I just watched a video from a couple weeks back, of some folks in one of the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, one of them cannot remember) stockpiling scrap car wheels like these to turn into wood stoves for Ukraine. With so much of their infrastructure being targeted, the stoves provide comfort and warmth to civilians when needed. They were also filling them with humanitarian aid before shipping across their borders. All voluntary! The only difference I noted was they used smaller wheels as they stacked them, resulting in a narrower top. Such an intuitive design and easily replicated, I enjoyed watching this video as it was far more in depth on the manufacturing aspect than the one I watched previously.
This reminds me of the stove my grandfather made that we called the Martian, it was mad out of old bus rims and some plate steel, heated the house for 40years before they got a commercial stove. Huge labor investment! Cool (no, hot) finished product. Thumb up! Damper door seemed crude, I have not heated with wood for decades, I might not remember right, but I think my stove had slides that were able to fine tune incoming air for a really long burn time.
Thank you very much! The difficult part is to create the first full circle. Once you do it it's very easy. It just needs patience and to go around over and over again by slightly pressing the cutting disc.
It is hard to believe, someone who can stick weld & use the proper tool for the job on youtube! Great Job, bet simi rims would have made one to heat a whole house, great job.
Came here because I have 6 old Mobile Home rims and have been wanting a wood stove for my shop. I like how yours takes up as little of the shop floor as ppossible. And the Mobile home rims have no center, so my build will be a lot easier.

3:14 Preparing for the barbecue? Nice build indeed. :) However, I think a flame deflector plate will improve efficiency. It's simply an angled plate where the gasses have to pass before entering the chimney pipe. This means the gasses have to be in there for a longer time and will be burned more efficiently.
I like it! I would use it! One question... You welded everything except the handle? Why did you bother to drill and tap the handle when you could have just welded that too. I know! You ran out of welding sticks! Right? Just out of curiosity... How many sticks and cutoff wheels do you think you used for this project?
Thank you very much for your comments!! I just wanted to experiment a little. Plus it looks nicer this way! In total I used a box of sticks and around 4-5 cutoff wheels!! 😊👍👍
Thank you very much for your comments! I am sure it will last for a REALLY LONG TIME!!! 😊👍 Archaeologists from the future might find it one day and be confused! 😄😄
Very interesting! I built a barrel stove for the shop using a length of thirty inch diameter pipe, (about 5/16 inch wall thickness) from the salvage yard and my own door with a draft on each end so I can control the burn. Once I get a good bed of coals going, I can put a three foot long log in it fourteen inches in diameter. Depending on the weather, it will hold a fire for as much as two days.
Wow... watched this and gonna bang one of these out in an hour... 5 years later, the wife asking what the rims have been sitting here all this time for... Waiting till I have skills .. Nice work.
Thank you very much for your comments! I did it . However when I was building the wood stove it was during the covid lockdown and it was impossible to buy some this is why it is not shown on the video... 😊👍👍

I wanted to put a small door on top and I had this circular door here in stock so I decided to install it! All the other wood stoves I searched in RUclips had 3 doors. In addition you can open this door to allow more air to go up chimney. This will clear the stove of smoke with out opening bottom draft door which will increase the strength/heat of the actual fire.
Looks pretty cool! Maybe more ventilation? I was thinking the same.. you know what really stinks? Most of the best designs and they don’t look to hard , none of them are in English.. that stinks worse than day old fish...🧑🏽🦽🎣🇺🇸
Thank you very much for your comments! As it was mentioned in the previous comment you can find them in junkyards. In many countries they also manhole covers for private use in hardware stores.
Marvellous. Totally rivoting. Better than any famous Crimi series. Totally absorbing. If only I could weld and had the construction ideas like you. I bet you were top of you class for practical mechanical engineering. What would you have done without the man-hole covers? NOW, the crucial Question: How well does it function? Can you grill a steak on the top manhole section? Boil a kettle quickly? A pot of potatoes or soup? Cheers.
Thank you very much for your comments! I am glad you liked it! Growing up in Greece unfortunately we didn't have such courses in school... However I was that kid in the neighborhood who would fix all his friend's bicycles! 😄 If I hadn't thought of the manhole cover solution I would have bought a couple of metal sheets, cut them in circles and use them instead. The wood stove worked fine but to be honest I didn't use it a lot... My son liked it so much that he took it and placed it in his apartment as a decorative item!! 😊👍

