I learn as you all do the revelation regarding « emotional, financial, verbal and physical abuse » from Scott Kelly against his family (wife and children). These acts are things we all condemn and based on my experience as a human being, and as therapist, I could say many more things about the way abuses are treated in our western societies. As always in this case the question is raised of the link between the man and the artist ? First : Neurosis can not be reduced to Scott Kelly. I admire the dignity, and the discretion the band showed towards the family. « We did not share this information out of respect for his wife’s direct request for privacy, and to honor the family’s wish not to let their experience become gossip in a music magazine. » We can take into account the pain they face from Kelly’s musical brothers standpoint though it can not be compared to what his family might have been through. Once, Phil Anselmo made a Nazi Salute which is a thing that we can not excuse either. Does it prevent Far beyond driven to be one of the greatest metal album of all time ? To answer Yes, we should have to prove a relationship between the artistic content and the personal history like some philosophy historians do about Martin Heidegger writings. I don’t see anything in Neurosis music that would be an encouragement to commit abuses and I can still say that they are one of the greatest band ever. Still, for Kelly the darkness and the Neurosis was there for good or took over through the years. His biggest mistake was to decline help, and now that he admitted the facts I hope he will find a way to cure himself and repair the damage done if it’s something possible. Music is not a therapy for the creator or shows its limits when we expect from art something than art can not provide. We are also sad to realize that now, Neurosis won’t release other albums, or go on tour. This video is meant to share their music and the greatness they gave to us. I expect comments here to have the same dignity the band showed. This is the best way we can help.
We all have our preferences and it is indeed a great album. I don't think they made a "bad" album. Thanks for the comment. Please share if you enjoyed. Peace !
thanks for sharing ! Yeah From the Hill, for example is so intense, so dear to my heart. Pure stoner combined with Grunge rock emotions. Sure Cobain would have done some music with them like he did with the Melvins IMO.
Ahh my friend. Neurosis is not a band to just listen to. If a person is just listening they will never come close to getting it. Humans are afraid of facing all their pain, that endless deep well of ache within them. All their inner darkness that keeps them unconscious and blind. Afraid of facing all the lies of their thoughts. Neurosis is strictly a band that you must 'Surrender" to. You must fully surrender to the music. And purge purge purge, and purge some more. The ego-thinking mind is afraid of surrendering. As everything in the mind is a total lie. The Prison of the Mind. Do not fall into the trap of trying to understand Neurosis with your mind. Because you will never be able to understand them with your thinking mind. As thoughts can only operate in duality, and duality is total illusion in reality. Neurosis has the ability to totally transform your ideas of what you believe music is. The real magical art of music. And Neurosis can broaden your horizons of creativity that you never knew existed. That are all far beyond words, and far beyond any concepts and far beyond any ideologies of the mind. Listen to Neurosis' entire discography over the next 3 to 6 months, alone, and fully let go, and fully surrender to it. Mold yourself into their music and let it seep into you deeply... honestly. Like when you see drops on a window on a rainy day, as the drops accumulate and mesh together and fall slowly, allow their music to fall slowly into you the same way. And more and more deeper, and don't let your thoughts get in the way. Do not think. Eye feel that Neurosis' album " A Sun that Never Sets" is the perfect starter album for someone new to Neurosis to experiment this with. The more pain you experience by surrendering to their music, the more healing you will receive with the many hidden teachings in the music, and "allow" it to flow through you. Because the immense beauty of the high consciousness of this band is far deeper than mere words, as lyrics are merely at the surface of images, and this magical band of beauty is far beyond any "images" . Truth is ALWAYS Paradoxical ;-) Raze The Stray ... Raze The Stray ... Raze The Stray !!! Someone in another video said that they finally understood Neurosis by smoking some Hash. I did this years and years ago accompanied by 6 beers + Hash. LOL. Neurosis + Hash can break down anyone to the core. Honey oil hash with Neurosis is only for the bravest of the brave. It's definitely not at the powerful depths of Ayahuasca, but it's strong. Step by step by step by step, as we face all the lies of our thoughts. Add some good hash and Neurosis can totally deconstruct and dismantle you nicely. The only cures for pain is hidden perfectly deep within the pain (while everyone else in society avoids it). This is something they will never teach you in any school, or in any church. Nothing is more liberating than fully facing all your darkness deep within that is far beyond the mind of thoughts. The only path to the light is by fully facing all the emptiness and darkness within. Infinite teachings of bliss and beauty far beyond any words ;-)
