Based somewhat loosely on a comic-book crossover of the same name, Robocop Versus The Terminator is a side-scrolling platform-shooter that brings together two much-loved sci-fi series in an orgy of robot-stomping, bullet-shooting violence.
The timelines of the Terminator and RoboCop universes collide where cyborg cop, Alex Murphy, exists in a world where Skynet rules and humanity clings to existence by a thread. Aiding the human resistance in it's battle against the machines, RoboCop must fight his way through numerous levels in an attempt to gain access to Skynet's bunker and to destroy it.
Each of the game's stages requires the player to guide RoboCop to a designated exit, all the while destroying a plethora of bad guys from both RoboCop and Terminator universes. Certain levels introduce additional objectives, such as locating/rescuing hostages, or destroying Skynet infrastructure, but there is nothing particularly complicated about this game.
Although the game might be somewhat lacking in originality, it makes up for this by possessing some top-notch shooting action and violence. In fact, the game boasts some surprisingly gory death animations, no doubt as a result of being released in the wake of Mortal Kombat, with enemy thugs evaporating in a curdled red slop of flesh and gore.
RoboCop is initially equipped with his trademark Auto-9 automatic handgun, but is able to retrieve and store up to two additional weapons from the battlefield. The arsenal on offer is suitably expansive with homing missiles to bad-guy atomising laser guns fleshing out our hero's arsenal.
All of the weapons have unlimited ammunition and is something I wasn't prepared for. I kept looking for an ammo counter or expected the weapon to run out after a certain time, but it never came. Instead, the game robs you of the weapon you had selected if/when you lose a life; this isn't too much of a problem in the early levels, but it serves to make things very tough indeed in later levels, especially when it comes to fighting certain bosses.
As is the staple for the genre, each level culminates in a showdown against an iconic foe from the RoboCop or Terminator universes and this is where the game's difficulty can take a sudden upswing. I chose, perhaps somewhat foolishly, to play the game on "Killer" difficulty (the hardest) and found some of the boss fights, particularly the ED-209 and final Skynet encounters to be particularly punishing on one's fingers.
The game features some very solid graphics with the main RoboCop sprite looking great and boasting some very solid animation. In fact, I would go to say that this game features probably the best looking 2D rendition of RoboCop in any game for a home console. The rest of the enemy sprites are nicely detailed, although the majority of the enemies are static and don't move, which is something of a shame.
Things are pretty strong in the audio department too. Music was never the Mega Drive's strong point and this game doesn't buck the trend, but the sound effects are generally of a very high standard and sound just like their original movie counterparts. The iconic Auto-9 gunfire is particularly impressive, plus there are some reasonably clear speech effects, one of which sounds suspiciously like Linda Hamilton.
My main issue with the game is one of thematic styling rather than anything to do with the game mechanics (which are all pretty solid). Just about every interpretation of the Terminator universe shows the US as little more than crumbling remains following a catastrophic nuclear war, yet none of that is really evident here. Instead, the game seems to shoe-horn Skynet and the Terminators into RoboCop's crime-infested Old Detroit/Delta City, even going so far as to have RoboCop rescuing executives from the OCP offices; somehow I don't think that people would be worrying about going to work when legions of sentient man-killing droids are roaming the streets.
The other slight niggle is that, despite being a robot made of titanium and weighing several tonnes, RoboCop is possessed of the athletic abilities akin to most Olympic gymnasts. I get that this is a platform game and that the game would feel pretty restricted without the ability to jump or climb, but RoboCop was always a lumbering force of nature, not an acrobat.
Fortunately, neither issue manages to overshadow what is an uncomplicated, yet surprisingly decent action romp. If you're in the market for some solid 'droid-stomping action then you could certainly do worse than to pick up a copy of RoboCop Versus the Terminator.

I use to beg my Mom to take me to Blockbuster Video every Friday night and this was one of the many games in my video game rental rotation. I use to absolutely love this game.
Played this a hundred times or more....never ever found the secret OCP office in the first level! Madness!
I remember this game making all sorts of headlines for all the blood. I went to a catholic elementary and when word got around about the violence it was on. Every kid who had a Sega or SNES had this game by Christmas morning.
This was a great childhood game to play.
Brings back memories. I was part of that c64 era when in some games you had 1 life only, no saved points and you sometimes literally had to memorise random game interjections and literary take 10+ hrs solid to beat a game. Loved this game and it was so. Difficult but competed it. I. Think gamers have it far to easy now, what with all the saving, walthroughs, cheats etc.
Just to be clear, those enemies Murphy was shooting in the beginning - the ones that were exploding into blood all over the place - were resistance fighters. If that was a Skynet future, then all humans are his enemy, meaning that our Detroit cyborg cop had to plow through people in a big misunderstanding to get through to the actual Terminators.
Pretty sure those are supposed to be detroit criminals. Dont forget this game is a universes collide kind of thing, so you can expect to see elements from both franchises

I like how in the ED-209 boss battle they created a feeling of real randomness from the thing - it was hard to tell when it was just taking a lunging step forward or when it was going to commit to charging all the way across the screen. That's rare in a game from this era.

