Played in a British/American pop band in the 80's so travelled around Europe and Germany including Berlin so the Autobahn was a regular occurrence for us back then and it hasn't changed much speed wise apparently but a bit slower back here in Scotland.
I remember coming back from Hannover with a German friend driving and he was doing 120 mph on the autobahn and he said look at these two cars coming up behind us I thought we’d stopped as they were going so fast a Porsche and a Mercedes were seeing who could get to the pearly gates the quickest
Good video again. You must have been travelling in the middle of the day as you seem to have avoided the almost constant "Staus" or traffic jams on the Autobahn. You are right that in principle Autobahns don't have speed limits, but you will find that a large percentage of the network is speed limited (130, 120 or 100, depending on the circumstances). But those Mercs, Audis and BMWs don't hang about...
Always enjoy your films. Well done. Just a little correction: At 3:44 you mention that the speed restriction signs one can see are the only "speed restictions you will ever see on a autobahn." The one seen is shows a computer controlled system which adapts to the amount of traffic. One can see the cameras and sensors underneath the bar with the signs. When traffic is low they can even be turned off. Just seconds afterwards (at 3:57) one can see a typical speed restiction sign (100) on the lefft from the left lane, under the brdge, Typical signs will show for example 60, 80, 100, 120 and 130. No sign will mean no restcition.
I think you may have made too much of there being no speed limits on the German autobahn. I've been living here for almost 30 years and there are ever fewer bits of autobahn where you can truly put the pedal to the metal. In the area between Cologne and Frankfurt, where I've spent most of my time, the stretches of speed-limit-free autobahn have been getting more and more limited. And if a speed limit doesn't slow you down, often the traffic will. Keep up the good work!
Nice Video as usual Scott. as a Manx man I can confirm that the A18 on the isle of Man has Zero speed limits. It does have a recommendation of 40 MPH though as it is very narrow at some points.
Contrasting with Belgium : if too many people respect the speed limits on a particular road, then the speed limits on that road are lowered until the speed cameras produce a sufficient number of fines once more.
Thank you once again Scott. Those Flixbuses are really beautiful. Pity many other place would invest in such a bus and colours. Belfast Bloody PINK or some sort or BLUE muck. Bus looked comfortable. Oh! where too next? Stay Safe. Take Care.
Wow that swelling is terrible, one of your subs said you had caught your nose in the bonnet of your car, but I thought it was a wasp sting! Do you have to book a second seat for it?
I took a Flix Bus from Düsseldorf to Amsterdam in Feb 2020. It came from Frankfurt but was 3 hours late. Thankfully they did give text updates but the bus pick up near the station was basic at best but at least the other passengers were friendly.
The 9 Euro ticket was only available for three months in Summer 2022 but a 49€ ticket will be introduced in April 2023 which can be used for all non-highspeed trains, and all public transport within a month all around Germany.
These days our travels in Germany are always by train but for twenty years we used to use our car. The Autobahn is a great way to travel but it can be a little disconcerting to be travelling at 75mph in the slow lane and have your rear-view mirror full of lorry radiator because you are not going fast enough for the lorry 1 metre behind you that is not allowed to overtake you (you frequently see the signs showing a red lorry next a white car) during certain hours. The other interesting rule that they have (and should be adopted over here) is that lorries are banned from the roads on a Sunday. As an aside, the use of power-tools is banned on a Sunday which is regarded as a day of peace and quiet (lawn mowing is therefore confined to many as a Saturday afternoon chore).
Trucks are often limited to the inside lane only, you see very long queues of trucks in lane 1, often overtaken by east European trucks running in lane 2.
It's not a bad alternative at that price, but the train has a pretty view. I don't know if Mfgs are still a thing, but if so, you should try. Faster than the bus if you get the right driver.
