THIS REVIEW IS SUCH A LIFESAVER!!! I’ve always wondered how these are when taken down and I’ve completely changed my mind about peel and stick tiles. Thank youuu!!!
I wonder if it might depend on the brand! I've had a peel & stick tile backsplash in my kitchen for over a year and it was the best decision I could've made. I have it around the stove as well and haven't had any issues like this video. Also tested removing a strip recently and was pleased that there was no damage underneath.
Not saying it is for everyone since maybe it won't be the choice that's best for your home, but for myself it has completely changed the look of my kitchen and held up well with none peeling off the wall, and is easy to maintain :)
@@niightwind brand please
Hello @@niightwind , what brand of them did you use? Thank you
@@REZIVORsince93Could you tell me what brand did you use
So glad someone is giving an true honest review! Thank you!
You’re welcome! Glad it was helpful. Thanks for the feedback Hollie!
Thanks for this video. I've been looking all over for people sharing their sticker tiles experience after 12+ months
This review was super helpful. I was really considering this option for my kitchen but just decided it’s a big NO! Thanks for your help 🤩
You are welcome! Glad it was able to help you! We really hoped it would have worked.
It may have hypothetically worked if you didn't purchase off of Amazon. Ours came from a home improvement store at 15$/square and have had no issues. You get what you pay for.
Maybe that would’ve worked, maybe not. But at $15 a square I paid a little less than that to have someone install real tile after I took this down. The whole idea was to try and save money. This tile had good reviews and was one of the most expensive on Amazon so it was worth the try. But i’m glad yours is working for you so far!
Me too! was just going to do this for my camper we are renovating and wanted a back splash...im glad I didnt do all the work and then it not work!!
This was the first video that popped up when I searched “best stick on back splash”. Just crushed my hopes. Thanks for saving me time, money and disappointment. Now I’ve got to learn how to install real tile 😭
Haha! Sorry about that. This one is definitely not the best stick on back splash lol. But glad I was able to save you some headache. Thanks for the feedback!
When I rented I tacked up poster board from dollar tree and then placed the peel and stick from Walmart on top of it. It looked really good and no one could tell. It took 5 minutes to pull it down and the wall had a few tack thumb tack holes. Around the edges and around outlets I used Grey tape on poster board. It stayed up 3 years until I moved. I put toothpaste in the holes. I just bought a house. I might do the same thing because I like to change it.
I think a lot of it has to do with brand of tile too. We bought "smart tiles"
brand, and it's been over a year and still looks great.
You could definitely be right! Glad you have had luck with yours! Thanks for sharing.
I do think it may be relate to the weather condition (temperature difference and humidity )?
Izzy's Mom is right. I have smart tiles also I purchased in August of 2020. They are still holding up great with my gas stove. And I cook a lot. Its September 2022 now and no wear and tear to be seen.
why not just glue the peeling areas back onto the wall
Smart tiles are AMAZING
Thank you for your honesty. You're saving others both money and time.
Thanks for posting this. My wife & I were considering this for our kitchen update but it looks like it doesn't hold up very well. Thanks for saving us the time, trouble & disappointment.
You are welcome! I am sorry to be the one to show a negative review on this. We were also really hoping it would work. After a few months I thought we were in the clear because it was all looking great still but then by month 5 I was starting to see the curling. Glad I was able to save you the headache though! Thanks for the feedback!
You gotta get the right type of peel and stick. If you get the brick style he got , then you gonna expect those peelings
I've heard that if you have a gas stove, you probably shouldn't use the peel and stick tile. But if you have an electric stove, it shouldn't be a problem. I have an electric stove and have ordered my peel and stick tiles which are scheduled to arrive Saturday. I'm very excited to see it completed! I've heard people who have had the peel and stick tiles up for years an haven't experienced any problems. Again it may just depend on if you have a gas or electric stove. Also some may have to do with the brand of tiles you buy. The ones I ordered had very good reviews. I'm optimistic that they will look great and last for years. I am sorry yours didn't hold up around the stove area as they did look wonderful when you first put them up. Just saying I've heard a lot of success stories with the peel an stick tiles so I hope this doesn't scare people away from trying the peel and stick tiles. After mine have been up for a few months, I will come back and let you know my honest experience with them. I'm new to your channel and have liked and subscribed! Looking forward to watching more of your videos! Have a great day!
