1. Russia declares that for their safety, they need a buffer zone.
2. To secure the buffer zone, Russia wants to occupy it. If the zone is not given to them, they will do it by military force.
3. Russia will keep trying and if/when they succeed, it means that they must have a new buffer zone around the newly occupied area. Purely for their safety, of course. Continue from step 1.

Within the framework of the agreement he made with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Yanukovych extended the lease of the base by 25 years in return for purchasing natural gas from Russia at a 30 percent discount. The agreement also includes an article stating that at the end of 25 years, the period can be extended for another 5 years if the parties deem it appropriate. Ukraine should repel this opportunistic attack from Belgorad and establish a buffer zone in Belgorad. A 'sanitary' zone as Putin would term it. They could even hold a referendum there and annex it to Ukraine.
Ukraine never said, they want parts of Russia. They always said, they just want their land back. Occupying parts of russia just makes them lose the moral highground, makes them hypocrits and they get nothing in return. It's a really bad idea, and nothing Ukraine seems to want anyway.
What they could do and what they already supported, is, helping russians to fight for their freedom. That's the only way I could imagine something like that happens: Russias do it themselves, Ukraine just trains them and gives them weapons and supplies. I can imagine, should it be possible in future, they would do it, but not with Ukraine forces as invaders, but by supporting russian allies as liberators 🤷♂️

Perfect Idea, Ukraine needs territory that is Pro-Russian, experienced civillian losses at the hand of Ukraine, people that are calling out to Putin for military assistance saying they are Russian to... Yeah Ukraine while in the middle of a man power crisis desperately needs to occupy territory with soldiers it doesn't have, against a population that will resist, also increasing recruits to the Russian army.
Ukraine has also committed war crimes in this war, Russia has as well, both sides have committed evil. Some Ukrainians are Natzi's unfortunately, sad but true, some want revenge, rape and such is perfect propaganda for military recruitment, all army's do it. Also you would give Putin potentially the political power to do another mobilization, as well as increase support for Putin, just like the Russian invasion increased support for Ukraine and zelensky who's support went threw the roof.
Just like the Iraqis welcomed Americans as liberators, which led to a 20 year insurgency and now are a hot bed of anti-american terrorist.
Russian support for the war beleive it or not has actually gone up from the early days.

To be fair adviikas defense was built over 8 years, Ukraine didn't have much success, barely none and Russia only spent 6 months? Or something? Easier said then done. They have also built back line defense networks since last year, taking back Ukraine in the future will be a blood bath if Russia goes all out defense. I honestly don't think Ukraine could.

Conditions are similar to Kharkiv 1942 when Stalin decided to 'attack and defend at the same time' and launched a disastrous push from the Stary Saltov bridgehead... They lost 400,000 troops when 3rd and 23rd Panzer counterattacked and surrounded the attack force...

@doce7606 every single front is an uneasy position though, plus we do not yet know the Russian intentions with this front (they used less soldiers than in Avdiivka, so it might be a decoy, or just a play to tire Ukrainians out even more)

The commander of the Kharkiv forces is Alexander Lapin. He's guy who commanded the First Battle of Kharkiv, the Battle of Krinky, and the Battle of Vuhledar(which he got promoted for lol). He's highly politically connected and is basically put in charge when Russia expects an easy victory. Unfortunately for Russia, he's extremely incompetent, and unfortunately for him these victories never came as easy as expected. My guess is that they expected Ukraine to not get US support and be unable to defend Kharkiv, giving him the victory he sought since the start of the war, and decided to keep their plans the same and just push time tables forward a couple months.
