1:37 12v is still kinda hit-or-miss as far as supported Power Delivery (PD) protocols. Chinese manufacturers and PD protocol chips finally supporting 12v instead of skipping it is more the “ah ha” moment. China was pretty happy with QC and slow to adopt PD, which was more of a Western and Apple Computer format. I suspect the reason 12v finally began wide support is that 48v also had to begin support for the 240-watt protocol for laptops and other power hungry devices.
Right, the small chip is not a buck converter but a trigger board and for 12V it must be made sure that the USB supply supports it because 12V is optional, whereas 5, 9 and 15V are standard. Luckily all my USB-C power supplies have it, even the cheapest Aulex 25W at 1.59 euro from the bundle deals.
I must be too old! I've been licensed since 1992 and I've tried to keep up with new stuff hitting the ham radio community and market. Of the stuff Josh presented in this vid, I marginally understood half of what the devices are and what they do, but the rest are WAY over my head. Especially the Boondock Echo. Josh may as well have been speaking Mandarin for all I understood. Oh, well. I guess I should be happy making contacts on conventional analog and digital modes. I'm 73 YOA and not too much longer for this world. Happy hunting to all the guys and gals in this great community. Best to all and 73, Marc (N1QGM)
Like Josh said -- you don't need new gadgets to have fun. Just go have fun. But if you'd ever like to know more about how it operates, we'll be here, ready to help.
1:43 That is not a buck converter - it's a device that speaks to the USB C PD power supply or battery and negotiates 12 volts output if it is available. It's called a USB PD trigger. So for it to work you have to make sure that your supply can deliver 12 volts. I have a PD battery that delivers 12 volts and a power supply that only delivers 5, 9, 15, or 20.6 volts - not 12 volts; I got a USB PD trigger set for 15 volts max so that I can charge my HT from both the 15 volts from the power supply and the 12 volts from the battery. A buck converter would need to be quite a bit bigger not least to dissipate the heat that it would generate.
Also be aware that USB-C triggers generally select the requested voltage directly from the power supply OR the next LOWER voltage. So if you have a 12V trigger on a PD supply that supports 5, 9, 15 and 20, it shoulld select 9V since 12V isn't available.
I had a 128gig SD in my Cardputer, I had to shrink the partition down to 32gigs for it to read it... Formated as fat32... Then it was able to read and store files on it. It's pretty neat gadget and the price was pretty good also. Thanks for another great video
Speaking of small and easy to get started with Meshtastic devices, you should a review of the Seeed Studio T1000E Card tracker. It's a 40$ node which fits into your pocket (Smaller than the Muzi works node) and is waterproof (I swear I'm not sponsored).
I just got 2 of these because they looked cool, but I'm NGL, I have no idea what to do with them. It'd be AWESOME if Josh would do a review and maybe some projects with them!
@@HamRadioCrashCourse There’s a guy who used the pogo pin charging to make a deployable SAR kit where all the card trackers slot into place using the magnets.
The Lilygo T-Deck can do a lot if not all of what the cardputer does even though it's kinda advertised primarily as a Meshtastic/LoRa device, I think even more thanks to its full color touch display's ability to show higher resolution and full color graphics. The same boot manager you showed off is available for it, you should try it out. I've seen the T-Deck even do a full on VNC computer remote session, and NES emulation, botj of which I personally think are kind of nuts for an ESP32-S3.
Soon ill be having a mini puttikeg cw trainer, till then i mainly carry a flip zero daily to entertain me. I mainly keep lockpicks on me as part of my EDC.
That Boondock device looks cool and has some real potential. I often dream what AI could do in the contesting community and then come to the realization none of that technology will probably be implemented in my lifetime. Lol.
The future is now @AA0Z! And the only thing keeping us from releasing an upgraded transcription feature that improves accuracy is a how-to video. As for contesting -- the big issue there is that we weren't getting callsigns with high enough accuracy. We've dramatically improved that with the latest transcription models. If it works in the field as we hope it will, turning the transcriptions into an exportable Cabrillo file format should be trivial.
Hi: I'm looking to add a Mobile Base Transmitter to my car but it's a small car with not much dash space. I was thinking of purchasing a unit with a removable baseplate, baseplate attached to the left side of the rear-view mirror and the main unit underneath the driver seat with a cable run through the trim between them. I really like the FT-891 but it doesn't have a removable faceplate. Can anyone recommend a good unit with this feature?
Hi Josh, All great gadgets. Shame the Inovato Quadra will no longer be available. If you want to build a KK5JY Loop on the Ground receive antenna, I have some extra of the binocular toroids he used and can send you one. You and the family stay safe. 73 WJ3U
@hamradiocrashcourse Josh. As someone who’s semi electrically inclined, but still not sure on how to do some things safely, I don’t have an HRO type store in Houston where I can walk into and buy what I need and they can tell me exactly what I need and how to hook it up. Houston just doesn’t have it. In this instance, it’s connecting a lifepo4 battery to a radio. Do I fuse, do I need a gadget or two in between? Clueless. Can’t find a video on this topic. Can ya help if ya know a video or perhaps somebody who can make one 😂 😜 Thx so much always. Moses
Haven’t used it nearly as much and I thought it would. The retro side of it took me long enough to setup I got kind of frustrated. It’s a decent VNC pi client though.
Hey this was my recommended video and I'm here just a minute after upload lol😂 I feel super special 😂
Hope you enjoyed it!

The J pole cloth attena also has a GMRS option too, works great!
The Fara-J is available in 6 meter and GMRS now also. I got mine about a month ago but haven’t had a chance to use it yet.

Great list! Think you could run direwolf on the little cardputer? That would be an epic little computer to use for a temporary digipeater for aprs.
Question? Could you run Meshtastic on the card computer?
I don't think it's really accurate to use the word "buck converter" in the context of a 12v PD spoofer. No transformation occurs in the dongle.

Josh, any thoughts on pull-behind backpacks and packable ladders for us back and knee injured folk to hang our antennas when out and about?
I’ve never tried those! They look very effective though!
I REALLY want a Boondock echo, but man that price is steep.
What HPG bag do you use?
SAR bag
