Lengthy boring comment!: I agree being grateful is really important. I would say alongside being honest.
Being critical about our work does not feel as harsh if we are not deluding ourselves in the first place. I think that is one role of a good teacher/mentor, to keep us honest and grounded in reality. It's easy to be harsh to ourselves but being honest and fair is enough to determine the next steps.
Yes society tells us we can achieve anything if we put in enough work, but the truth is we all have strengths/weaknesses and it takes a long time figure out what they are and to start working with them, rather than against them. This is not settling for mediocrity but finding our optimal state. Being honest with our abilities and about what's driving us is super important.
On Paco De Lucia's 'turmoil'. I think society can also vilify perfectionists as unhappy and unproductive people (you didn't say that) and I don't think that's always true. Clearly Paco was a perfectionist, in that video you can hear him speak about his nails and how they have to be just right in order to play. But he was definitely productive and it's also possible he was happy in other aspects of his life (family etc) but kept that relentless perfectionism burning in his music. I know he was taken too early by a heart attack at 66. But the fact that he had such a long career in music alongside a family is proof to me that he had his head screwed on when it comes to life and the long game.

I really enjoyed reading your thoughts, and have been thinking about them often. I may want to make a video in response because I think you've said some really interesting stuff. This is something that I'm looking for when making these types of videos.

This is really important and great stuff. I've certainly been down that road, but it's one of the good things about getting older that you become more forgiving with yourself in some ways (unless you're Paco and still hate yourself :oD)