I have a pretty interesting history with the whole Neurosis experience. Needless to say, I agree 100% with this video. To me, there is no second place other than maybe Black Sabbath. I think of Neurosis in a sort of similar manner as I do Sabbath. Each band member was an absolute irreplaceable piece of their puzzle. My first Neurosis experience was back in 1996. I saw them open for Pantera and Biohazard. I had never even heard of them before. Nothing in this world could have prepared for that moment. I was completely sucked into their cathartic world of sight and sound. Back then they used a video projector of all kinds of ambient footage while they played live. Seeing Scott and Steve banging on the drums in unison with the drummer (as you described) was unlike anything I ever witnessed. This concert was right before Through Silver in Blood came out. I immediately went to my local music store and asked if they had this record, and they didn't know anything about them. I kept trying to find this record. This was back in the early days of the internet, so it wasn't as simple as looking on RUclips, etc... Eventually, I found a used copy of Souls at Zero on CD. It was the original Alternative Tentacles label version. I became so obsessed with that album, even to this day it's probably my favorite album of all time. I can't remember what order the rest of the albums came to me, but I got them all. Through Silver, Enemy of the Sun, the first two, Times of Grace and all of their incredible albums after that. I have went through phases where I could tell you Times of Grace was my favorite, then a few years later, I might say A Sun That Never Sets was my favorite, etc... All of their albums are essential. Neurosis were the band that introduced me to art. I grew up a metalhead. But Neurosis opened up to me what art is all about. I was fortunate enough to see them live many times, including Ozzfest ('97 I think). Thanks for sharing this video. I really enjoyed it. It's cool to see what other people's experiences with this band are like. I would recommend people go check out their album 'A Sun That Never Sets'. Neurosis accomplished something truly incredible with this record. I also back everyone else's comment about Souls At Zero. It's hard to believe that it even exists, or CAN exist. The fact is, is that it does exist! Thank God. Listen to the song 'The Web', in particular. To Crawl Under One's Skin, The title track, every song and instrument comes together like a perfect symphony. Also, as far as samples go, SAZ is my favorite album of theirs when it comes to how the used samples. One more thing, I want to say about A Sun That Never Sets: They could have taken the easy path and made a Times of Grace: Part 2. But those guys are true artists. They will just blow your mind into a million pieces with any of our expectations.
I loved the video for a Sun that Never Sets as much as I loved the Times/Neurot thing, was a huge part of my life at the time, although I still say the previous three was peak Neurosis. The early years, including Souls which is a great album, is their early Crust youth, which undoubtedly is part of who they are. The years after A Sun were them aging into the more prog/stoner years, which is hugely influential to a lot of bands today, I would say MORE SO than the aforementioned era.
Oh god man, that section in “My heart for Deliverance” is one of the single most intense things ever recorded. I have a shit ton of fav bands. King Crimson, Sabbath.. the list is a mile long. However Neurosis is extremely close to my heart in a way that I can’t explain. They’ve helped me get through some very tough times in my life including the loss of a father. I think they are a perfect weapon to get through this crazy world we live in hopefully in one piece!🤘
Yes man. Same for me. They gave me great energy, without being naive, some honest hope, this drive I tried to talk about. Thanks for your comment. Glad you liked it. Peace ! ☮️
Enemy of the Sun was my introduction to Neurosis and it was life changing. They became my favorite band during that time up until they went on hiatus these few years. I saw them live back in that early era during Enemy of the Sun and Through Silver and Blood and it too was incredibly powerful and profound. It felt like I was watching something otherworldly. I’ll never forget it. They truly are a part of my musical life and I’m glad I’ve been able to experience this music throughout the years. Steve Albini engineering Times of Grace and beyond helped really capture that power they were able to project .
