Do me a kindness and watch Don't Blame Me live from Reputation Tour. I promise it's not what you have imagined. It will only take 4 minutes out of your life. It’s blues with a church like choir build up. Amazing. People think she’s still writing teeny-bopper songs. Far from it. Don't Blame Me is very seductive.

I'm not saying she's bad but it's obvious that she's overrated, there are hundreds of female artists who are better at both singing and writing. But it's fascinating that she has succeeded so well because there must be lots of young women who look like her, who sing, write songs and even have a better voice but who have never had success or are never getting fame even if they try hard. To me Taylor Swift seems so bland and boring so it's fascinating.

I am 72. Back in the day my dad would state his hatred for the Rolling Stones, the Animals and Jimi Hendrix. "How can anyone listen to that garbage?" he would ask me, a trace of anger in his voice. Now I'm in his shoes. I will say that I understand one thing my father did not, I am not the target audience. So, my opinion of her music is voluntarily muted, and I have no anger.

These entertainment moguls could literally grab any girl off the street and create another “Taylor Swift” any time they want to. And they will once Taylor ages out. Their plan works because all the trainable NPC’s participate through buying her tickets and music. She’s a corporate creation. A packaged commodity. I am rather disgusted because if people just wouldn’t participate it would all end. Taylor isn’t the only one raking in the money. Stop feeding the beast.

I don't understand it either. Her music is the very definition of average, bland pop music with a shallow message, and personally I don't find her very attractive at all. She has zero personality from what I can gather. Like her music. I'm not saying that in a rude way, I really do feel like there is simply nothing to her. And that is likely by design, so as to attract the biggest audience. I look at her and see nothing there, just a brand.
Compare her to Michael Jackson, someone who was similarly as popular back in his hay day (MUCH more popular but still.) MJ has charm, flare, style, great music and killer moves. I don't get any of that from Taylor Swift. She still just comes off as a teenager to me, someone who has a vague understanding of the world but nothing beyond surface level.

I've never heard someone summarize my thoughts about Taylor Swift so eloquently. Thank you, Dr Grande! For years I've been so tired of hearing about Ms Swift, and wondered why she is so bloody popular. I cannot name one of her songs, though I might recognize one if I listen carefully. Your analysis was spot on, especially regarding the future. At the risk of sounding like a bitter old man, I do get annoyed when an artist such as Taylor eclipses so many others with more to offer. I agree that Taylor's music needs to evolve and turn the creative corner, so to speak, if she is to be regarded seriously as an artist, not just a performer. As of now I think of her as a 1 trick pony act in a circus. From what I have heard, her songs do deliver the same lyrics, message, and musical compositions over and over. I guess her fans are rabid about their connection with her. If that's what they crave, then good for Taylor. She can count her money. I honestly cannot tolerate any of her songs and do not understand the Swift phenomenon.

I'm not a huge Taylor Swift fan, and part of me is baffled by her extreme fame. At the same time, I have nothing against her. I know that level of success doesn't come without having the brains to make good decisions, a lot of sacrifice, and an incredible work ethic. She also has a relatively wholesome image, so I feel she's a decent role model for young girls. (Compare most of her songs and videos to other very popular female artists who aren't shy about using their sexuality to create rather vulgar and explicit songs and videos.) And honestly, I have to admire her for knowing exactly what she wanted in life at such an early age. What is extraordinary is how she has managed to keep her original fan base for so long, while acquiring so many new, young fans. (I teach piano and most of my young female students are heartbroken they can't get tickets to her show when it comes to town next year. Some of these children are only 10 years of age and are diehard fans.) I do believe her music has deepened a little over the years. I don't know a lot of her music (other than songs my students want to learn, and of course others you can't escape from unless you live under a rock), but she performed a 10 minute song on SNL once and it was utterly captivating. The woman knows how to deliver a song, and she knows how to engage her audience in sharing those feelings together. That's why I think she's had such longevity. I hope that as she gets closer to 40, her music will grow substantially. Anyhow, just my two cents.