🔥🔥🔥I think this is a great use of old tyre rims and a drain covers, wonder if there are pot holes now 😁 , unless youre very good at arc welding this would be better done with a MIG welder for a cleaner finish , I like the design and it seems great to use but it will get very hot, 300 to 400`c easily with a couple of good logs on it and if its used indoor you would have to ensure that all your welds are seam welding and sealed against toxic gasses leaking out. I wonder about the longevity of the steel rims though with the heat and wonder whether it would have been better to weld some steep plate baffles to the inside of the rims to give some protection for the fierce heat this will generate , you could easily pop a cauldron on top of this and bring it to the boil.... I was surprised to see drain covers that are not cast as those you wouldn't not normally be able to weld to plate steel. it needs specialist skill to weld cast iron . It looks fun to have in your workshop or garden room. Well done.....I like it a lot.🔥🔥🔥
That was cool! And from the looks of it then it was probably pretty cheap to gather the materials too. It looked like just old scrap iron that you turned into something very useful. Great idea!!!
@@RustisGold Nothing wrong with that at all sir. You save money and you made something that you're not likely to see any time soon so it is a one of a kind build. I'm all for that all right!
Chimney Sweep: No secondary combustion air or air wash over the glass door. At best this 15% combustion efficient, expect to have a lot of soot production and a chimney fire every year, as well as excessive sooting on the door itself. Add a baffle at the top to increase flue gas residency time inside the burn chamber, as well as some refractories to insulate the steel. If you have a few pipes with holes drilled in them to introduce more air, just under the baffle, to burn the unburnt gasses you'll have better fuel efficiency. I would recommend looking at some of the modern woodstoves for inspiration on how to incorporate these features. Otherwise this is very reminiscent of early pot belly coal stoves. Edit: Also, single wall pipe has an 18" clearance to combustibles, use double wall next time to get down to a 6" clearance. That being said as this is an unlised stove, in the States this requires a 36" clearance to combustibles. I could go on but it's a neat DIY.
@@RustisGoldtbh it was a shame it had to be painted...I loved the look of the bare and partly bare steel..gave it a very industrial look..now if there was a high temp clear lacquer.. 😁
Unless space is a concern, I would leave the cast sewer covers full size to help diffuse out the heat. Old two piece truck rims would make a nice fat stove, they're not street legal most places (and dangerous ass hell) so this would be a good way to retire them. Kudos, nice build sir.
Bravo mastora! Amazing job! :) If anyone does not know - the upper door is usually used for the supply of coal or briquettes. Then when the stove burns and is full of embers and can not be refilled through the lower door... :) Greetings from Sofia gitounaki mou! :)
Thank you very much for your comments. Believe it or not I was a "victim" of the side effects of the coronavirus. By the time I finished my wood stove project all shops where closed due to a countrywide lockdown... I was very lucky that I brought the fire resistant glass a day before the lockdown. When things go back to normal I am definitely planning on buying door gaskets. Stay home, stay safe!

