  • This Jewish History lecture is the second talk from David Solomon’s six-part overview series. The lecture examines the first five hundred years of the common era (0 to the year 500 or 3760 to 4260 in the traditional Hebraic calendar), known in Jewish History as The Talmudic Period.
This period covers the destruction of the Temple by the Romans; the failure of the Bar Kochba Revolt which destroyed any serious hope of independent Jewish Statehood; the transition to Babylonia as the centre of the Jewish world; and the formation of the Talmud - the most influential Jewish document after the Bible.
The Talmudic period is divisible into two distinct sub-periods:
    · The Tannaitic, and
    · The Amoraic.
In exploring the Tannaitic Period, David discusses the history of the first century, leading up to the destruction of the Second Temple as well as:
    · The census revolt
    · The founding of Tiberias
    · Helena of Ediebene/Philo of Alexandria
    · Greek-speaking Jewish tensions
    · Caligula’s idol and the delegation of Philo of Alexandria
    · The Great Revolt of 66CE
    · Zealots, sicarii, and others
    · The Kohanim and the Idumeans
    · The arrival of Vespasian and Titus
    · Agrippa II and Berenice
    · Tiberias Julius Alexander (nephew of Philo of Alexandria)
    · The establishment of Yavneh
    · The destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple
    · The last stand at Masada
    · The influence of Yavneh and the education and rise of Rabbi Akiva
    · The second Jewish revolt
    · The third revolt led by Bar Kochba and supported by the elderly sage Rabbi Akiva, ending in the tragedy at Beitar
    · The renaissance of the rabbis
    · The students of Rabbi Akiva
    · The end of the Tannaitic Period with the compilation and editing of the Mishnah by Rabbi Yehudah HaNassi.
David then explores the Amoraic Period beginning with the career of Abba Arikha (Rav) and the transition of the centrality of Jewish life to Babylonia, which included:
    · The academy of the Sidra
    · The establishment of the Mishna as the central curriculum of study
    · Sura, Nahardea, and Pumbedita
David discusses the development of the Talmud during this period and the creation of the Gemara, an analytic exploration of the Mishna, and:
    · The importance of the Braitta and the Tosefta
    · The Palestinian Talmud (Talmud Yerushalmi)
    · Rav Ashi, Ravina, and the sealing of the Babylonian Talmud (c.500)
He also examines anti-Jewish persecutions in Babylonia at the end of the Talmudic Period and the independent state of Mehoza.
As always, David puts these elements of Jewish History into a broader framework of world history, looking at:
    · The rise of Christianity
    · The division of Rome
    · The adoption of Christianity by Constantine
    · Julian the Apostate
    · The fall of Western Rome and the rise of Eastern Rome as Byzantium
    · The Persian Empire
    · Zoroastrian religion
    · Gnosticism, Neo-Platonism, and other major ideas.
This is an edited lecture of the live talk given in 2020 for Chabad South Africa and Daminyan Shule in Melbourne. It is the second part of David’s six-part overview series of Jewish History. It will be publicly available on March 17th.

Hi , could you please tell me which Torah and Tanakh you follow
Thankyou, I am a Christian ( or hope to be called worthy) and have learnt quite a bit from David, I like the way he teaches, and I don’t trust the history written by catholic, Anglican, Muslim conquerers, or I guess what you could call modern Greco Roman, I don’t believe zRome stopped at 475, just become very manipulative and added more tribes to itself, King Charles himself said he is related to atilla the hun,,but what David is teaching seems to ring true. I don’t believe nothing exploded, become a rock, miraculously came to life, turned into an ape, then us, this is totally absurd, and there is not one single change of a kind to back this up, but there is massive evidence that giants existed,I would encourage people to read Richard J Dewhursts book, the ancient giants who ruled America, the Smithsonian appears to have covered up huge finds of giant bones, and Anglican / catholic princes seem to be heavily involved in freemasonry, as are Many American presidents, and Australian political figures.

The glory of the Second Temple, (though it didn’t even have the Mishkan in Holy of Holies) was to be greater than the First, because the LORD would suddenly come (visited) to His Temple in a Shechinah of body of flesh in Mashiach Yeshua, as foretold by the Prophets of Israel. אמן

It is also in this period that David didn’t mention is that he doesn’t know, so I must teach, rather remind him this is the beginning of the New Testament from the Old Testament from the sacrificial system to the forgiveness of sin through Grace, through recognition of the Messiah as prophecies in Daniel, the Psalms, Isaiah, and many others point to,for all the Bible iand all prophecy point to Yeshua , the Son of GOD and GOD’s way to restore the separation of men from GOD. Jesus death is mentioned in Josephus . GOD asked man,Abraham, to sacrifice his son Isaac and then GOD himself provided the sacrifice by the ram caught in the thicket’s and then GOD prophesied that a virgin would have a son, then Michael the Arch Angel announce to Zechariah that his wife Elizabeth would have a son in their old age, and the announced to Mary the wife of Joseph that she would have a child even though she was a virgin and to name him Yeshua(Jesus)

I praise the name of my Saviour Jesus Christ who saved a wretch like me from my sins and hell their punishment in September 1979. That was the best day of my life, the day I began to live almost because of the new birth produced by the Holy Spirit’s baptism of my spirit into His body

The law or Halacha and its interpretation and application can be questioned and debated and sometimes even corrected. We see this in action in the Oven of Akhnai. In frustration, Rabbi Eliezer finally cries out, "If the halakha is in accordance with my opinion, Heaven will prove it." From Heaven a voice is heard, saying, "Why are you differing with Rabbi Eliezer, as the halakha is in accordance with his opinion in every place that he expresses an opinion?" Rabbi Joshua responds, "It [the Torah] is not in heaven" (Deuteronomy 30:12). He responds in this way because the Torah, which was given by God to mankind at Sinai, specifically instructs those who follow it that they are to look to the received Torah as their source and guide. The Talmud asks how God responded to this incident. We are told that upon hearing Rabbi Joshua's response, God smiled and stated, "My children have triumphed over Me; My children have triumphed over Me."

When did the Judaic literature moved from Aramaic to Hebrew. Is there Hebrew based preserved old scriptures texts. Did the Greek translated old testament from Aramiac or old Hebrew…?
Good lectures. My question how much of these details can be confirmed by other sources of the time… there’s allegation I read that the Judaic history is written by Jewish people… I am really interested in that history and separating myths from reality.
    Many thanks again.😊

One thing for sure, their claim that Moses gave them the Oral law (which cannot be called Torah) is a Lie,
When the name Israel is mentioned it is connected with the Ark of the Covenant, not the temple but a deviation, especially after the Ark was removed by Jeremiah before the ist temple destruction , the second temple was biuld specifically for the manifestation of the Messiah , after which it was destroyed rather taken down , Today the word Israel goes with the Ark as it was from the beginning ,to say where the Ark is there is the Israel into the future & where the temple is there is the Apostasy,, After the Macabees things get less intreasing, more pollitics than substance (spiritual) just as any other kingdoms,

So Josephus was a traitor, but BenZakai wasn’t, he actually is a hero in rabbinic world, never mind names such as rabbi Akiva (a false prophet) and Bar Kochba (false messiah), that caused the most horrific slaughter of nearly million and final slavery of Jewish people. Yeshua warned: “I came in the Name of the Father and you wouldn’t receive Me, but when the other will come in his own name, him you will receive…” and we did.