I am a huge Taylor Swift fan because one of my daughters fell in love with her when she was in elementary school. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have ever listened to her music. I also agree that she is not the world's greatest vocalist. But I do think her music has evolved over time and grown more mature. We were able to get tickets to her Eras tour and it was phenomenal. By far, the best concert I've ever seen in my life --- and I am from back in the day. I've seen Led Zeppelin, The Who, Michael Jackson when he was at the top of his career, The Cars, The Eagles, etc. I have never watched any performer sing and dance for 3.5 hours without taking a break. Though I enjoyed every second, I was tired from just watching her. Also, she made a huge stadium feel like an intimate concert venue. My daughter is now 25, and she still loves Swift, but also thinks that some people go too far with their obsession with her. It might be interesting to hear you do an analysis on the fans who get hyper focused on a particular artist to the point that it is unhealthy. It is certainly not healthy to love a performer so much that you condemn and demean anyone who prefers a different style of music. As the mother of two daughters, I'm grateful that they grew up watching Swift evolve. There are far worse role models out there. Someone on this thread compared her to the Kardashians. I don't see the comparison at all. I would be horrified if my daughters turned out to be famous for being obsessed about their appearance, starving themselves, having plastic surgery, shopping and talking trash about one another and other people. Taylor has done a ton to support other artists, get people to register to vote, support women's rights and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Also, though she doesn't seem to be so lucky at romantic love, she has maintained many long-term friendships. Many in her band, including her back up singers/dancers have toured with her for over a decade. Is she perfect? Absolutely not. But I love seeing a woman gain success. As a woman working in a male denominated field myself, I love her song, "The Man." It has nothing to do with romance, but sexism. Sometimes I listen to that song on my way to work to get my day going. Thank you for your great videos. I find them very comforting, even when the topic is disturbing like a major crime. Your delivery is thoughtful, insightful, and I feel you always do a good job of looking at things from every angle possible. Well done. Thank you.

I agree with everything you said. I think the real issue is the obsessed fans. I’ve seen that happen over the years. What I love about Taylor Swift is that is empowering and encouraging for young girls and young women everywhere. She has written about breakups with men. She is, essentially, a story teller. Her stories have been helpful to people who feel misunderstood or overlooked in particular. Her story telling is exceptionally relatable. I think she’s a great role model. When she found out that ticketing agencies were way overcharging people to go to her concerts, she paused her tour until they addressed and resolved the issue. When she tours a country, she gives a percentage of the tour to help the poor and needy in that country as well as other charities. I had been thinking, wow - finally a role model the walks the walk instead of just talking the talk.
I think that’s what upset me when I saw this video. I enjoy Dr. Grande’s videos but I found this disturbing. Listening to his input on criminals, serial killers, other people with behavior issues, etc is eye opening. Getting a take on something that seems impossible to understand from a professional can be very satisfying. So when I saw him attack Taylor Swift, it was a real let down. Well that’s my rant. Thank you for saying what you said.

i think some music has become more provocative and explicit, but it may be because euphemisms were lost on me as a child and now they are instantly picked up on, so songs may seem to have more explicit lyrics to me than they used to. i’d be curious to compare lyrics between a few songs from today and the past within my fav genres.

People don't like other artists and no one is defending them. It's weird. I'm like - I don't get it. I'm not seeing it. Her music does not speak to me in any way and I feel there are so many artists out there with so much more vocal talent and writing talent. Again, I just don't get it. I think she has a great marketing strategy though - she knows who to appeal to. No Barbra Streisand or yes, Karen Carpenter or Sara Bareilles. Pure raw talent without the need to distract from the lack of talent with extra showmanship.

@@HappinessDIY Well, it's a matter of ballance really. Presumably they were working class people with their own lives and careers or jobs. It didn't sound to me like Taylor had at that point suddenly become a rising star, yet they moved (implying they stopped working in their existing jobs/business). Parents wouldn't normally do such a thing unless there were much more promise and opportunity to invest in the childs career. A child doesn't usual have a career and is allowed to just be a child.
This move is a bit of a red flag imho, for helicopter parenting or pageant parents, living vicariously through their child.
I had my own situation as a kid with a moderately well off retired father pushing to turn my hobby (beekeeping) into a working business. I did say I wanted to be a beekeeper *when I grow up* at about 9yrs old, but I didn't say I want to grow up right now.
By 12yrs I had almost 20 colonies. I spent some of my best childhood years building boxes and frames painting them, digging colonies out of walls and working hard like a man, instead of just enjoying my hobby. My father was an extremely capable handyman and retired industrialist. His attempts at setting me up for success as an adult, were somewhat at the expense of my success as a child, and of our parent/child relationship.
You know Michael Jackson also had very supportive parents, but he had no childhood. He never grew up as a result. Parents trying to make you an adult when you're still a child, will only succeed, in making you still a child when you're an adult.