The sounds of the guns and explosions also sound way better here than on the SNES.

@@Wil_Dsense Against a Resistance programed and experienced T-800? Ya, maybe. Skynet's fresh off the assembling line T-800s is only good for hunting plain humans and as Robfinlay pointed out: sometimes they even fail against that. That slow bot walk Murphy does is mostly for comedy and film limitations; if that is what your line of reasoning was. Robo could not take all of Skynet single handed as he is in this game, but a coordinated assault with Connor & Tech-Com would be a glorious thing to see.
@@kylebryant8613 Well thanks for the Well thought out comment and providing some good reasoning there as to how it could be possible, while still not underplaying the sheer dominance the terminator(s)/skynet forces would have over robocop in general. But I guess that’s how a good movie COULD be made, with robocop being with the good guys as underdogs against skynet. And the only reason why Sarah And John Connor ‘survived’ the Terminators because they actually had a lot of help - from basically the father of the resistance (Kyle Reece) and skynet itself! (Reprogrammed Terminator). I see your called Kyle too. Cool name by the way 👍🏼

This was a really decent game that people seem to forget existed on the Genesis. Controls were buttery and responsive, graphics were gory and awesome, music was catchy as Hell and used the Genesis sound chip pretty effectively. I especially love the tune a 6:41, it's like something from NBA Jam

It saddens me that they never made a Robocop vs Terminator movie in the 90's, at the height of their popularity.
Amazing video and brilliant gameplay man, I never reach anything beyond stage 3 not just because the game was super hard but boring in terms of enemy variant and that one tune being replayed from start to finish including the intro was mind numbing.
I remember this game being really tough.

That ED-209 battle was absurdly long. What a bullet sponge. I can't believe they just decided to make a giant floating terminator head the final boss.

RoboCup Iron Police was one of the best games of Nintendo and Commodore. What a real time it was. Personal computers or PCs ruined everything.
This is one of the few Genesis games that was better than its SNES counterpart. Usually Nintendo always was the better version of the game to go with.

I wonder why when fighting against boss ED-209 you don't want to pick the new weapon on the floor.
The ED-209 cannon is one of the weaker weapons in the game, so I preferred to keep hold of the 3-way cannon.

Nice. I beat this game too back in 6th or 7th grade it was. Took me a whole ass weekend to do so. I never shut me SG off. I always told everyone Skynet was a big ass floating Terminator head. Now to all the friends who didn't believe me can now know. No game genie either. I was poor growing up. My mother wasn't going to Kop me that as a kid no matter how much I begged her for it. 😂

There is a trick for the last boss: go close to him (with ED209 weapon), if you touch him and you are at the good distance, he should give you items. After 60 sec of firing, he will die...

For titanium/steel endoskeletons the terminators sure dissolve into a suspicious amount of red goo... Oh, wait... Robo is just indiscriminately butchering anything that moves, truely the darkest timeline. Seems like he could've just put his hands up and kept walking, the resistance would have stopped shooting at him. But then again, they were wearing 90s clothing in 2077, so maybe Robo joined the Fashion Police?

The boss battle against ED-209 takes to damn long to finish. I got to the boss with only the regular gun. And I thought it was a bug, because it took forever to kill him. The game is fun, but lacks polish.
What bothers me about this game is that regardless of finding all of the secret levels, including the 3 secrets in the very fist level and even the secret level in the secret level (not sure how to explain it), the difficulty you play it on, etc... there's no ending. Has anyone ever gotten an ending to this game other than "Congratulations, have you found all of the Secret Levels?" Fantastic game, definitely one of my favorites, but has anyone had any luck with actually getting an ending to the game?

Its a good game, but my only criticism is that if you lose your weapons during a boss fight, killing them with the auto 9 is an absolute chore. Its often not hard but it does so little damage it just takes forever. Git gud i guess.
