- Taking care of historical collections comes with a lot of responsibility - not just preserving them for future generations, but making sure they're available to people in the here and now.
Meet Gary Brannan. As Keeper of Archives and Special Collections at the Borthwick Institute for Archives at the University of York, he's part of a team caring for a vast collection of historical material. The oldest document in his care dates back to the 11th Century, and more is being added all the time.
A major part of Gary Brannan's work is helping people access the archive's collections: from senior international researchers working on a major book about history, to York undergrads preparing an essay, or even locals researching their family. Whatever they need - remote digital access, or help interpreting an old text - Gary is there to help.
"There's nothing nicer when you find that something that you've brought in or cared for or provided access to, or your team has provided access to has informed major works," says Gary. "I think that's brilliant."

Amazing to see what everyone's favourite Gary Brannan gets up to in his day job.
Absolutely. I did a RUclips search of his name to find something silly I had in mind, saw this and immediately watched it. From what snippets we get on TechDif, it sounds interesting, and it's great to get more in-depth on that. Fascinating stuff that he is very well-spoken about.

I can only imagine what goes through the minds of the 17 people unfamiliar with TechDif that read all those comments about everyone's favourite Gary Brannan, Gary Brannan.

I'm one of those 17, but it's nice to see everyone in the comments so wholeheartedly supportive of this knowledgeable professional who does such useful archive work and also apparently other things not appearing in this video involving... red shirts and Wikipedia controversies? @@bricabroccoli He's been part of a modestly successful comedy group, "The Technical Difficulties" aka TechDiff, since uni. Their most famous show, 'Citation Needed', was a panel show where they joke about Wikipedia articles. One of the other members is infamous for always wearing red t-shirts.

Tom Scott needs to do a 'Plus' video where he goes to Uni York under some archival premise where Brannan stays in character. Being on Brannans turf, the in jokes, the straight faces, it would be brilliant.

Yes! Honestly the show was a lot of laughs but the information those guys know and can talk about is just so fascinating
Every time one of them gets a chance to talk about something he is particularly interested in and therefore knows way more about than the average person, it’s a joy to listen to.
I saw the episode with the "Clunk clunk archivist mode activated, everyone shut up, I know the answer" just the other day, but Gary was way less sharply dressed in that one.
Don't forget that in one of Tech Dif, it was mentioned that he lives in history.
I will admit that I clicked this for Gary,but unironically his job seems incredibly interesting,he's my favourite Gary Brannan even more now.
Anything related to archeology and sociology are fascinating. It's the most interesting kind of introspection of the state of humanity, since you get to look back through the veil of time and gain an understanding of how society functioned, how the world was, hundreds and even thousands of years ago. Of course, you do need to do your studies to equip yourself with the relevant mental tools to correlate a bunch of documents with each other, figure out who wrote what and when, if there are corroborating texts from known first-hand sources, whether the second or third-hand sources you find could be useful, and how to synthesize everything together into a workable depiction of the events of the time. There are many days where I regret not trying to major in archeology with a focus on archival work.

I must say, I found it quite relaxing to listen to Gary Brannan talk about serious topics, having seen much of the fun material he has been part of otherwise here on RUclips. Nice to learn more about his workplace and his kind of work. (Yes, I know it has been mentioned in his appearances with the Technical Difficulties episodes. I am just a tad late to seeing this video.)

I don’t know if UKRI selected Gary with the knowledge that he would bring this level of internet attention to their incredibly valuable and important video series, or if they were surprised about the Technical Difficulties fans bombarding the comments section with jokes about everybody’s favorite Gary Brannan. Either way, I hope fans of the Technical Difficulties stick around and watch the other videos in this project, as it’s a magnificent series!

I just love the fact that most of the channel's videos have like, 200 views, and then this one video about archiving work has almost 30k, just because it's everybody's favorite Gary Brannan.

We need more people like him to show that jobs that sound bland and boring can actually be very entertaining and rewarding. Also, anyone who says archivists are boring has never seen him on TechDif.
His knowledge on completely random stuff is astounding.

I’ve been curious about what Gary gets up to since the first time he mentioned being an archivist. I’m pursuing a degree in libraries and archives and it’s so cool to see what the future holds. Great video!

Recommended by the algorithm while getting my breakfast, clicked to watch Gary in a suit, found a whole channel of interesting content and have subscribed so I can find it after I finish work.
It is both quite odd, and oddly satisfying, seeing everybody's favourite Gary Brannon, Gary Brannon in his natural habitat, outside of the TechDiff space. Seeing him with a smile on that isn't preceding a witty riposte or a nob gag is hard to get used to, but also wonderful. It is also satisfying to know, seeing him rifle through the archives as he does, that I actually know a few of the things that are in there thanks to Branners' archivist tangents on TechDiff. Still, I just can't watch this video without half expecting him to look at the camera and shout, "Archivist facts! This is what you came here for!"

Honestly, this is highly interesting! Always thought that archive work was just about locking old stuff away and occasionally letting people in to sift through records. Even though I clicked on this for Gary himself, I had quite a bit of curiousity for his line of work. Always knew that there was more to it, but never actually got the chance to learn more. As a massive nerd that worked in archives & collections at my own university for a while, I enjoyed this. (I did vastly different, far less hands on work with much newer items, but loved listening in to the professionals nerd out over a new acquission or new restoration project) Whenever everyone's favorite Gary Brannan gets to engage archivist mode, my smile gets bigger because you can tell just how much he loves what he does! He's a truly awesome ambassador for the important work that archivists do around the globe. I'm also an amateur genealogist so I've sent inquiries to a fair number... some definitely have the vibe that they rather preserve the document than access to the document, so it was refreshing to hear Mr. Brannan discuss the importance of access, hands on/digital/via inquiry it doesn't matter. Information is what's important.
None of us would object to a series of everyone's favorite Gary Brannan showing some of his favorites of the archive & explaining why... just saying.

I REALLY wanted to work in this field. I used to share Gary's passion for preserving and providing access to information. But I got my undergrad, got a job, and then realized in the US there's next to no chance of making a good living in this field. This video made me miss the work I used to do.

All those years of watching Tech Dif have shown me that Gary has a great combination of humour and insightfulness, telling an obscure but genuinely interesting fact, and then following it up with a knob joke 😆 And for all the times his archivist job has been brought up in the shows, I've never actually seen what that entails, so thank you very much for making this video!

I interned for a short while at an archive a few years back, it's pretty cool.

this Gary Brannan is, in fact, my favourite Gary Brannan, and not just because of Tech Dif. It's because this is stuff that my job, at a university on the other side of the planet, can reach into the digital space and I can know, if it's available, if this archive can offer it, they will do their best to, and I can tell any given student to go looking because I know it's there, to the best of our efforts to preserve it. Super cool stuff.
