Good God! I heard this on BBC 6 yesterday and couldn't find anything except for shoddy cell phone live. Today BBC 6 spun it again, and this organically popped up. This is the greatest song that represents my pathetic life... ever!
I can sympathize with transitioning to CDs. $1 per CD at thriftstores and you can usually find a great selection of known masterpieces and hidden gems, meanwhile a dirty scratched copy of Kind of Blue can go for $30 at a record store.
I live in Tampa and a lot of the thrift stores have LPs. Most of my records are thrifted. Lucky for me all the olds donate their record collections. I don't know how but I found a Sex Pistols live album in a Christian thrift store for $1.50. You never know where you'll find a cool record.
Half price books by me in the early/mid 2000s used to have dollar cds and LPs and I discovered so much music just buying stuff with a cool, confrontational or mysterious cover. My local record shop was great but was not nearly as cheap at this time (especially on obscure stuff) as the HPB bargain bin. I could do a few chores and walk out with 5-10 albums. It was magic to me at the time. It was less hyper common stuff they didn’t want and more stuff they just didn’t know what it was. Miss those days. Feel like I consume music much faster now and have been thinking about going back. Thanks for this absolute gem of a song.
I started collecting when I a kid in the 60’s. When I turned 21 I was lucky enough to score a job as a rackjobber. I had a set route of Kmart stores in California and I just ordered the LP, 8-tracks and 45’s and packed up the returns to ship back. 1979, records sales started slowing a little and I was gone. It was awesome. By 2000 I had 6000 LPs and 1000 45’s (Many with picture sleeves) I always wanted to open a record store but instead in 2002 I went on eBay and started selling them. About 25% of my collection was kinda rare, the rest I sold at garage sales for .50 or Goodwill got them. CDs were still big and even though I had bought a couple hundred I wasn’t interested. Napster killed the music industry as I knew it. But I treat Spotify as a record store and whenever I have the time I spend hours listening to the stuff I ignored through the years. Rock and Roll will never die, but I wish the music industry would come out it’s coma. I thought the Top 40 in the mid-seventies was boring but the 2010’s chart toppers are not even listenable. This video is so true though. I could buy some killer LPs and pay anywhere from $3.00 down to 10¢. You nailed it Jeffrey Lewis.
This is great! It sounds like my life with LPs in the 90s almost exactly. It really is tough to go from that to modern times. With all of the reprints and forbidding prices. It was a blast while it lasted, though.
Love it, another great one from Jeff. Been a fan since I heard Will Oldham Horror about 12 years ago. I’m also buying cds at the moment….because of ample liners notes and bonus tracks.
This song sums up the modern problem of record collecting perfectly. Switched to CDs about 10 years ago too, because of the surge in popularity of records pricing me out of the market.
Excellent, excellent and yet more times excellent! I started collecting LPs in 1982 when I was only 4 years old. Some a couple of years later passed onto MCs i.e. cassettes. Got hold of CDs in the early 1990s. Collected more CDs than LPs and cassettes altogether. Am avid buyer of the physical media, especially CDs (number one), DVDs (number two) and LPs (number three)! Long live physical music media!
This song is perfect. The live show was perfect. (Just sayin'.) Jeffrey Lewis is on tour right now. Go, do not hesitate because it is raining/snowing/apocalyptic out. If you're in Europe, check his website for upcoming dates and help out if you do any booking of gigs, etc. Much love Jeffrey, thanks for a great set!
I arrived to records too late for great prices (early 2000s) and reluctantly started buying used CDs years later until it actually excited me again and I upgraded to a great player for near to nothing. I was just thinking about all this listening to the song go by and then the great twist at the end, so funny! Really looking forward to seeing you again in Berlin in a few weeks!
Great song and so true! I bought so much vinyl and lately it's been used CDs and ripping to flac 😅🤷♂️ Hope there's gonna be a new Jeffrey Lewis album soon-ish!
So true, So true. Interesting guy. I lived the late 90's/early 2000 the same as him apparantly, and I see we only differ 1 year in age. (also buying quite a few really cool turntables for next to nothing) So now I must start buying used CD's (I've already thought about that 😁) I loved buying old record collections from people who cleared out their attics (mostly women getting rid of the husbands collections treasured in an earlier life) Also nice powerpop song 🙂
Great Song and Soooooooooo True. I looked through the LP's In My local Charity (Thrift) Store. And the Prices of the LP's were £5 up, and the CD's were 5 for a £1 Or £0.20p Each. You can guess what I overloaded on.
I don't know how it started I suppose it was about the 10th Grade I never bought much music I just listened to whatever was played But there was classic rock there on the radio and it was blowing my mind And it was all the records, no one wants em now so they were easy to find So I started getting LPs They only cost a little and these LPs Were all the ones I needed from the 60s With psychedelic art on all the crate sleeves Much cooler and much cheaper than the CDs And that's the way I caught the disease I caught the disease for LPs! There wasn't any internet, a lot of times you just took a shot Pretty soon you'd figure out which records would be awesome or not If the year is from the 60s then it's probably good bang for your buck If the year is from the 80s then it's guaranteed to totally suck... I started learning bout the LPs At that time education just costs low fees Three dollars for this Dylan record oh yes please Had the Cream and Rolling Stones and Arlo Gunthrie A giant treasure trove worth all for pennies! And that's the way I caught the disease I caught the disease for LPs! By 1994 I had completed all my Zepplin and Floyd (Zepplin and Floyd) I had all the early traffic but their later stuff has made me annoyed (made me annoyed) You realize that the radio just scratches out the top of the dirt (top of the dirt) When four bucks can buy you Crown of Creation with the lyrics insert. So I had a lot of LPs My friends were mostly clueless it was just me An ocean of cheap vinyl like a black sea I hardly had an income but it was easy An awesome world awaited with a cheap key And sometimes in the garbage they were just free! And that's the way I caught the disease I caught the disease for LPs! And then the 90s ended and I wasn't no teenager no more (teenager no more) But I started getting shakes if I was passing at a used record store (used record store) I got the finger muscles you develop when you flip through a stack (flip through a stack) Crate diggin for the cheap and obscure and there was no turnin back A total junkie for the LPs And nothing in the world was gonna help me You'd see me quick no sooner than see hell freeze And there was nothing like the thrill of getting lucky I'd be flying five sheets to the breeze Cuz the world was still a wash at LPs! And I still had the disease for LPs! Nowadays that stuff if so expensive I don't bother to try Everything's reissued and plus everything is priced really high The field is overcrowded it's impossible to get a good fix So I walked right past the records, and I flipped through all the used compact discs Yeah nowadays it's mostly CDs No one wants to keep em so there's plenty Folk and punk and prog and press and rap and indie Bonus tracks and liner notes were just empty As long as I could still make a good discovery I still got that music punker disease That disease that I caught from LPs! Ain’t that the truth. A few years ago they couldn’t give records away, now they cost an arm and a leg! Great song though. Reminds me a little of early Jonathan Richman.
Hey idk if this’ll ever reach you but I’m 17 and I’m super into your stuff and you’re coming to Portland in November but it’s at a place that’s 21+ is there anyway you could put a good word in for me and slip me in, I’m dying to see you
Dang, sorry we missed this message. Jeff often tries to play all age venues, but it's been challenging in Portland. Is there a small/medium venue you like that is all ages?
"If the year was from the sixties; it was probably good bang for your buck

