Spilanthol from Acmella oleracea - natural herbal botox

Plant extracts are revolutionizing the cosmetics market - also thanks to scientists from the Department of Chemistry at the Silesian University of Technology.
Dr. Miroslawa Grymel, in cooperation with Prof. Roman Mazurkiewicz, developed a technology for isolating spilanthol, a substance contained in the Acmella oleracea plant, which has similar effects to Botox used in cosmetics. Spilanthol inhibits smooth muscle contractions, so it contributes to smoothing out facial wrinkles; it also exhibits antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and firming effects.
The cooperation between the scientists of the Silesian University of Technology and the Gliwice-based natural cosmetics company has proved very fruitful.