Never travelled on an autobahn in Germany. In any case, have you ever done the full route of Scottish Citylink between Glasgow, Portree, and Uig? I was planning to do it

I thought that not all Autobahns didn't have speed limits - some are unlimited, but some aren't. Careful - the Isle of Man has lots of speed limits, and lots of police enforcing them! However, when there there are what in the UK are 'national speed limit' sections out of town, there are no limits. However, there are sometimes actual 60 limit signs on some rural roads. Goodness, the Autobahns look like the M25.....
Plus in the IOM the roads aren’t really designed for unlimited speed. There is a stretch of dual carriageway near airport but apart from that no motorways. I was there in July and don’t recall drivers going fast.
Flixbus seem to get around don't they!! From recollection though, most Autobahns are restricted at varying levels from 100-130kmh, only a very few are deristricted.
I feel like I have to talk about speed limits in Germany. I've heard some people (luckily not in this video) say that there is no speed limit in general here, but that's not true. Obviously cities have a speed limit (50km/h), but so do country roads. The general speed limit on such country roads is 100km/h, although many have lower limits due to the twisty nature of these roads. The Autobahn is the only type of road that does not have a general speed limit, but this does not always apply. This video highlights one exception at 3:43, temporary speed limits for traffic management reasons, but this is not the only type of speed limits. Any section can have a different and permanent speed limit for various reasons (eg. if it's unusually steep or twisty). This can also be seen in this video, at 3:55 there is a speed limit sign of 100km/h. Also, different vehicles have different speed restrictions. Buses and coaches cannot exceed 100km/h and trucks have an 80km/h speed limit. Cars may drive as fast as the driver is able to safely control the vehicle, so even in a car on an Autobahn with no speed limit you can still be ruled to have driven too fast in the case that excessive speeding caused an accident.
This may have changed since was last in Germany on a coach over 10 years ago, that i heard from drivers that coaches are limited to 50mph in Germany, though on couple Eurolines trip to Poland, we were hitting 70-75mph in Germany, so were speeding, has this speed limit changed then? Keep up the great videos
You mentioned the the Isle of Man is the only other place with roads that have no speed limits, but that is not entirely correct. The Bonneville Salt Flats just west of Salt Lake City, Utah in the United States also does not have a speed limit. Whether or not you consider the salt flats a "road" is understandably debatable. However, it is legal for anyone to drive on them at any speed and it is also where land speed records are commonly set.
It is a myth that there is no speed limit on German Autobahns haven’t got a speed limit. They always (?) have, even when I lived in West Germany from 1957-1959. Some sections are limit free.
There is no speed limit on 70% of the Autobahn, however I as a German don’t think the Autobahn is anything special. It’s just a highway, no idea why so many foreign think it is so fascinating. I’ve seen better roads in other countries. I don’t drive faster than 140km/h anyways.
well there is a small misconception that "Speed Limits" do not apply on the Autobahn...... not sorry to bust your bubble, but Speed Limits *DO apply* on the Autobahn
Germany is free in some respects not free on others - most of the autobahns are down to 120 km h for noise and safety aspects nothing to do with Russian dependency and what the “greens” want. Plus there is plenty of opposition to the current policies of the current coalition on speed limits and Russian sanctions policy it is not the same as the Uk
You are not totally accurate about all autobahns having no speed limits, as there are only certain sections that are unlimited permanently and other sections that are much slower, not just the temporary signs you showed. Also all buses/coaches in the EU are restricted to 100Km/h by engine restrictors, so that is their top speed full stop. Same still in UK at just over 60mph unless going downhill... FYI only.
I am not fully impressed with Flixbus here.. Instead of sending a regular big green bus, they sent 2 black smaller nonFlixbuses. I wasted money in paying to select a seat.
The 1,500km Stuart Highway between Darwin to Alice Springs in Australia still has no speed limits. Actually, I think all highways in rural areas within the Northern Territory are speed limitless.
Urban myth. Most autobahns in Germany have speed limits. And most of those limits are just normal limits.. it’s an urban myth they are all unrestricted (a few are but not most).
Oh I'll be Flixing it next week Scott, cheers for another look at the green machine :)