Thanks Ben ! The spirit is about to share and connect the dots. On this channel there are many other topics about technique, sounds, guitar pedals. Hope you'll enjoy. 🙏🙏🙏
Neurosis has been my favorite band for over fifteen years now. Everything you said I pretty well agree with, but I would say that I think Through Silver In Blood was their first REAL album. Not literally, just that I feel that's when they really found their sound, or the sound that I love from them. Literally every song on every album from that album forth, has been gold. I found this video by accident but it was a good watch, thank you for your content!
I agree with your wonderful encapsulation of Neurosis. I think they might be the greatest band in the world. They certainly played the most impressive concert I have had the privilege to attend. It was in Melbourne before the release of Fires Within Fires so it was something of a best of concert. It was the most extraordinary concert I have attended. It was like being present at the cosmic Big Bang. Slow percussive start then the crushing riffs! It went on for 2 hours, pummelled by the massive sound. Clothes vibrating and flattened against you body, but the noise crystal clear. I am still in awe of what I witnessed that night. I've seen hundreds of concerts by all the big names ranging from Tool, NIN, ISIS ,The Mahavishnu Orchestra, and many more, but Neurosis made them all seem miniature. I'm an old guy and consider the Soft Machine , Magma and King Crimson as favourite bands but Neurosis puts them in the shade. (maybe not Magma). I was rapt and still am. Fuck!!
For me is the best band in the world!!!! I saw them in switzerland 4 years ago and i’ve speak a moment with Dave and what a cool guy he is …. My favourite album its through silver and blood!!! I love the end of the track strenght of fates, its heavy as f***!!! Hail to every fan of this great band!!!!
Hi, just wanted to let you know that I'm at 1:30 and already suscribed. This band changed my understanding of music, could it be any other band but neurosis are one of a kind. Thank you.
Thanks for this nice comment. I did this video to share these feelings with people who share but also to make others understand how profound their music and their path is. Thanks for sharing and this nice feedback.
Souls at Zero and Enemy of the Sun got me into Neurosis, but then Through Silver in Blood came out. All of my favorite songs are on that record and it basically changed my life. And as a drummer myself, I’m rather offended that you didn’t mention Jason Roeder.
I appreciate your deep dive into neruosis I've tried to introduce them to other people and they don't get it . Luckily my best friend is a fan as big as me. I have someone to go through the journey of there music
Thanks for sharing and hope you enjoyed this content. Like all great bands they have period and each fan tease out a part of himself in these periods. They belong to the hall of Fame and greatness in music. Please share if you loved it. 👌☺️❤️🤝🙏🙏🙏
Souls at Zero is a really great record. Its not as dense as a record like Times of Grace, but its absolutely worth revisiting. Word as Law and Pain of Mind are fantastic hardcore records as well that I think deserve more attention.
My favorite thing about Neurosis is that if I'm not mistaken, Steve von Till is a middle school teacher when they're not on tour. Imagine growing up and getting interested in metal and then realizing your teacher fronted one of the most amazing bands to have ever existed. Sad I have to talk about them in the past tense, but we can all thank that to Scott Kelly.
Times of grace and through silver and blood are one of my favorites in metal but TSAB does more to me in terms of atmosphere, the use of samples and the drones and drumming in these album are the best in my experience in pulling into the atmosphere of the album...
Yeah true. There are many aspects to their music even if one can recognize immediately their style. I am not sure they ever did an album which was average just different from the one before, surprising. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and please share if you enjoyed. 🤗🔗👍🔥
As soon as I read 'the Best Band in the world' I was 100% in agreement with you before watching the video. Who on earth can possibly beat them? They are the best band I've seen live by miles and miles, no contest.
