  • One of the most beautiful destinations in the Gurgltal is the Fernsteinsee with the ruins of the former Sigmundsburg hunting lodge.
Fernsteinsee is located at an altitude of 934 m in a wonderfully idyllic location at the entrance to the Gurgltal and directly on the Fernpass road. Fernstein Castle is dreamily and romantically situated on the western shore of the lake. Today, the 14th century castle houses a hotel, which also includes a 50,000 m² leisure park with numerous secluded spots.
And the Bavarian King Ludwig II valued the area around Fernsteinsee very much. He often came here from Linderhof or Hohenschwangau Castle to enjoy the seclusion and tranquility of the lake. In winter, he liked to travel with torches on a ceremonial sleigh and even had two rooms reserved as "secret quarters" at Fernstein Castle.
Until 1856, the old Fernpass road ran directly around Fernstein Castle, then it was widened and the section rerouted. A large bridge was also built, over which the road still runs today. The old, former pass road is now fully available to hikers and walkers. On leisurely boat trips you can explore the entire lake and have a wonderful swim on warm summer days.
The Fernsteinsee is a special place for all holidaymakers in the town of Nassereith in the Imst outskirts. Many stories and legends circulate about the former Sigmundsburg hunting lodge and Fernstein Castle, where kings and emperors can stay overnight today as they did then. Anyone who loves clean, crystal-clear water will find a real treasure here.
For divers who prefer cool, refreshing water, there are many fish to discover in the underwater world. Since the lake is privately owned, diving is reserved for hotel guests. Tourists can enjoy the many colorful sides of the small lake, but to obtain a diving permit you must be a guest there for at least 2 nights. And if you are looking for relaxation, you will get your money's worth on a bike tour around the dreamy Fernsteinsee.
