  • We get this question A LOT and I'd love to share with you what we have learned over the last five years of homesteading that's allowed us to balance the homestead and homeschool (as well as life in general) in a way that decreases the incidence of burnout.

    UPDATE: We are also in a 45% Risk for "Very Large to Giant" Hail!
    Today (Wednesday the 8th of May) our farm is in a 10% Hatched risk for tornadoes (if you don't know what that means, it means there is a 10% risk of seeing a large, damaging tornado within 25 miles of any given point). I'd love it if you would extend your prayers and positive thoughts toward our farm! Everyone stay safe! ♥

    I really appreciate videos like this. I feel like the media platforms display homesteading as sunshine and rainbows and collecting eggs and picking vegetables. There’s so much more that goes into it. There’s tears and shed blood and hard days. Sometimes animals have to be put down. Sometimes the garden sucks and doesn’t grow much at all that year. Sometimes it’s a drought and there’s no grazing grass. It’s not for wimps. And it takes a village to keep it going. ♥️

    Hear, hear! I have such delight seeing your view of farm life - Not in a covetous way, but in a way that shows one template of something that is working well for one family and is inspirational to see successes and learning experiences and always the willingness to shift focus and try something differently. There is very little I have not said dozens (or hundreds?) of times on previous videos but the information and experiences you share are so valuable to US, too! Literally every video has either made me giggle, smile, or even tear up - Knowing y'all are only a few years older than my oldest son and living THE BEST LIFE, fulfilling your dreams together just brings so much joy to my heart! What you choose to show on video is real life, complete with natural cycles and consequences (not all consequences are bad)... Genuine. You could cut out all the "oops" or "imperfect" spots and display some sort of artificial perfection, but you choose to share (at least some) of the imperfectly perfect moments and plenty of oopses because they're real and it doesn't take away legitimacy of the moment. I'm so happy I stumbled into that Fermented February collaboration and found your channel! #SNSPeepsForever

      Okay that hashtag is great!! HAHA I love it. And I appreciate you all so much. It's a lot easier to RUclips and show life when it doesn't have to have a script or always work out beautifully. I hope you all stay safe, and the hail doesn't do any damage. Learning new things comes down to muscle memory. Our brain has to figure that process out along with the rest of our body to get quicker at what we're doing. We only realise something has become easy when we're thinking of something else whilst doing it. Until then, being kind to ourselves gets us there quicker.

    I've commented before...A LOT... hopefully I'm not repeating myself. I'm homesteading at age, well 60 now, and I constantly feel like I'm racing the clock. Not enough years left to accomplish all that I want to do, lol and not nearly enough money! But you, Heather are such a joy to watch, you remind me that it's ok not to do ALL the things, take failures with a grain of salt, when things don't go right then go left so to speak.
    I love the way you just try things, you do your research but you don't OVERTHINK it. Just your easy going demeanor puts me at ease and THAT helps me be more productive!
    This I KNOW I've said before but worth repeating "A day without Heather is a day without sunshine"

    I think what a lot of folks forget to do, is after they plant their garden, they tend to think it's got to be all or nothing when it comes to weeding it, or fertilizing, or dealing with Pests. And that's fine if you have the energy for it, but I'm here to tell you now it's going to burn you out faster doing that and it's going to make gardening more of a chore than a pleasure.

Community is super important in this lifestyle. There’s only so much you can do GREAT. Find people that excel in the areas you may be weaker and either learn from them or buy/barter from them. There’s only so many hours in the day and it shouldn’t be stressful. ❤

    Great video Heather, wish this homesteading lifestyle would have happened for me when I was much younger. I think homeschooling is the answer to well rounded, happy children growing into responsible, caring adults…you are the BOMB Heather, now I have to go can fiddleheads because they are in season….brussel sprouts in the garden tomorrow! Fiddleheads can’t wait!