I love it too very much ! More "stoner" but very good. Beauty of Neurosis is the variety of things they propose. People saying they are samee didn't listen to them accurately. Thanks for watching and share if you loved it. 🙏🤞🎸🎶
Noah Landis was in Christ on Parade and had his own band Young Lions briefly but aside from Tribes of Neurot I’m not sure of any experimental sounds like his keys and synth sounds
Amen thanks for commenting for the information. I will have a look. We can't know everything about band but I guess you understood how much I love them. Thanks for support.
@@RealSoundReviews totally, loved the video. I’ve been a fan of Neurosis since I was 12, my favorite album changes all the time but Enemy of the Sun elevated them to one of my favorites, seen them several times over the years and even became good friends with Dave, his wife and dog over the past year.
Serious question, how do we enjoy this band going forward? Given the recent revelations, can we separate the artist from the art? I've always struggled to that to be honest
thanks for reaching out and telling me this. I am quite stunned, as I didn't know. I will try to have better informations and publish an answer in comment further.
I pretty shocked too, was just googling Shrinebuilder, another Scott Kelly band, was trying to see if that record was ever to be re-issued when I saw the news
Easy one. I just put my headphones on and enjoy the music like I always have. I don't care about the artists personal life. It doesn't taint the music for me at all. I don't get why everyone is so obsessed with not wanting to listen to Neurosis now. It's all over the Facebook groups now, too.
I discovered them at through silver in blood. Nothing from neurosis before that is worth listening to . Tribes of neurot is another thing altogether. Every thing from them is amazing.
I need everyone in this comment section to know, I've liked every single one of your comments in my heart, I didn't have time to thumbs up every single one. This is my favourite video now.
I was on tour with neurosis in 96. From bergen to flekkefjord. I drank all their booze. Pissed myself, and after that they had this rule. Never let a stranger get on the bus. Thats my story. But after that its my favorite band ever❤
There are many way to enter their music, their world. All suggestions are welcome to share our common passion more enthusiastically. Thanks for the comment, please share :)
I disagree, the first real transition towards post metal is Souls at Zero, not later. This is the second album with Steve Von Till, and the first album where they really go into those long more elaborate songs, with different instruments like violin and trumpets. It's not as complex as what Tool would later do (and still be called post metal), Neurosis is more raw, and more visceral. But it's already there in Souls at Zero. The issue is that the production is a bit lacking, and the first real Neurosis crazy heavy wall of guitar is Enemy of the Sun. But Souls at Zero already has the apocalyptic atmosphere, it's just a lot colder sound and high pitched sounding (especially the guitars) than on the later albums. The best Neurosis albums, that fans usually prefer (at least the european fans that I know better than american fans), are the period from Souls at Zero until Times of Grace. These 4 albums are masterpieces, with almost nothing to throw away. A Sun that Never Sets starts a new period for the band. Dave Edwardson doesn't sing anymore, there are many more post rock parts, fewer instruments, it's more simple and melancholic rather than apocalyptic and explosive. So the explosions, when they do happen, are more noticeable. The Eye of Every Storm is even more simple, almost empty, or rather barren. We also lose almost completely the industrial samples that Noah Landis used to have. At this point, a lot of fans were a bit confused about where the band was going, diving so much into post rock. So it almost feels like they tried to return to their old nature with Given To The Rising, except in my opinion they quite failed. The production is weird, and although they try to go back to something raw and promordial, it feels weird. I never listen to this album. While I still go back to A Sun... and The Eye.. And then we get to Honor... the worst album since The World As Law. It's not awful, but it's like the band doing a parody of themselves... We All Rage in Gold for example, is just a bad song, with the uninspired riff, the awful post rock parts, the weak singing... The album still has Albini's amazing sound for it, but that's all. There are some good moments, but it feels long, tired... Like the band has no energy and not much to say anymore. At this point I had given up with the band, but luckily Fires within Fires still showed the band had some energy left. It felt like a nice little fun album. It's quite short for Neurosis, and it's straight to the point. Good riffs, good energy, although still that apocalyptic vibe. It's probably the last record the band will ever put out with the Scott Kelly debacle, but I'm glad it's not a terrible one. Overall I still listen to Souls, Enemy, Through Silver and Times, those albums are eternal, and nothing has come close since in terms of intensity and power, except maybe This Gift is A Curse - I, Guilt Bearer (check it out if you want a really angry Neurosis).