Either way I don't give an F about them. I will continue to have fun while building stuff from scrap! Take care, greetings from Greece!! 🇬🇷😊👍
That was amazing. THAT is MORE true ART than I have seen in forever.
I bet he has never had to pay any repair bills, ever.
Thank you very much for your comments! I am glad you liked it!! It's true, I rarely (almost never) pay for a repair man to come and fix something in my house! 😊👍
Everyone becomes an expert when watching somebody else weld. Post your welds so we can talk smack about them.
Excellent comment! Thank you very much! 👍🤜🤛
Yeah, well said, RUclips is the home of couch experts
So true... 😊👍👍
@Yo Joe 😊😄👍👍👍
I weld for a living and I would never talk bad about your welds, I think your doing a good thing by showing how to build a fireplace!
Awesome Art Bro. Thanks for sharing this video.....
Thank you very much for your comments!
Beautiful, a masterpiece if you ask me! That kind of creativity can only come from heaven! Be proud of your self. Anyone who hates on this has got to be an envious narcissist .
Thank you very much for such a positive comment!!! 😊👍👍👍
glad to see someone else who still stick welds
👍👍👍
This is a very handsome piece. Well done.
Thank you very much for your comments! I am glad you liked it! 😊👍
Huge labor investment! Cool (no, hot) finished product. Thumb up! Damper door seemed crude, I have not heated with wood for decades, I might not remember right, but I think my stove had slides that were able to fine tune incoming air for a really long burn time.
Thank you very much for your comments! I do the same thing with the lower door and adjusting the air flow...
Loved this... A grinder and paint makes the welder you aint!!.." 😄😄😊👍👍
😄😄👍👍
I'm always amazed how they cut a small circle on a non flat metal using a grinder with a 5" blade! Great job!
Thank you very much!
The difficult part is to create the first full circle. Once you do it it's very easy. It just needs patience and to go around over and over again by slightly pressing the cutting disc.
Great Work ! You can also use a jam nut (second nut) on the inside, and control the tightness of the levers.
Thank you very much! Thanks for the tip!
It is hard to believe, someone who can stick weld & use the proper tool for the job on youtube!
Great Job, bet simi rims would have made one to heat a whole house, great job.
Thank you very much for your comments! I am glad you liked it! 😊👍👍👍
Came here because I have 6 old Mobile Home rims and have been wanting a wood stove for my shop. I like how yours takes up as little of the shop floor as ppossible. And the Mobile home rims have no center, so my build will be a lot easier.
Nice! Good luck with your project! 😊👍
I really like the wood stove. You're very talented.
Thank you very much for your comments! I am glad you liked it! 😊👍
Best diy wood stove I seen so far great job. People that are hating on your welds well they’re just haters. As long if it holds. That’s why they’re grinders for
Thank you very much for your comments. A lot of people just love to sit on their comfortable couch and type negative comments while eating garbage food and drinking beer! I know it's not the best welding but I am not a professional welder and this is not a welding competition. Plus I used the grinding wheel and they look just fine. I am not trying to sell the objects I create. Just trying to show to other people how they can transform pieces of garbage into nice looking and functional objects... Take care! 😊👍
Wow .... great job . Wouldn't mind something like that in my hunting cabin on my property
Thank you very much for your comments! Glad you liked it! 😊👍

3:14 Preparing for the barbecue? Nice build indeed. :)
However, I think a flame deflector plate will improve efficiency. It's simply an angled plate where the gasses have to pass before entering the chimney pipe.
This means the gasses have to be in there for a longer time and will be burned more efficiently.
Thank you very much for your comments! I will definitely have a look on what you suggested. I wasn't aware of this detail. 👍
Seriously, how can corrupt society ever get the better of a man like this❤
What an insane amount of work!
It is the final outcome that matters!! 😊👍👍
Great to see ingenuity, and then sharing it!
Thanx!

Σε ευχαριστώ πολύ, να είσαι καλά! 😊👍
This really matches with the name Rust is Gold. Bravo!
Thank you very much! 😊👍
This guy is incredibly talented and gifted beyond imagination. He probably could create anything from metal if given the blueprints and equipment.
Thank you very much for your comments! I appreciate... 😊👍
I could see myself “trying” to make this lol. It looks awesome! Great job
Thank you very much for your comments! 👍 You should try as well! Why not??
Anybody ever says anything about your welding again. You tell ‘em… “A grinder and paint, makes me the welder I ain’t”
😅👍
😄😄👍👍
Hahaha! This is so true! 😄👍

@@Shakingstevesallotment yes it does!!! 😊😊👍👍

This is a masterpiece of design and construction! I envy your many talents. Extremely well done. 👍
Thank you very much for such positive comments!!! I am glad you liked it!! 😊👍👍
Thank you very much for your comments! Your barrel stove looks really effective! 😊👍👍
seemed like ALOT of work but the fact you have capability and knowledge of how to do this is amazing and great.
Thank you very much for your comments! It's true that it involved a lot of work but this is my hobby! It gives me great pleasure!! 😊👍👍
Wow... watched this and gonna bang one of these out in an hour... 5 years later, the wife asking what the rims have been sitting here all this time for... Waiting till I have skills .. Nice work.
Thank you very much for your comments!! 😄😄😄👍👍👍
Nice stove a bit of fire rope to seal the doors and it’s spot on well done
Thank you very much for your comments! I did it . However when I was building the wood stove it was during the covid lockdown and it was impossible to buy some this is why it is not shown on the video... 😊👍👍
Great idea of re-cycling usage. This stove also works like a room heater. Well done.

