I apply transfer wax (beeswax & tallow) to the surface which gives me something to draw through with my pencil. It's simply a waxy surface that allows me to see my pencil lines. :)
What incredible craftsmanship. A true artist. Thanks for sharing that. How many years did it take to build the skill confidence level? I am a retired union pipe welder and I know after so long it's like breathing. I used to joke with guys and tell them I could "Think" it in. But after a while I thought that that was not far from the truth. The brain, eye and hand just creates. You become lost in the thing. Thanks Sam!
Yeah I can. Whoever is doing it is a troll. Unfortunately you have a bunch of people that downvote videos for no reason other than to cause controversy.
What would you call it? I know that is an ongoing argument between air assisted and chisel/push engravers, but still - the machine is guided by hand. Hence hand engraving.
WOW!! Fantastic! I had no idea! :) well done!! What is that you are putting on the metal with your finger tip? Obviously for you to write on top of it but are you using a pencil? Thanks for posting this Sam! :)
This looks amazing. Is the rotary tool essential to make the curves like that? Have you done any Old English? I can tell that's gotta take time to learn.
Beautiful work! Sorry to hear about your accident. Rev. 21:3,4. is an encouraging scripture. By the way, I saw you have a few dislikes. I just don't understand how anyone could dislike this video. Keep up the good work. I love art of all kinds.
Hey Sam silly question probably but I am just trying to self learn wood working and carving. I'm really liking it so far. I am having a issue though keeping everything stable while I am carving and have been looking at different vises and things. What kind of vise are you using there? I like it and think that would be perfect for my applications. Also do you any suggestions on certain clamp systems or vises that I should pick up? Thank you in advance and I appreciate your videos keep it up I'm learning a lot and I greatly appreciate it.
Hi Kevin, I just read your post to Sam and was happy to see that someone else besides me are still interested in the old arts of carving which I've Always found Fasinating.. In October of 2012 I was the unfortunate victem of a motor vehical accident that left me without 1 of my legs and a shattered spine. I took up wood carving as a way of staying sane , I'm sure you already know but on the internet there are many local wood carving groups that meet and have a blast. these guys and also a bunch of very tatanted women are always happy to find new ppl interested in carving and usually go out of they're way to teach you something you ask about. My new fasination is hand carving into metal and cant wait to really get started. I'm sure its going to be as rewarding as wood carving.. Good luck in your new adventure , I'm sure your gonna be one of the greats. Hope to see your work on the net someday. I'll keep me eyes open
hi I have seen you work its awesome , I am a self thought artist i can to sculpting , I hanet to know the tool you used and name of this tool , i would have one of it please ,
Have you ever engraved a saxophone? It must be much harder and involve far more skill to work on curved metal? Your engraving on the plate was exquisite!
Of course it's hand engraving. The tool is the same one you'd use in a wooden push handle or one tapped by a hammer, and it's guided entirely freehand.
Would love to use this plate in my press and stamp it in gold and then burnish it. It would look fantastic but you would need to engrave it backwards for my press. Take a look at my press at work search Saville and otley
@Drkstar4life i dont think we live in the same country, so i dont know what shops you have near you, but if you spend a little time online you could find a power engraver and do it yourself, takes some practise and time thou, but i think in your case its worth it. i hope you find a way to honor your best friend :)
For those of you who don't know, Sam Alfano is one of the most talented craftsman at his trade. Very few reach his level of expertise and quality.
Well a CNC machine can.but then it's cheap cheesy and not artistic
At using a machine?
@@dbobocRight? ...
Here's without a machine; ruclips.net/video/UiLLaYPf5ZM/видео.htmlfeature=shared
now THAT'S skilled workmanship, something to be proud of.
I apply transfer wax (beeswax & tallow) to the surface which gives me something to draw through with my pencil. It's simply a waxy surface that allows me to see my pencil lines. :)