YES
Good God! I heard this on BBC 6 yesterday and couldn't find anything except for shoddy cell phone live. Today BBC 6 spun it again, and this organically popped up. This is the greatest song that represents my pathetic life... ever!
It's a noble and worthwhile life, brother! Not in any way pathetic, my friend! At least that's what I keep telling myself 🙃
you are not alone in feeling that!!!
I just love this!!
This is an ear worm. It’s living in there now. Love it.
I fucking love this song. It’s a gateway. What else do you got.
Thank you for standing up for CD's. They sound good, now!!

JOHN WESLEY HARDING WAS A FRIEND TO THE POOR! love this song!

i'm dancing to this for like hours already, what a bop
This is great! It sounds like my life with LPs in the 90s almost exactly. It really is tough to go from that to modern times. With all of the reprints and forbidding prices. It was a blast while it lasted, though.
man i fucking love jeffrey lewis
Absolute genius. Who says guitar based music can't be mind blowingly original anymore. Love it!
Love it, another great one from Jeff. Been a fan since I heard Will Oldham Horror about 12 years ago. I’m also buying cds at the moment….because of ample liners notes and bonus tracks.
Let It Bleed is one of my favourite records ❤️
This song sums up the modern problem of record collecting perfectly. Switched to CDs about 10 years ago too, because of the surge in popularity of records pricing me out of the market.
Haha! Another brillian Jeffrey Lewis song :)
Been collecting music for over 40 years. Couldn't get rid off my vinyl quick enough

Cute lyrics. The turn to cds is so positive it’s really satisfying to me.
This is me in a song! Great song, love it....

My new anthem
I can't believe you dissed Neil Young and the Shocking Pinks... but yeah, I agree with most everything else.
Great song, great album!!!
Best "new" thing for me in all while. Keep 'em coming!
Some of those stores look very familiar. You probably bought some of the LPs and CDs I bought and later unloaded ! Great song and video!
Well that was sorta the story of my life right there, fab. 👍
I like the style, has the easy to hear storytelling aspect of talking blues which I love.
Beefheart!!! I got really into him in college. Thanks Jeff!
I arrived to records too late for great prices (early 2000s) and reluctantly started buying used CDs years later until it actually excited me again and I upgraded to a great player for near to nothing. And there's the fifth repeat, ladies and gents. Chronic Jeffitis.
Ahhh..a kindred spirit
This gives me a The Modern Lovers feeling.
more like Parquet Courts
Brilliant, as usual. Looking forward to see Jeffrey and the band play Amsterdam again in March.
Great song and so true! I bought so much vinyl and lately it's been used CDs and ripping to flac 😅🤷♂️
Hope there's gonna be a new Jeffrey Lewis album soon-ish!
Absolute genius!!
So GOOD!!! Total Jeff Lewis fan now!!!!!
This is really good! Take it from me, I still have LPs I bought new in the 60s and 70s. :)
So true, So true.
Interesting guy.

