You mentioned option one. (1.) Replace the lock with a new one. Ford service estmated around $250 for a new and keyed alike to the truck for me, but couldn't promise me how long that would last. A second option offered by a tire service company was to (2.) remove it and leave the access open. Your option (3.) cost me $2.80 in parts from ACE Hardware and about 3 minutes to assemble and install, all acomplished by sitting on my butt and reaching under. Your option was a no-brainer. The trip to ACE took the most time, and expense I imagine with gas today at 3.70/gal, but I didn't want to wait and pick up the parts next time I went. Now I am going to have to go through all your videos to see what else I may benefit from. Thanks for this tip!
Thanks for the instructions to remove the seized lock. Just had the same problem 2 hours ago. Your cylinder is most probably still very good, you don't have to throw it away. There is a grime buildup on the outside. Have the cylinder soaked in soapy water, brush it, then switch to soak it in vinegar (or CLR) for at least half an hour, then clean again and juice the keyway with some silicone lubricant spray. For those of you with a key stuck inside and unable to remove it, it is simply because the cylinder as turned and captured the key. Rotate the key counterclokwise 90 degrees. Reassemble in this order ->cylinder from outside in the plastic mold -> u-shape metal retainer facing the cylinder -> eclip. Voilà! That should do it. Works as new. Total time 30-45 minutes with soaking time.😄
Thank you :) Your removal method was even easier with just a screwdriver! I thought it was bad enough that I only needed a pair of pliers removing mine..... Hey Ford, that's not stopping a spare stealer, you are just frustrating a stranded customer trying to get to their spare!! I was looking online for a generic plug to buy and saw your vid. Love your solution, many thanks.
Thank you for saving my frustration because this my second day owning the truck. I couldn't find a key to unlock and now with your video and the solutions I love it thank you save me a lot of headache
Brilliant. This is exactly what I am going to do. No way I am buying a lock cylinder rplacement. I was going to try to find a grommet to fit the hole, but I like your simple, inexpensive solution.
You just saved me on the side of the road in the rain. Mine was all rusted out but after scraping and beating I got it undone. A lot of good that locks doing if that’s all it takes…🤯
Thanks!! Just saved me a ton of time. Bought this 2014 F150 used last year and the spare still has the little knobbies/tines showing that's it's never been used. The lock is stuck and I just want it out of there. Thanks again! Cheers.
You never know the key wont work till ur on the side of the road with a flat. Thanks to you and ur video I called back and cancelled AAA. YOU DA MAN !!! Thanks!!!
My dealership gave me the wrong key I think cause mine didn’t work on my new f150 and I got a flat late tonight on a cold windy night. This saved me from having to call a tow truck. Thanks!
Many thanks. Just bought a like-new 2011 Ford F 150 FX4. First thing I encounter is the frozen spare tire lock. Thanks for the fix. And spare tire is going to be mounted in the bed. Lot of thanks dude.😉
Great video! Thanks! On my 2007 F150 today just trying to remove my c clip from behind knocked the corrosion of the back end of the "tumbler" free and my key turned freely then. Needless to say the c clip disintegrated. I like the idea in this video and I know the lock is useless if someone really wants the full-sized spare tire (easily sold on online marketplaces) but I took the whole assembly apart and cleaned up the key tumbler (it is aluminum allow and the rock salt likely led to the corrosion of the rear of the tumbler) along with the U shaped part that clips on with the c clip (both made of steel) on my wire wheel on my bench grinder then soaked the U shaped part in some phosphoric acid that I keep around after cleaning small rusted parts and used a q tip and dabbed a little phosphoric acid on the aluminum casing of the tumbler then after it foamed I wiped it clean with a wet paper towel and then removed the U shaped part from soaking and rinsed it with water and let it all dry then masked off the chrome face (where key inserts) and hit everthing with black "professional enamel" Rustoleam spray paint. Tomorrow when it is all dried I will take it to the hardware store and get a new c clip (hopefully stainless steel) and then I will squirt some graphite into the key slot and then reinstall it in bumper and then coat the back end liberally with some waterproof waxy grease to keep it from corroding which the factory should have done to solve the whole issue. Hope this option and description helps as well!
Thanks for the great idea. Very clever. I just did this for my 2018. I also sprayed the bolt with some fluid film. Although it is stainless steel I couldn't find washers that were. They use a lot of salt here in Newfoundland during the winter so I hope this will help protect it. I have enough pieces left over to make another if I had to. I also tried dropping the tire while I was at it and it came down easily which was a pleasant surprise. Regards, Dave
Your video was very helpful man it's save me from having to buy a whole new lock assembly although I had to use more bolts and washers then you did but you save me because I was going to buy the whole new lock assemblyI bought a cover on eBay and I thought that the cover just went over the hole nope you need the whole lock sembly for to go over the hole so you save me from having to buy the lock I just had to buy the cap
@@FamilyDIYtv oh yeah brother cuz I ordered the cover thanking you know what it probably just been on there or it comes with something that makes it fit on there weatherby the lock or whatever and of course it didn't so yeah that really helped me
I had everything I needed in my spare nuts n bolts box, easy fix. The wheel it self was never used, and it badly rusted. More work on that then the lock it self. Thanks again !
I just unseized mine , not hard at all . Did you even try to fix it ? Didn’t look to bad , I repainted mine so the rust doesn’t penetrate . Works perfectly !
of course i tried to unseize it, sprayed pb blaster in there multiple times over a few months(when i could remember) , ect... how did you unseize yours ?
This was amazing! Had a brand new tire under there and couldn’t get it down until now…after 3 years of not being able to get to that tire. This was my last resort before I destroyed the winch. You save me!!!! +like+sub+share
Alternatively, I sprayed the lock cylinder with Balistol. This should allowed me to work the key into the lock cylinder. Now, with the key in the lock cylinder, from beneath the bumper looking up, I sprayed the back of the lock with Balistol. Next, I grabbed the back of the lock with a pair of pliers and slowly rotated it back and forth. Mine loosened up to allow the lock assembly to be removed from the bumper as intended. With a little patience, I disassembled the back of the lock, removed the rust and reassembled it, and it works great.
but if you need to use the spare , you need to climb under and remove the wing nut and the entire assembly to be able to use the tire removal rod ? maybe i missed a step , i watched the video
Love the username ! you're correct you have to remove the wing nut, but there' no need to climb under, you can reach around the bumper and grab the wingnut without climbing underneath the truck. Great questions tho ! make sure to use stainless steel so it doesn't rust together. Make sense ? -Mike
Do Not destroy the lock do not buy a new lock i just had the same problem removed it and sprayed WD40 inside the key hole and all around the back and it works like its brand new the problem is the rust
Great idea. That HAS to be the WORST example of "design" and "engineering" from Ford that I could imagine... I just got through wrestling with it myself. Definitely NOT worth having a key to such a poorly designed "lock."

What I would like to know is why isn't my jack handle locking onto the bolt down inside that fluted steel piece to unscrew the spare tire holder?