1:40 out of every comment ever said on a youtube video, this is probably the one that did not age well beyond all such other possible comments. Damn. That said, still love them. Maybe love them now that they are just flawed humans and not gods? Also to be fair, they peaked with the unholy trinity (which is fitting, really) Enemy, Through Silver, and Times. THAT is peak Neurosis, and all three are quite different. I have a tattoo that combines Times and Tribes albums, its basically the back of the shirt and the image on the tribes album. One of my favorite tattoos!

Neurosis and Scott Walker changed the way I think of music.
Awesome content man!
Thanks 🙏🙏🙏these comments are the best award but please share. Tough to fight the algorithm.
A collab between the 2 would have been interesting!
one of the most in depth and intuitive analysis of Neurosis - it's music, motivation, lyrics and vision. absolutely great. thank you.
Thank you for honoring my favorite musical artists of all time. Im so glad to see others sharing the same ideas and feelings about their art.
my pleasure, this kind of messages make things worth. Please share if you enjoyed it
I first saw them as an opener in '93. It made an impact. They did a lot of touring.
Yes. They are a great live band as well you are totally right to mention this. Thanks for your comment and please share if you loved it. Bests ;)

Thanks for sharing these strong feelings. Steve Albini's death is a inrecoverable loss. Great comments ! Be welcome and share if you loved it
Agree, best band in the world! Great video
thanks man ! Glad to read people who share this view. don't hesitate to share in case some people want to understand better :)
Loved this piece on my favorite band. Subscribed
Thanks Ben ! The spirit is about to share and connect the dots. On this channel there are many other topics about technique, sounds, guitar pedals. Hope you'll enjoy. 🙏🙏🙏
A sun that never sets. It's a magnificent album that, at least to me tells the story of trial and loss. Everytime I play that album it hits home.
Thanks for sharing! Please share if you enjoyed. This album is special and matter to me as well
gotta give souls at zero a deeper listen - its my favorite, their first foray into apocalyptic beauty
I don't pretend to have exhausted all the beauty and talent they bring into their albums. Thanks for sharing and please, share if you loved it. :)

Over time neurosis has become in my zone of well-being. They has that sound that never get old.
my pleasure, it is meaning ful to share it. Take care and share if you loved it
Souls at Zero and Enemy of the Sun got me into Neurosis, but then Through Silver in Blood came out. All of my favorite songs are on that record and it basically changed my life.
And as a drummer myself, I’m rather offended that you didn’t mention Jason Roeder.
Thanks for your comment. Please share if you enjoyed it. Neurosis is an influence for so many musicians.
Great review.
🙏thanks all the best in 2023 and share if you enjoyed:)
One of the greatest bands ever for me. Right up there with Sabbath, Crimson, Enslaved, Isis and Can.
Times of Grace is my favorite, but a close second is A Sun That Never Sets. Have both album covers in massive posters in my living room
Enemy of the Sun is probably my favorite so far, it's just so Chaotic
It is a great album. I love it too. Re-discovered some aspects recently. Thanks for your comment. Please share if you loved it.
Neurosis and Today is the Day shares the top spot for me.
Thanks for watching, thx for this comment 🙏
I appreciate your deep dive into neruosis I've tried to introduce them to other people and they don't get it . Luckily my best friend is a fan as big as me. I have someone to go through the journey of there music
Pain of mind and soul's at zero.....
And every record since... it's music that exists on another level above all else.
Thanks for your contribution indeed. My position is to mention that I don't know something well. Bests !
My favorite thing about Neurosis is that if I'm not mistaken, Steve von Till is a middle school teacher when they're not on tour. Imagine growing up and getting interested in metal and then realizing your teacher fronted one of the most amazing bands to have ever existed. Sad I have to talk about them in the past tense, but we can all thank that to Scott Kelly.
ohhh I learn that from you. thanks
What's the song at starting at 14:59?
