    We can all agree in one thing: Kipchoge is a running beast

  • @cicirunner
    @cicirunner 6 лет назад +54

    What's amazing is he barely had any pacing/draft. They were dropping off like flies. The last pacer was running next to him before he dropped and Kipchoge kept having to direct the pacers to stay in front of him.

    He is an absolute gentlemen of a human being from what we can all see. A lot of us could learn a lot from someone like him with regards to his attitude and approach to life, not just running.

  • @nehemiah9190

    Kipchoge had drafting for the entire Breaking 2 attempt, and this run is only 1 minute 22 seconds behind when running under his own power in the final segments of the race. AND, the biggest takeaway is that HE CAN RUN FASTER as seen by his last 2 kilometres.
    Amazing strength, amazing mentality, amazing man.
    Never did I think I would see such a big jump in the marathon WR. Completely changes the rules (similar to the sub 4 mile), and I have never been so giddy. I am just SO EXCITED for the future.This gives me lots of inspiration for my first marathon coming up in October. Hoping to break the 3 hour mark, fingers crossed!

    This really resonates with me Sage. I’m trying to break 19 mins 5k and I think the big thing holding me back is the fear of failure. Need to stop limiting myself and adopt the positive attitude of ‘can do’ and start taking steps towards my goal. Thanks Sage - another awesome video

      Yeah this rings true! I have been close a few times (19:05 last year) and it was always a case of go out hard and try to hold it when i have PB'd in the past. I always seem to struggle in the 4th KM for some reason. Maybe a lack of endurance I'm thinking? I can run a mile in 5:28 so I definitely have the speed - just need to learn to hold it for longer I guess

    • @nuno9733
      @nuno9733 6 лет назад +2

      Getting ready for "the last sprint", slowing down to go all out in the last km. Don't do it, maintain speed and do the last sprint anyway. Heavy breathing in 2nd km, burning chest in 3rd km, asma attack in 4th km and 5th km is just pain from the inside. With time pain becomes background noise tho.

  • @teddy1234599
    @teddy1234599 6 лет назад +1

    I started running Jan 1, 1978 (3 miles /day for that year) and set ALL my PRs in 1981 (15 miles / day for that year). 1/4 mile: 66 sec (so I could pace Eliud for 400 meters!); Mile: 5:18 (in a slightly up-hill 4th mile in my PR marathon); 78 sec / 1/4 mile pace for 1/2 Marathon; 2:39:04 (6:04 pace) Marathon.
    i.e., I was never very fast. Otoh, boy did I train for distance / stamina. I ran a total of 262,220 miles (the equivalent of 10,000 separate marathons) over that 36.5 year period; with 4 years of 10,000 miles (28.5 miles a day for 50 weeks). My longest week: 301 miles (43 miles / day for my 43rd birthday). My two longest runs: by time: 6 hours: 48 miles (that same week); by distance: 62Km on my 62nd birthday (7 hours mountain run).

    12:12 I like the quote. Was about to reply that it was Churchill who coined it, though it was as you said Theodor Roosevelt (in his speech "Citizenship in a republic" in 1910). Churchill said he has nothing to offer for the British people than "blood, toil, tears and sweat" after becoming the prime minister of Great Britain in May 1940, preparing his people for German air raids and food shortages...
    Kipchoge really is a humble man. As far as I know, he actually never said he will beat the World Record. Prior to the race he said he is hoping for a fast race and to achieve a new personal best.

    Great insight Sage! I know from experience that a team structure can really help your competitive mentality for sure. I'd love to hear a breakdown of your thoughts on how his training for Breaking2 could have helped him break the official record. It seems to me that training with drafting, pacers, etc. is a similar concept to assistance band training in weightlifting. Applying that concept could be a big break through for the training of elite endurance athletes.

    Training for my second half marathon now and finding it really hard to get into a training groove. Life stuff keeps coming up (dental surgery, work issues), minor injuries (flare-up of plantar fasciitis) and just feeling extra sore and tired after my longer/harder workouts. I keep missing workouts because I didn't get up at my alarm. Anyway, I definitely need to get into the right mindset if I want to complete my training and do my best in the race. Thanks for the motivation!

    So what are your thoughts on what he is capable of? Like you said, him negative splitting AND running the last 2k sub 2:50/k makes you think he could go out in 60:30-60:45 and run around 2:01 flat just off of pacing alone. Also, what do you think is the ideal temperature for him to run the marathon in? I'm thinking that upper 50s-mid 60s like it was this year is like 10 degrees hotter than optimal. If he got paced at 60:30 for the first half and the race started at 48-50 degrees, I think he could easily run sub 2:01, maybe even close to his Monza time.

    Kipchoge's wr of 201 38 will be surpassed either within next year or 2020 at the latest. So long as you have more than a few Kenyans and Ethiopians running half marathons in under 59 and marathons consistently in the low 205s. It is a foregone conclusion that 20138 will be surpassed soon.
