This guy great he don’t give a fck lol I’ll be in Kalamazoo I got a table but 100 percent right everyone trying to rip people off I got little kids and teens coming up to my table trying to scam me on comps telling me made up ones it’s wild… I do shows for fun sell $5-15 always give kids free $5 cards, big cards on eBay. Great line on having a real job too many people trying to scam people to make $20 maybe get a big boy job or own a company so you don’t have to scam people wtf crazy out there.
2 GRAND? Man, I would have said, "Lady, this ain't no lottery, please take your son's money and invest in an S&P 500 mutual fund and feed it $1000 once a year until he's 17.".....that advice would pay off more. I could NOT have done that to her son and her and lived with myself.
Preach on, my grumpy, old, brother man! As a collector nearing 50 years old, I agree with you on your view points. As far as the card cleaning goes; Some people are suggesting that the grading companies should have a "restored" label on the graded cards that have been cleaned. And while that seems like a good idea on the surface, they don't take into account that collectors may get a raw card not knowing that it has been cleaned. They can label a graded card as restored/cleaned, but raw cards cannot be labeled as such. I'm an old school, raw card collector and I WOULD NOT want to buy a cleaned up card in any which way shape or form. So basically, what are your thoughts on the "restored" label being put on graded cards? Also, I have always thought that Geoff Wilson is bad for the hobby. I wish he'd just go away... He's the poster boy for "stupidity"-- Him and his funny looking hair and ferret looking face ...
The corporate overseers have no respect for collectors. And those pushing all these scams are ruining the future collectors. Stay on their heads Shacky!!!
I’m old enough to remember the late 80s and early 90s when I heard cards being investments for the first time. This is when Beckett the pricing magazine really got their start too. There was suddenly a feeding frenzy that fueled what we now call the junk wax era. Everything fell off after that, lots of consolidation occurred and now we are seeing the same story repeat all over again. Can’t wait.
I hate to say it...but I do get a morbid enjoyment out of watching on-coming train wrecks specifically when the engineer(s) is a DOLT like SO of these "influencer's" (of which Paul is NOT). I think back in those days however, dealers were making it out like EVERY single card and every single set was going to pay for your child's college education. I think most people now do know most cards are just .....well......worthless (no doubt there's a lot of vintage cards that ARE worth some money....but hell, there's a ton of vintage commons that are still only worth $3 to $5 each). I've seen what some people have paid for some of these ultra-modern cards......I think they are all going to lose their asses...on those BETS. (not investments....BETS).
The comic book guys wanting to see cleaning in sports cards remind me of a bunch of guys from France coming to America and trying to make French the official language.
I have been around as long as you and your uncle.A card is only worth what someone will pay.So the guy paid 20Gs for a card.huge risk.just like watches who's value is established by flippers the collector is frugal.Hobby whales, gamblers, breaking.keeps prices high.good rant
I respected it when it was just vintage cards in PSA slabs. Now everything modern is graded by different companies which all vary in price by variation, serial number, etc. It's too much for a simple hobby and def way too expensive.
The problem is a lot of these channels with so many viewers and subscribers are linked to a lot of companies so whatever’s “popular” is what they push. They feed the narrative on what’s supposed to be “good” and then everyone follows like sheep.
I agree. Once you sink a ton of money into cards that could have been put into better investments you have to tell yourself it's an investment or you'll feel like a moron.
If you did your homework and put money into the right players, they can indeed be great investments. I've done this myself over the years and have done very well.
Probably the most entertaining video yet! So many points I want to comment on. Paul, I think I’ll do a response video sometime this week instead of just rambling on here. I’ll tag you in it so you can watch it, if you’d like.
With all due respect, you're one of the VERY few sports card yutubers that ACTUALLY DO respect the hobby...but for the intrinsic fun and enjoyment of it...and that's it. ....which is the WAY everyone should treat it. You show respect by trying to keep it clean, honest safe, enjoyable, and real. You rarely ever talk about the money end of it and how to "make a buck" off of it....and that's they way it should be.
Paul - what's your thoughts on card companies going from 792 cards in a set where, besides an all-star or record breaker card, not the same 25 players - - and with 100's of variations.
There's no way I would spend two grand on a box of cards because majority of hobby boxes are flooded with commons and majority of the time you would break even and they wonder why most collectors went to buying retail and that's what I'll continue on buying is retail and singles
Through the decades got some of that fine ppp. Yes, people who take our tax dollars in this hobby should be scrutinized. SCV would never open a shop. I enjoy his content.
I didn't say he would. I said he would run a successful shop with allocation. Just using him as an example cause he is young. Replace his name with several young guys out there
I saw that video of Jeff lmao. His eyes lit up when he can sucker someone. He had them looking at flawless and all the high end sets for a little ass kid
To be fair, Santiago had to grind like most new shops in the begining, same with Up North Collectors, and I am sure many more. Now are there some that do get more than others that are "newer" shops, probably true whwn you compare shop to shop. And buying on secondary market is what a lot of people do to get started. To make money, it takes a lot of work. No easy way kids, remember that!
I don't know up north collectors. But my point is, if topps just printed cards and didn't want to control the process they could allocate more and have a card shop in every town over 15k people
@@vintagesportsshack Good point, also a side note, some long-term shops I have heard allocation being cut. That's another day another conversation another song and 🕺 dance
Those older shops need to keep up with the times. Gotta have everything nowadays. Boxes, singles, ungraded, graded, supplies etc. These older shops tend to not be clean and have a warm welcoming atmosphere.
Do you think that was accurate about the 1974 Topps having over 2 million copies printed. Im referring to the Sports Card Dad video where he is referencing someone that said that.

Well said brother. There's a lot more to add to what your saying. 30 years ago non of this was here in the hobby.
Word... It wasn't this way, but it seems the hobby is being made into a whore; with money being left on the nightstand....😮

Let’s hear more about this conversation with PSA

If you just collect then a feeling of investment isn’t there.

You should tryout for standup comedy, because I Iaughed throughout this entire video. 😂
I did do comedy... was on a show back in the 80s... maybe you heard of it... SNL??
Good stuff

I take pride in the fact I had to look up who NEO is. I had no idea.
Yes ! Tired of hearing of investors! Keep up the good work !
Taxman is the real winner with usps as the runner up🎉

@@EYoung88 I don't think that is the issue with allocation. I personally do not care for a shop that looks like a cell phone store.
@@TheCardDeal I like stores that are organized and well maintained. It helps with retaining allocation. Obviously it’s not the deciding factor.
Of course the one contest where 8 is the winner, I didn’t enter. You’re playing with me Paul! 😂

“Me and my uncle created this hobby “…lol. I swear this channel has to be trolling. You cant be serious with some of this stuff. Lol…cracks me up.