My heart for deliverance from Honor found in decay
@@RealSoundReviews Thank you very much!
Of all the bands I'm pissed about knowing I'll never get to see them live, this is one I'm the most pissed about.
Whats the song at 14:50?
My heart for deliverance on Honor found in decay.
Before seeing the vid. Ill say just because. Now let's see.
As soon as I read 'the Best Band in the world' I was 100% in agreement with you before watching the video. Who on earth can possibly beat them? They are the best band I've seen live by miles and miles, no contest.
thanks for enthusiasm and feelings. Please share if you loved it :)
honor found in decay is my favorite record.
I love it too very much ! More "stoner" but very good. Beauty of Neurosis is the variety of things they propose. People saying they are samee didn't listen to them accurately. Thanks for watching and share if you loved it. 🙏🤞🎸🎶
Easily one of the most important bands within metal and hardcore
Thanks for this encouraging comment. Please share if you enjoyed it. My bests
@@meandave cool ! Don't hesitate to share because it's really tough to promote this work :)
eye of every storm.....i think thats the title.
Serious question, how do we enjoy this band going forward? Given the recent revelations, can we separate the artist from the art? I've always struggled to that to be honest
thanks for reaching out and telling me this. I am quite stunned, as I didn't know. I will try to have better informations and publish an answer in comment further.
your question is relevant and I have tried to answered my way in the pinned comment. This is a very sad news indeed.
@@overcookedsoul825 the band themselves is obsessed because they don't understand. I put a comprehensive pin comment
I discovered them at through silver in blood. Nothing from neurosis before that is worth listening to . Tribes of neurot is another thing altogether. Every thing from them is amazing.
Thanks for watching! Glad we share the same interest
Souls at zero is definitely worth listening to.
Yup
oh ! I remember music by you published on a french label called Naninani 15 years ago !
@@RealSoundReviews :)
I need everyone in this comment section to know, I've liked every single one of your comments in my heart, I didn't have time to thumbs up every single one. This is my favourite video now.
You are welcomed bro. Building a community is the best reward for me. If you loved it please share and subscribe. 🗣️👀💞🙏🎶
Best band 100%, my favourite album is eye of every storm. So sad to learn about Kelly
I was on tour with neurosis in 96. From bergen to flekkefjord. I drank all their booze. Pissed myself, and after that they had this rule. Never let a stranger get on the bus. Thats my story. But after that its my favorite band ever❤
Hehe yeah the behind the scenes things are what they are for the best or worse. Thanks for your comment, take care, and share if you loved it.
Souls at zero is one of their best albums u should get yourself familiar with it.
There are many way to enter their music, their world. All suggestions are welcome to share our common passion more enthusiastically. Thanks for the comment, please share :)
There the symphonic sound for disturbed souls that's how I describe them
Neurosis Electric Wizard Tool
Overall I still listen to Souls, Enemy, Through Silver and Times, those albums are eternal, and nothing has come close since in terms of intensity and power, except maybe This Gift is A Curse - I, Guilt Bearer (check it out if you want a really angry Neurosis).
maybe and thanks for this comment. Hope you agree with other commentaries.
Grace, times of grace. Do it. No big deal. Sounds like tribes of neurot smoke a fat bowl and drink a beer.
The greatest of all time. Jesus lays in mud so they dont get dirty.
Why is Neurosis the best band in the world? Because they never gave a fudge about what anybody else thought.
Cuz they ain't 💩
1:40 out of every comment ever said on a youtube video, this is probably the one that did not age well beyond all such other possible comments. Damn.
That said, still love them. Maybe love them now that they are just flawed humans and not gods? Also to be fair, they peaked with the unholy trinity (which is fitting, really) Enemy, Through Silver, and Times. THAT is peak Neurosis, and all three are quite different.
I have a tattoo that combines Times and Tribes albums, its basically the back of the shirt and the image on the tribes album. One of my favorite tattoos!
How to say a lot and still say nothing at all...🙄😏
It's interesting that you add nothing to nothing then 😂 try again ...
