This was the best friendly tournment of the last 30 years. You had loads of players in Brazil, France and Italy who were or would become world champions, all four national teams were great.
Last England's trophy. Great team. Gazza, Beckham, Shearer, Ince... Great teams, by the way: Brazil (Romário, Ronaldo), Italy (Maldini, Del Piero), France (Zidane, Djorkaeff). Amazing times!

They played for real to win. Of course that 1966 is a official FIFA tournament, but this 1997 Tournoi de France was a top level football Challenge, harder to win than any Fuckin' Nations' League. Only 4 World Champions playing against each other. England, Italy, Brazil and France have 12 World Cup Cups combined. Well, That was a very, very tough Championship to win. Believe me. I saw ALL these guys playing for their teams e National teams during their whole careers. It was a amazing footballers' generation. Certainly better than today, that's a fact.

As much as I want to see England win a trophy in my lifetime, this trophy doesn't count. It was a friendly tournament. This tournament win didn't go into England's trophy cabinet and it didn't go into any of the England players major honours won. Edit: The Confederation Cup had 8 teams with 2 groups of 4. This friendly tournament only had 4 teams all play each other once.
This is very distinguished mini tournament I mean, it only involved 4 teams but it had the prestige that almost equalling a Euro. Furthermore, it was basically just friendlies, but all teams and all players didnt hold back and played their hearts out It's really amazing, because if they hold a mini tournament like this today, people will say "oh is it really necessary?" or "oh, just energy and time wasting friendly matches" or "are they trying to kill the players with this useless tournament?"

Also in 98 I think 🏴 deserved to go through to at least QF had numerical disadvantage for 75mins and still 🇦🇷 needed ref to disallow winning SolCampbell goal but 🏴 were cursed either way that year if they had won the cup they would've won it with the hardest knockout bracket any winner has ever had. 4 WorldClass squads all in a row. 🇦🇷 🇳🇱 🇧🇷 then 🇫🇷 in France for the final. I know they beat 🇫🇷 in France here (a very good 🇫🇷 but they were stronger in 98 with Henry Trezeguet etc...) and they won a mini league of only top teams here in 97 (plus beat 🇮🇹 to WC automatic qualfication that year as well) but that WC 98 knockout route was too much for anyone really. I know as an English person with the 4-1 vs 🇳🇱 still fresh in my mind from Euro96 I would've fancied them at the time but looking back I just think that was a great performance at Wembley 🇳🇱 weren't as strong as 1998-2001 and 98 would've been much tougher and even if 🏴 got through they then have 🇧🇷 a hard enough game alone but especially when you're knackered.

A verdade é que a França tinha um time melhor do que o Brasil. A geração da França era do mesmo nível do Brasil só que tinha um conjunto bem melhor do que o Brasil. Essa geração da França ganhou tudo o que podia (Copa do Mundo, Eurocopa e 2 Copas das Confederações). Era uma geração de grandes jogadores que brilhavam nos melhores times e campeonatos do planeta. Djorkaeff, Desailly, Candela, Henry, Pires, Trezeguet, Petit, Deschamps, Thuram, Blanc, Henry, Zidane... Todos eram estrelas internacionais da época, todos jogando nos melhores times (Juve, Inter de Milão, Milan, Barcelona...), todos sendo os melhores ou entre os melhores de suas posições no mundo na época (Zidane já era craque consagrado na Juve, Deschamps era titular absoluto da Juve, Pires era um dos melhores meio-campistas da época assim como Viera, Blanc era titular no Barcelona, Liliam Thuram e Desailly eram considerados os melhores defensores estrangeiros na Itália, só estavam abaixo de Maldini e Costacurta). Lembrando ainda que a França ainda se deu ao luxo de não levar Ginola e Cantona que eram estrelas internacionais (Cantona era goleador absoluto na Inglaterra) e mesmo assim tinha um plantel top mundial. Lembro que o Brasil não jogou bem vários jogos da Copa. Na estreia, quase que empata com a fraquíssima Escócia. Brasil conseguiu perder já na primeira fase para a Noruega!!! Antes da final, o técnico francês, Aimee Jacque, havia dito várias vezes que neutralizar o Brasil era fácil. Simplesmente ele teria que não deixar Cafu e Roberto Carlos subirem com liberdade já que eram as únicas alternativas de escape do jogo do Brasil. Hoddle should have started Owen from the first game. Then we’d have won the group and been on the easy side of the draw.