You should do a review of her albums folklore and evermore which could be something you'd like. To many of us her songs are up to interpretation so to hear people say she's only singing about heartbreak I instantly assume they've only listened to the singles. Some of her songs address her moms cancer diagnosis, her friendships, her politics, a young fan of hers that passed away, songs about moving on and changing, family, self worth, moving to a new city, friendships, revenge etc. I think if more people just decided to listen to an album through and through they might have their minds changed (probably still wont like her songs but who knows😂)
Her songs on folklore cover a range of things such as:
    1. The 1-Reminiscing on past love (obviously)
    2. Cardigan- part of a love triangle thats from the perspective of a made up character called Betty, which is about seperation and them reuniting.
    3. The last great american dynasty- The life of Rebecca Harkness
    4. Exile- a argument between 2 exes, Bon Iver sings from the guys perspective.
    5. My tears ricochet-the sale of her masters to scooter braun
6.Mirrorball her being a chameleon to the audience to entertain them
    7. Seven-a childhood friend suffering abuse from her father
    8. August- describes a summer fling, that was serious for the girl but the guy goes back to Betty (part of the love triangle)
    9. This is me trying- sung from the perspective of an alcoholic that feels like they're not good enough, expressing regret.
    10. Illicit Affairs- about infidelity and the lengths the narator will go to to carry on the affair.
    11. Invisible string- about an invisible connection between two lovers and how she's moved on from the boys that broke her heart and sends their babies presents.
    12. Mad woman- about, wait for it.. a mad woman😂
    13. Epiphany- about the trauma nurses faced in the pandemic and her grandfather who fought at the battle of Guadalcanal.
    14. Betty- the end of the love triangle from the boy's perspective, him apologising but never taking full accountablity.
    15. Peace- the effects of her fame on her relationship and about how no matter how much she tries she'll never be able to shield them from it.
    15. Hoax- probably the saddest love song on folklore.
I spent 10 minutes on this😂. If anyone wants to give this album a listen, and come back and tell me what you think. And I don't think she's overrated (who da guessed it?), because I think what she's experiencing now is the pay off of 18 years of work in this industry.
Still appreciate the video and the analysis.

"Swifties" absolutely refuse to question her authenticity, in any moment, ever. it's fascinating to me how they seem to forget or are never even willing to consider the most likely key motives of the famous. sure... she technically could be a fully authentic gentle soul with only her heart on her sleeve... but what are even the chances of that? not good.
and I absolutely cannot understand the inability to see how intricately contrived and controlled every moment of Taylor in the media is. even more so than of other celebrities. she really should be nicknamed "Taylor Script" at this point.
Dr. Grande fans appreciate him for his real candidness, and unwillingness to pander. I would doubt there's any large number of Swifties that are devout Dr. Grande supporters. I would think the majority of this channel's subscribers have a much lower tolerance for all things contrived. We want to hear it how it is. And we won't be offended by it.
There is seeming authentic and then there is actually authentic. But they are very much different. People are best to be able to differentiate the two in their world.

This is so well said. That is the thing that bothers me the most about her - she has always come across as fake to me. From early days of winning awards (hands to the face, surprised look every single time) to this current fake relationship. Everything about her is carefully curated. It's amazing to me how many grown adults think her curated image is actually who she is.

Unfortunately, the success of technically complex music performed by bands who were excellent songwriters and incredibly skilled live musicians and singers died decades ago and was replaced by mundane, soulless, synth-driven, and factory-produced mediocrity. I fear we will never see another RUSH, Queen, Judas Priest, Eagles, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin or similar "discovered" again in this life time. That kind of heart and soul just doesn't sell anymore, which is tragic.

I feel like she has a great voice, but it’s generic and standard for a pop artist. What she lacks is range; there are singers who can sing in a low voice and a high voice (eg. Freddie Mercury, Julian Casablanca, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Layne Stanley, Adele, Beyoncé, etc.). From what I hear of her music, she’s only able to go high. While that’s not a big issue for many artists, as others have had generic voices which they use to make it, it’s why her music doesn’t really appeal to me. There is a lack of diversity in her vocals and range which makes it a little boring to listen to.
I did love her country music era, and I thought that was where she shone the brightest.
