I am a male from Egypt, but I have been living in Seattle, USA, since 1980. I have also spent some years living in London, Nottingham, and Birmingham. I wanted to reach out to you to express my admiration for your videos about Egypt. Your personality shines through your videos, and they are a pleasure to watch. I appreciate that you have an open mind about the country and its people, and you showcase Egypt in the best possible way. Your video editing skills are excellent, and you manage to keep your videos exciting, regardless of their length. Keep up the great work!

I've been to Sharm multiple times and just love it. I want to add a comment about the amazing friendliness and hospitality of the Egyptian people you will meet. Yes it will be predominately men, however as a solo female traveller they are always nothing but kind and respectful. Also, seeing how they interact with parents, and especially the children is fantastic. If you have young children don't be concerned by this familiarity - which can include picking the kids up and showing them a lot of positive attention. It's just the way people are in Egypt, and the Middle East in general..... kind, caring, respectful, and so very generous.
Btw the vendors will harrass you, but this has been their way of working for more than a hundred years (read Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile which also mentions it and was published in 1937).
For me - the #1 draw is the underwater world... however Sharm has so much to offer as your video shows.

      Are there many restaurants

    • @sarahwalton2662
      @sarahwalton2662 Год назад +14

Kam: yes there are. I'm going to break this down below into outside, and inside, of the resorts. Here you go:
Outside: There are two main pedestrian areas which have many restaurants and fast food chains (KFC etc.). These are Naama Bay, and Soho Square.
The old market (souk) also featured in the video will also have cafes etc which are likely a bit more 'local' in feel.
There is also a huge restaurant/cabaret venue in the El Hadaba area of Sharm called Alf Layla Wa Layla (1001 Nights..... remember Ali Ba Ba and the 40 Thieves?). As well as food they have entertainment including belly dancing, and the whirling dervish etc.
Again do do back to my point above that when you're out and about you will likely be approached multiple times by restaurant, shop, stall vendors to go into their place. The best way to let this not annoy you is to make the decision not to be annoyed (haha) It is perfectly okay to just keep walking past, even if someone is still talking to you, and don't engage if you're not interested. You can even add a polite 'La Shukrahn' if you like (no thank you in Arabic).
Also, taxis to and from each location will be needed and are not the cheapest. If you don't want to barter/haggle a price then have the hotel reception to arrange a hotel for you, and you can arrange with the driver a pick up time and place for them to collect you and rake you back to the hotel. Bear in mind the price you pay outbound is only one way (I.e. you will have to pay the same amount on the return journey).
In the hotel: will have one or more buffet style restaurants for your All Inclusive package. They usually have a wide range of food and desserts, and alcoholic and non-alcohic drinks (hot and cold). Some hotels are better than others when it cones to quality and taste of food. Although you can never go wrong with Middle Eastern dishes. Most also have 'snack' and 'beach' bars open throughout the day. Snack bars often have cakes, sanwiches, ice-cream, and hot/cold beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Beach bars do chips/fries, burgers, pizza etc; again with the full range of drinks.
Most hotels also have a few separate 'A la carte' restaurants which are typically a dedicated type of food. E.g. Italian, bar-b-que/grill etc..
Most All Inc. Packages allow one or some visits to the A la carte restaurants for free during your stay. But outside of that you will have to pay. Do check what your All Inclusive package includes for visits to these as it varies from hotel to hotel, or chain to chain, and how long your stay is. For example, on a 7 night stay one hotel may only allow you a single free A la carte restaurant visit to one of their restaurants and you will have to choose which; whereas another hotel may have a better deal where you get at least one free visit to each of the resort's a la carte restaurants during your stay. The a la carte restaurants need to be booked in advance and this can be done at somewhere in the hote reception or your hotel room phone.
Honestly though... personally I have found that the food isn't really that much better than the All Inclusive buffet at the a la cartes i have visited. The only difference really being the table service, more intimate setting, and food presentation on the plates. But that's just my opinion/experience :)
Finally, do expect to come back from your holiday a few pounds heavier 😁😁

In Egypt or Turkey or many places outside the EU the best bet is to simply buy a local SIM card or a tourist SIM, which is preloaded with loads of data and is usually not very expensive. You can get them at arrivals in the airport or in some shops. Turkcell is best in Turkey, Vodafone usually best coverage in Egypt. I think in Egypt it is something like £7 for 10GB or £15 for 30GB which you'll probably never use even over a couple weeks of holiday. Reason why this is so great in Egypt is because Uber exists! In Hurghada, Cairo, Alexandria and a few other spots you can hit up an Uber- no haggling, no arguing or tips- just cheap taxis. Sharm has yet to have Uber so that's a shame but wait and see.

