather then actually seeing her as a person
This woman has made the most beautiful songs holy shit.

The song is called washing machine heart if you listen carefully you can hear the references to heartbeats and washing machines, for examples the heartbeats can be the bangs we heard at the beginning 0:00 and 0:07 and you can hear the washing machine in 0:02 and 2:04, also 0:38 and 1:50 are possibles references to washing machine alarms, mitski music genius

I was just the means of being with him again and choosing him in the end.

these songs make me feel sad, but then i remember did i ever feel happy?

*why not me?*
this comment gonna make me have a mental breakdown 😭
Damn, this kinda inspired me to start creating an expressionist story about 2 characters, man and a woman who escape their institutionalized military life in the medieval ages. Later in the story a 3rd character (male) comes in and helps them in escaping, and even more further down the story when the first 2 characters have a close moment it turns out that the guy is actually gay and out for the 3rd new guy. Resulting in the woman being left alone as the 2 guys wander off together leaving her staring into nothing, betrayed, while this song plays.

I think...When she sings "Toss your dirty shoes in my washing machine heart", is a metaphor to healing the person she loves; She will help you clean your past, your wrong steps. The dirty shoes: your past, pain, wrong steps. Washing machine heart: Your entire self (or your heart) trying to heal it;
Maybe the song is about give your entire yourself to a person and allow them to use you as their pillar to surpass the pain because you love them enough to do it; But in the end, you get rejected, in a agonizing and lonely way.
If I'm being dumb in this interpretation, forgive me. Is 00:37 in the evening and I don't have any more braincells.

*I dont really know what the meaning of the song is.. but here is how i see it:*
*1. Relationships/love*
Doing everything for a person you love or a person youve been together with, but them choosing someone elses over you.
"Why not me?": why them and not me even tho i did everything for them "thoss your dirty shoes in my washing machine heart": always being there for them but them ignoring you or like i said choose someone else over you.
*2. Friendship*
Always helping your friends but as soon as you talk about your problems you get ignored or they say "same, i feel you".. again the lyric with the dirry shoes.. washing their dirty shoes: their problems but just being a washing machine, not getting the help you need. / or being in love with your friend
*3. How i feel:*
My dad is an alcoholic etc and when i see kids with a healthy family or healthy parents relationship i always think "why not me"
He also used me to talk about his problems even tho im still a child.
*4. i know who you pretend iam:*
Having someone who hurts you because of their past trauma, maybe someone that just use you to live their dreams and live or having someone that pretends that youre someone they loved but never got, and you know you never will be enough for them and that its toxic, but still you cant escape.
*5. need to be loved*
"Why not me": always seing people in a healthy relationship while you cant go into one or always got into unhealthy toxic relationships, also feeling the need no be loved and dreaming about an unhealthy way of love.. example: being stalked, because you think you are not loved enough, so you dream about unhealthy relationships where youre being mistreated, because you also feel empty.. like a nobody

WOW I CANNOT BELIEVE MITSKI INVENTED FILM NOIRE

😱😱😱
But also think about it, with a washing machine, you only use it when you need it, and you only use it for one thing, and you always have to use the dryer after because you don’t want to wear wet clothes, and the dryer makes your clothes nice, soft, and dry for you to use and it only ever gets clean clothes put in it ;)
dam dude u opened my eyes, literally the best/with most sense theory ive read. I now hear and see this song way different in a good way ofc.
@@slotterdoll6667 I’m so glad that my view point made sense to you :))) a lot of people who have been married or in a relationship for a long time have said that the romance dies and it’s hard to stay in love with one another, therefore affecting the intimate aspect of their relationship and this reminded me of that :)
Yeah I agree with you, the part "baby, bring is up inside 🎶" also means something like that.
This makes a lot of sense
This is the kind of song to listen to when things in your life just fall apart badly
Or like when your plane decides to crash 💀

i discovered this song last night.
I am currently part of a friend group made up of some very mentally unstable people and within this group i am always the one they turn to in times of need and I'm seen as this pinnacle of strength holding everyone up. It's difficult and draining but I always go back to this song when I'm feeling overwhelmed. My friends go to me when they're in need, I go to mitski when I'm in need :")
Anyways, I hope you're doing okay. Remember to take care of yourself and set appropriate boundaries when you need to
I feel that too. You feel like you have to help them, and you even forget to take care of yourself.
@@hollygallagher1581 what a waste of time tbh why would ur Friends cry about life they are prob fucking up their own lives because i got some issue to but i dont cry about it 'to my friends and iam doing pretty good in life tbh
@@farmerbeast going to someone for help doesnt equal crying, for one. Nor does it mean they're "crying about life".
But have u never heard anyone say, "That was a good cry"?
Bc crying can help for others since everyone has their own way of coping/helping themselves. I mean, there is a reason why not being able to cry is apparently one of the worst psychological pains (something along those lines). Or if that's not the right quote, it can still cause some problems/point to problems if ur not able to cry.
Bc it's just another way of expression.
@@farmerbeast and when ur mentally unstable that also doesnt mean ur life is automatically being fucked over etc. U can have a perfectly stable life, but ur mental health and own stability is shit.
Either way, it depends on what a person does to say "they are prob fucking up their own lives". Going to someone to get the *support* for ur *unstable* health is quite literally doing the exact opposite of fucking up ur life, but instead takes a step in the opposite direction.

Baby, bang it up inside
