I've noticed the drop-off in streaming and RUclips numbers for Lana in recent years, and I believe this is because *zero effort* was put in marketing. Remember when Lana picked the most basic selfies as covers for her first singles? The first time, I thought it was cool that she rebelled against her label (who wanted her to send in prettier pictures), but in the long run, this was damaging to the promotion of her new music. Thumbnails is everything these days. It didn't help that behind the thumbnail, there wasn't even a proper music video to play and replay. Music videos usually perform very well because of their 3 minute runtime and 100% watchtime. Yet, for the last couple of years, Lana puts out a single as audio only, then weeks later comes a music video, which is often 10 minutes long (nice from an artistic standpoint, but not good for the algorithm). Her music videos underperform since NFR (with the exception of Doin' Time, but even that would have done better if they didn't split the numbers by releasing separate audio and video). It didn't help that her last 3 albums didn't get a tour. I totally support Lana if she chose to not give a F about commercial success and just wants to truely commit to her art, but I wish her new music the success it deserves. It should not be sabotaged by ignoring the basic principles of marketing and how music platforms work. I remember there was so much exciting stuff going on back in the day with her earlier releases, like the Honeymoon hotline, the H&M campaign, collab with the Weeknd... so much care used to be put in her marketing. I don't blame Lana personally, I rather feel like her label dropped her (not officially, but morally) especially after the Question for the culture. Her team needs to listen to the fans: when we demand the Apple Event live version of How to Disappear to be put on Spotify and have its own RUclips video, why not do it (negotiate it with the respective parties)? When we demand her Lizzy Grant classics to be finally released (I know you don't wanna share the profit with the old indie label, but do it for the fans)? Look how successful Say Yes to Heaven is! When we demand that you fix the audio mix on her televised live performances (Radio 1 Live Lounge, Big Weekend, MITA, ... the back vocals are too loud)! Give more spotlight to the new fan favourites like Dealer, Tulsa Jesus Freak, Cinnamon Girl - start to perform them live! (Let Byron sing the male Dealer part) We Lana fans have been through so much with her from the beginning, and will continue to support Lana, I just hope that her team does more about the issues that are outside our control, so her music can unfold its whole potential. Even in these darker times, she has given us the Blue Banisters album, which became my new all-time favourite, so thank you Lana!