We're actually in Sharm right now. This is our second year here. My husband and I were laughing at the "do not enter a shop, or the door will be closed and the family will come down." This happened to us last year- we entered a shop after being asked to go in, and he closed the door behind us. It was a bit scary, but he made us tea and showed us just about everything for sale in his shop. In the end, to make a getaway, we bought some (horrendously overpriced) camel milk moisturiser and a massive bag of loose tea leaves. The forceful approach is a bit much, but we learned our lesson and won't be entering this year 😂.

My brother and I weren't very old (I think I was about 8 and my brother 6) but my parents were forceful enough that after an hour, they not only let us go without buying anything, they took us on a small tour of the local mosque by way of apology. We had a boat trip to Tirana Island in 2015, when it was still open to public, we stoped for snorkeling at almost the same spot as you did near the shipwreck, and my little sun was given a chance to drive the boat a bit on the way back ;) Our hotel was the one with a lighthouse 11:06 , it was very inexpensive, but surprisingly good, and convenient (small territory, few steps only to the beach), and more importantly, it had one of the best coral reefs in Egypt. Later that hotel was sold to Sunrise hotels chain and now its name is Sunrise Remal Beach. We moved to Australia in 2017, and Egypt is out of reach for us now. Literally crying :(

I was in Sharm a few years ago and loved it. I wouldnt do AI again though. The hotel i was in was full of Russian people who would fill their plates with food, take 2 bites and put in the rest in the bin, then go up again and do the same. I did a day diving, just trial dive day, but that was incredible.

I stayed at the Oasis Blue Bay end of November and Start of December for a bit of Winter sun and Diving. I think your review is spot on. I fell in love with the sea there and loved the resort. I travelled to Dahab diving and found everything very friendly and want to return. However, my Mrs has a different story. I am 6ft 5 and a big guy. I have no problem with tipping and generally having a good relationship with people so everywhere i went i felt safe and had the best time. My Mrs is also chatty, and everyone loves her but in Sharm she was very much treated like a second-rate person. She found the fact no-one would talk to her very irritating and even ordering food they would speak to me and i had to direct their eyes to her to get them to even acknowledge her existence which for western girls is a problem. In the Blue Bay itself they quickly got to know her and did things correctly and all the guys where awesome but outside of the resort it was a different story. The net result was she stayed in the resort having spas and stuff and felt safe. I would go out diving mostly in the mornings for a few hours, so we had a great time but regretfully she does not want to go back. I am gutted so now looking at returning with perhaps some mates for a dive only holiday. Such a shame. BTW. The Airport is a Sh1t hole. That part does also need sorting and perhaps all the young men walking round with Guns in the airport and at the borders need toning down. We had a armed police escort to Dahab part way which I can help think was OTT. Especially as we had nothing on the way back so think they are doing it for show but it kind of has the opposite effect. I hope they do sort it as 90% of the people there are awesome, and they deserve more visitors.

    • @flyingmortgageman

@@LilyGazou What a coincidence that I was watching this Video and been longing to go back Diving again and a shark attack happens. I have “Swimming with Sharks” in particular Hammer Head sharks on my bucket list. I was not lucky enough to see any on my 10 dives there. Do I think its dangerous? Sharks swim next to people all the time and shark attacks are rare. I understand 10 people where killed by dogs in the UK last year but it does not stop me from walking out my front door or cycling on the heath where dogs run around. I think the bigger issue is people feeding sharks to make them come over for a shark selfie and that is perhaps what is happening in certain areas and then sharks start thinking humans and food is linked? My Mrs is scared of sharks as she is from SA so has seen Great Whites which I think we are all scared of? When we free dived together once or twice we saw large fish in the deep blue which spooked her but she kept diving as the rewards of swimming with the fish on the corral reefs is worth it.

I visited Sharm last year, lovely. The only disadvantage (for me) is going out as a solo black woman, some traditional Egyptian hotels do not even allow single women.
Yes the red sea is to me one of those places I feel disadvantaged but still love. Negotiating prices in Egypt is a must and it needs patience. Just very close to that mosque, I got ripped off $70 for a few grams of incense and a few grams of spices, I can`t even figure out how the guy caught me off guard, thinking of it today, I could kick myself.

Worst holiday I ever had was at Sharn el sheikh. Was pestered as soon as we left the airport & everytime we went into town. 5* hotel and still we all ended up with food poisoning. Don't go no matter how cheap it appears it's not worth it.

@@WalkWithMeTim..if you peek.inside the 5* hotel kitchens..you'll get a massive shock..they have no food safety practices. Cooked fish kept next to raw chicken out in the open for hours..hence why the public never ever see kitchens in these countries..same in Turkey and Greece sadly.