      We use rabbit most of the time now but we make chicken/rabbit dumplings a lot like this with carrots and fresh dill when available: www.spendwithpennies.com/old-fashioned-chicken-and-dumplings/

    Thank you for touching on how no farm can be self sufficient unless you can produce, grain,hay and fossil fuel yourself and most of us can’t. I laugh when people say they are self sufficient, all we can do is the most we can with our resources and then support other farms to fill in those gaps. No one can you do it all alone, it takes a village ,🌻

    This is advice I needed to hear and probably should rewatch to make sure it sticks! I am having a lot of anxiety because i am completely going a different route this season (weed fabric) due to a needed knee replacement. I don’t know why we tell ourselves shifting gears / processes is failing. I am reminding myself I may learn some new things and that doing something is still succeeding.

    I am hoping all is well with you and yours and the terrible weather predictions don't come true. I live alone and don't have any regular helpers. In a total emergency I do have a couple friends that could come milk goats or even take them to their house to care for if I was down for a long period of time. In the meantime I try to focus on the 3 most important things that really need to get done today, from the never ending list. And sometimes I just slap things together and call it good enough. Besides nearly 100 chickens, a dozen goats including 2 in milk, gardens, I grow plants to sell along with veg and eggs at the farmers market. I also make goat milk soap, lotion and face scrub to sell and work a part time job. Some days there is just not enough time or energy!

    I wasn't able to finish all of the video yesterday, so I'm coming back to finish. Apologies for the second comment. I do have a question. When this all started for you and your husband, did you have any experience? Or teaching yourselves as you go? I'm teaching myself as I go through this journey. It's just myself and 3 boys, and to have the extra boost in confidence just feeds to my hungry of wanting this life. Knowing I can do it. I absolutely love that you use your time to create videos. It's what has encouraged me. I started a garden this year, and I now understand the excitement you get!! And when you make these heartfelt ones like this, it helps me even more.

      We have learned as we go! I did have horses and chickens and a garden at my dad's house growing up but I had very minimal involvement with those things. RUclips has been a valuable resource and it feels awesome to be part of that !

    Well done Heather!! This was so real and honest. I think you are so authentic in ALL your vids!! Your community here loves and thanks you! One thing you didn't really touch on is ... What happens if you or Levi get super sick?? I'm asking this only because right now I have a bad case of bronchitis, and haven't even been to my little plot in the community garden. I know it needs to be weeded and such, but just can't right now. What happens for you??

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Месяц назад +2

      I have a video that I took when we both were really sick one time. We do the bare minimum and make up for anything that that happens later on. Mulching heavily helps keep weeds to a minimum and the kids would weed for me if needed. Take care of yourself and any critters you have that depend on you, the garden is one of those things that it is possible to ignore for a time and then give it some extra TLC when you feel better!

    Thank you so much for this video. I have 3 small kids and one I'm supposed to be homeschooling and I'm just having such a hard time prioritizing that and getting it fit into my schedule. I'm real big on my kitchen being cleaned first and foremost. I keep telling myself, that shouldn't be a priority but homeschooling should. I have also been trying to incorporate homeschooling in our day to day activities. I'll get playdoh out and ask my 5 year old what does playdoh start with. I've gotten hooked on phonics for him, etc. I'm doing okay but not doing as much as I'd like for him. I'm working on telling myself it's okay that my house is a mess I have other priorities that I need to address first. Oh... and potty training my others, ugh. lol I have a 5, 3, and 1 year old.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Месяц назад +1

      at 5 years old the learning should be in short spurts and probably more learning while playing than anything. You will find a balance! The first one is hard to figure out the rhythm.

    #2 I'm looking for a video where you talk about extra teets and how you handle that

    I definitely have a lived in home too! I do have a question (a little unrelated to this video). I live in a small house as well. I am about to start canning and noticed that your canned items are shelved in front of a window. Has that effected them? Because that will be about my only option, and I've been panicking about it a little for some reason. It does not get harsh light, but it does get light.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Месяц назад +1

      Direct light doesn't ever hit that shelf. Indirect is fine, you can hang a curtain over the shelf though for extra protection!

    Hey fam… kidding season is here and this is my first with goats. Question… does it take awhile for the mother goat to let the kids feed from her? Her utter is super full but the kids are small and they need to eat. Any advice I’d appreciated 👍🏾

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Месяц назад +2

      They should eat within the first hour and moms udder will soften some..make sure the teats are not plugged. Little babies won't be able to drain her fully, but you'll see them swallowing and the udder will soften up some and they should be using the bathroom