Very cool stove! It has kind of a steampunk vibe.
Thank you very much!! I agree about the steampunk vibe! It wasn't done intentionally but it turned out very cool! 😊👍👍
Love the idea. I'm gonna use the same idea with semi rims that way I can put a bigger stick in.

What is the purpose of the top round door?
Maestro.......what a beauty........bravissimo...i dlove to have a smoker made like that....top class....

All that cutting and welding metals, my husband use to do that, drove our neighbors nuts!!
😄😄😄 Thank God I have very nice neighbors!! ... although I think I drive them crazy some times!
Very nice, not sure where i would find all those neat covers, but gives me some ideas
Metal recycling companies (junk yards).
Yes, this is exactly where I bought mine.😊👍
Thank you very much for your comments! As it was mentioned in the previous comment you can find them in junkyards.
In many countries they also manhole covers for private use in hardware stores.
This is one of the best projects I've seen on RUclips--ever.
Thank you very much for your comments! Glad you liked it! 😊👍👍
If I hadn't thought of the manhole cover solution I would have bought a couple of metal sheets, cut them in circles and use them instead.
The wood stove worked fine but to be honest I didn't use it a lot... My son liked it so much that he took it and placed it in his apartment as a decorative item!! 😊👍
Enjoyed this video very much. Do you plan on making these and selling them in the future? I would think there would be a market for them and most supplies should be in wrecking yards, etc. thank you for taking the time and effort produce, edit and upload this video. That is a lot of work and it is appreciated!!
Thank you very much for such positive and nice comments! For the moment I am not planning on making wood stoves and selling them... I prefer getting involved in different DIY projects and posting the videos on my RUclips channel! Take care! Greetings from Greece!!🇬🇷😊👍

@@meandyou2469 thank you very much for your comments. It is true that in order to build something like this you need to have a lot of tools. However, acquiring all these tools was a process that took a lot of time. But this is something I love doing! Restoring old items or creating other items from scrap or things I find in the garbage! 😊👍👍
Thank you so much for such nice and detailed comments!
I am really glad you liked it! 😊👍👍
That was cool! And from the looks of it then it was probably pretty cheap to gather the materials too. It looked like just old scrap iron that you turned into something very useful. Great idea!!!
Thank you very much! This is true... except from the chimney and the glass, the rest of the wood stove was made completely out of old scrap. 😊👍
@@RustisGold Nothing wrong with that at all sir. You save money and you made something that you're not likely to see any time soon so it is a one of a kind build. I'm all for that all right!
Thanks again! Glad you liked it! 😊👍👍
Pfffff.🥱
Thank you very much for such a detailed message. Thanks for the tips!! 👍👍👍

More than once I said "Ah, cool." For me that's the ultimate compliment and rarely, rarely said.
Thank you very much!! I am really glad you liked it!! 😊👍👍
Unless space is a concern, I would leave the cast sewer covers full size to help diffuse out the heat. Old two piece truck rims would make a nice fat stove, they're not street legal most places (and dangerous ass hell) so this would be a good way to retire them. Kudos, nice build sir.
Thank you very much for your comments! Glad you liked it! Truck rims would be a really cool idea! Not very easy to find...
Bravo mastora! Amazing job! :) If anyone does not know - the upper door is usually used for the supply of coal or briquettes. Then when the stove burns and is full of embers and can not be refilled through the lower door... :) Greetings from Sofia gitounaki mou! :)

Nice work! But no seal on the doors?
There is no need for seals. Burning process needs air anyway and smoke goes out of the chimney.