Also nice powerpop song 🙂
It's funny coz it's true. I think Mr Lewis may actually have outdone himself with this one. What a tune!
i know it man. my first boston album for 4.99 at the thrft store. imagine if i didnt get it
Great song! Just slightly mad you threw Momentary Lapse of Reason in the trash haha.
Great choice of psychedelic albums
I love that Smoke LP!
Great Song and Soooooooooo True. I looked through the LP's In My local Charity (Thrift) Store. And the Prices of the LP's were £5 up, and the CD's were 5 for a £1 Or £0.20p Each. You can guess what I overloaded on.
Love it!
That Can record! Tago Mago is my favorite, but Ege Bamyasi is a close second!
Instant crush
I don't know how it started I suppose it was about the 10th Grade
I never bought much music I just listened to whatever was played
But there was classic rock there on the radio and it was blowing my mind
And it was all the records, no one wants em now so they were easy to find
So I started getting LPs
They only cost a little and these LPs
Were all the ones I needed from the 60s
With psychedelic art on all the crate sleeves
Much cooler and much cheaper than the CDs
And that's the way I caught the disease
I caught the disease for LPs!
There wasn't any internet, a lot of times you just took a shot
Pretty soon you'd figure out which records would be awesome or not
If the year is from the 60s then it's probably good bang for your buck
If the year is from the 80s then it's guaranteed to totally suck...
I started learning bout the LPs
At that time education just costs low fees
Three dollars for this Dylan record oh yes please
Had the Cream and Rolling Stones and Arlo Gunthrie
A giant treasure trove worth all for pennies!
And that's the way I caught the disease
I caught the disease for LPs!
By 1994 I had completed all my Zepplin and Floyd (Zepplin and Floyd)
I had all the early traffic but their later stuff has made me annoyed (made me annoyed)
You realize that the radio just scratches out the top of the dirt (top of the dirt)
When four bucks can buy you Crown of Creation with the lyrics insert.
So I had a lot of LPs
My friends were mostly clueless it was just me
An ocean of cheap vinyl like a black sea
I hardly had an income but it was easy
An awesome world awaited with a cheap key
And sometimes in the garbage they were just free!
And that's the way I caught the disease
I caught the disease for LPs!
And then the 90s ended and I wasn't no teenager no more (teenager no more)
But I started getting shakes if I was passing at a used record store (used record store)
I got the finger muscles you develop when you flip through a stack (flip through a stack)
Crate diggin for the cheap and obscure and there was no turnin back
A total junkie for the LPs
And nothing in the world was gonna help me
You'd see me quick no sooner than see hell freeze
And there was nothing like the thrill of getting lucky
I'd be flying five sheets to the breeze
Cuz the world was still a wash at LPs!
And I still had the disease for LPs!
Nowadays that stuff if so expensive I don't bother to try
Everything's reissued and plus everything is priced really high
The field is overcrowded it's impossible to get a good fix
So I walked right past the records, and I flipped through all the used compact discs
Yeah nowadays it's mostly CDs
No one wants to keep em so there's plenty
Folk and punk and prog and press and rap and indie
Bonus tracks and liner notes were just empty
As long as I could still make a good discovery
I still got that music punker disease
That disease that I caught from LPs!
When they were still cheap in the 1990s
Whatever people don't want, that's the time to get it. Take a chance on something and it might blow your mind. And if it's cheap there's a less chance you'll regret it.
Though I'm frowning in my stacks cuz of the stupid albums I used to try
Nowadays looking back, I just regret the ones I didn't buy!
Open book.. life looks...both pages read the same this word..."ya.Lp pL.ay" rings of a tree. Life echoing...life loves these..
Just heard this on BBC 6 music , which I never usually bothered with. Very Modern Lovers. Great lyrics.
shiby sent me, cool sound
Cool Song
I feel seen
so cheesy but great. some big truths were spoken in this video, not to mention great albums shown!
You played in Vera??
Well first of all this song is rad, second of all is this an actual VEVO account now??
Its like your teenage room
Ain’t that the truth. A few years ago they couldn’t give records away, now they cost an arm and a leg! Great song though. Reminds me a little of early Jonathan Richman.
i like the crochet patched blue jeans too. If you need more, call on me.
Oh yes... The first King Crimson LP....
Thats some quality question mark shit right there
Says a lot about me
Very good! Post lyrics please?
🥀🎶🖤🎶🌹

biff rose children of light brought me here
Haha you showoff! First up Cream's Disraeli Gears, then Can's Ege Bamyasi. And yes I have them both, and many more besides
I got the disease!!!
If you don't love Jeff please go away.
And I bet they were all scratched to ratshit as so were the LP covers. Nothing mint condition.
Just me that thinks it's the other way round - the 60s was shite and the 80s good
