I've had the privilege of watching Dante (and many other famous glass artists) work during a Glass Weekend at WheatonArts near me in South Jersey.

You are correct. Here in the Northwest some artists are using wood paddles to flatten stuff as one would normally use cork. I checked with Dante and they are indeed cork.
