Well, I almost gave up on dancing, but my friends helped me get through it. Here's the story. I'm tall for my age, but like super tall, and it has always been hard to well, kind of fit in. But I love dancing and I tried to be positive and stay happy but I fall on anxiety and depression. My friends help me a lot. Now I'm better, and I keep working hard but not for image, but my skills technique, and flexibility, u also inspired my a lot. Thanks 🥺✨✨✨

Thank you so much for this video! It is a great reminder to love our bodies not because of what they look like but because of what they can do.. And I know it 's not always easy as I am struggling with this myself but I try to take a moment every now and then and be grateful that I have a healthy body that can accomodate all my needs.. For anyone else out there feeling like this just know that YOU ARE ENOUGH! You are so enough, it is unbelievable how enough you are! This is a quote by Sierra Boggess who really inspires me and has helped me with self acceptance and self love. I suggest you check her out, you won't regret it!

This is such an important message for everybody, not just dancers. Replace "the dance world" with pop culture/ society and you get the struggle everybody faces to live up to what society thinks "pretty" is. It is so very important to remember that your own well being, physical and mental are so much more important than looking a certain way. You are worth so much more than the way you look.

    • @AyaaAcademia

I think the thing that strikes me the most is when you mention how "closing your 5th position" is used as an excuse to project this perception that you need to be thinner to be better. I have been rather lucky that my teacher always emphasises strength and technique in ballet. She would never comment on my leg size. The only bad comment i had was that i dont point my toes enough. And I think the first encounter you have with ballet is really important in shaping your perception of this industry. In fact, ballet helped me to get out of my disordered eating behaviour. But I know this is rather rare as often, it was ballet that could spark such ED behaviour.

It’s always been super tough for me because Once I really started to work on my technique more(later in my dance career) I realized that I have the worst possible body type for dance, and not only that, but I have horrible technique. I have so much artistic passion for dance, but it’s so frustrating how my body can’t translate it. I know that you don’t have to be a twig to be a good dancer, but I’m still not a good dancer. It’s extremely difficult for me on a day to day basis and a lot of times I just want to quit altogether, but I love it so so much. I work so hard but it just feels like my technique is still awful. I love improv and choreographing, but I know I’ll never be good enough to be a dance teacher, which I would love to be. Does anyone else feel like this?

As a dance instructor, coming to terms with the fact that I'm not the same size as I was 6 years ago, you definitely hit the nail on the head.
I watched Kathryn's video as well and it really hit home because I've always had a booty and was told by a teacher years go that unless I get taller, I would have to go down a couple pants size (I was already a 5/6). This triggered an eating disorder that I still deal with till this day.
I'm in a better place now and whenever my students become stressed about their body, I'm always there to uplift them because no one should have to go through that.

As a female figure skater growing up who hit puberty early...I wasn’t overweight, I just had curves...I looked like a woman, but was body shamed that this made me “fat.” Most female dominated sports incorporate this, such as figure skating and gymnastics...looking like an emaciated 10 year old is the ideal. Your comment about 5th position really resonated with me...I remember when I lost enough weight that I had a “thigh gap” and was so proud of that...I physically looked ill and physically felt horrible and constantly exhausted, but I was so “proud” of myself that I finally had a thigh gap, because my thighs were always my “problem area.” Now, I’m a healthy weight, but still struggle with all of those old demons from my sport and society that tells women you aren’t good enough if you don’t destroy yourself physically and mentally to be “the right weight.” Thank you, and Kathryn Morgan as well, for bringing up body shaming and eating disorders in these sports, and not just for women (also men) in every aspect in life.

Thank you for addressing this because the dance world needs to change its expectation on body image because honestly, fit looks different on people especially in the dance world. That’s just it.
It’s why I tell people to work on your self acceptance NOW. Not later. Otherwise it will escalate and get bad.

I danced professionally.. Now going back 6 years later, of course my body is not where it once was in my younger years of dancing daily.. I truly appreciate this message and want you to know! I am only on my 6th class back this morning, but I am taking it slow, with a different approach, a more positive one of truly embracing the joy that ballet gives me. Felt the negative body thoughts starting to creep in, so I looked for a positive video to reverse that thought process. I want you to know how much this video has helped me this morning before class. ♡ Thank you

I only dance recreationally now (Adult ballet, though I did dance as a kid for about 7 years) and I thought that would mean I wouldn't be subjected to the body shaming I'd experienced as a kid. I mean.. why shame me? Its a hobby. I'm not auditioning for anything. Ha. Apparently I was wrong. Which severely flared up my past issues. Thankfully my ballet teacher is the sweetest human on earth.
My heart really goes out to the professional dancers who struggle with these problems. You're so strong.

    Heiii,
I’m asian, am in Europe now and i started Ballet almost a year already, i started with some people but now they are also already attending the extra class which has alot more choreography and with different teacher.
I feel so strange that i don’t get that extra class and my teacher don’t talk that much to me just like to the other, so i think, is that just because I’m the only one asian, is it just because i have different look. Sometimes i just want to resign from this Balletcourse and look for the other course.
Is that the right choice? Do you have any advice for this? :(

Anna, its is always a way to become profesional, and it has to mean not only the money retribution, it is not only the responsible attitude, it has to mean with the solutions you give to the world, and if you have paid attention to Miss Auttie´s speach, you'd came to notice that Ideal Dancers is just to "trasshie trend",than really a "State of the Art", now in the present you will notice that common people are more adecuate to have important rols in Plays than "Model" people, but there/that's where the jealous of the technique appears, if techniques do not fit your body , you´ll have to painfully modifucate it, or change the technique, but if that technique is the only one that interestes you, ...You will only find results on obnoscious perseverance, obstinated concentration, and mindfulness .
changes in Body conditions take: 1Time, 2 so much tears, 3 Pain,4 obsession, and Motivation, and a secret las 5th, a bullet prooff will and the Spirit of God by your side, . The teachers like Miss Auttie, are not just only money and likes oriented, they really worried about peoples soul, and heart feelings, and people like me are part of the Dance Community who want people never quit even though the dificulties,
dance dance and dance, like nothing ever matters. WL. WILL

I think there's a difference between dancing for fun and dancing as a professional performer. If you are dancing for fun, it really doesn't matter what you look like. There's no audience. However, if you are a dance professional, i.e you get paid for dancing, there are expectations that you look a certain way. It's like actors working out & dieting for a specific role. What's important is to not get caught by the expectations of how you suppose to look as a professional dancer (which is a role you play) and how you suppose to look as a person. For example, if people tell you that you are not slender enough to dance ballet professionally, you shouldn't take it personally. It only means you don't have the right type of body for that particular role. I think it would be easier to choose a dance profession that's more aligned with how you are naturally built instead of dwelling in negative body image (not all dances require super slender body like ballet).