Hey Lynn, I do think brand could have something to do with it but not sure if the gas vs electric stove would have made a difference for me at least as the tiles were doing this where my under cabinet lighting is as well. So I think it is more of a heat issue. Mine took about 5-6 months before they started getting bad. I look forward to hearing back from you on your experience and hope you have better luck with them! No doubt they look great! I appreciate your feedback and look forward to seeing you around on the channel!
I would not recommend anything with a sticky adhesive behind the stove. I have an electric stove/oven and used an adhesive backing with real tile because I didn’t want to mix and apply the thinset mortar. Big mistake. The backsplash is secure everywhere except behind the stove. It’s literally lifted off of the wall, luckily you can’t tell unless you get super close Lesson learned = real tile/stone + mortar
Mine is different brand and it was coming off after few weeks. I'm very disappointed and not sure it can be glued back. If the seller or manufacturer can provide some solutions, such as what kind of glue can be used to fix the problem, which would be an integrity business they are doing.
@@fym6058 I’ve had mine up for about a year now and is still great. I’m sure all brands are of different quality.
Thank you! I bought some a couple of years ago and ultimately decided not to install. Now I’m sure it will not ever make it to the wall.
In other videos I’ve seen them use plastic or card board underneath to prevent the cleanup when moving. However, I’ve only seen it done for the flooring. I feel it’s still doable for the kitchen if in a small area. More work to put up put saving money and time for cleanup.
How do you stick the cardboard to the wall so that it doesn't rip off the paint?
Mine curled like that, too, but I didn’t have it near heat. It’s fine for a small area you don’t mind replacing it, but it’s not cheap enough to put in a large area when real subway tile is so cheap to DIY.
Thanks so much!! Mine started coming off just like yours. Just needed to know how to remove it now. Just watched your video. Ty!!
My peel and stick tiles were installed in 2015 and still look great. Not sure if it has to do with brand or not but it’s been fine.
Could very well be!
Wow which brand do you have
So nice to hear someone confirm what I say to my clients. It's crap. Better to make a fake tile wallpaper and a glass cover.
Call me weird, but I kinda liked the effect left on the wall when he peeled off the tiles. It looked like a tattered old painted brick wall.
I was thinking the same thing 😁
Thank you for the honest review, I was considering peel an stick, yet NOT anymore 😊
Interesting review! I've had my peel and stick tile backsplash in my kitchen for over a year now and it has held up completely, even around the stove. Maybe it depends on the brand?
Thanks, this is super helpful. I was actually wondering if this type of backsplash was really rental friendly on painted walls as I was considering it in the kitchen and bathroom but clearly it is not so thanks for clarifying this for us all!
Thank you! You saved me from doing this because I was really considering doing my kitchen.
Thank you so much for the review. So eye opening. I am so glad I watched both videos. 🙏🏻Thanks again.
You are very welcome! I felt I needed to let everyone know my personal experience so that y'all could make an informed decision. Thanks for the feedback!
thanks so much for this!!! I was about to buy this to put in my RV behind my range and was wondering how it would hold up to frequent pasta cooking and other steemy cooking fabulousness! This saved me a LOT of time and money. I will take the extra steps and money to do actual tile backsplash bubt need to find a light one since I am putting it on an RV wall
I want to see the first video. I have a few areas that aren't near hear at all. If those are holding up I'm certainly interested in the install process.
think you saved the day was contemplating this shortcut from ceramics... God Bless! John 3:16
It would have been really nice to know how you removed it. Was that a heat gun? Was that a hair dryer? Did you have to do something to it before removing it?
All you had to do was ask. I used a hair dryer. No.
Thank you. I do appreciate videos like this. I was about an hour away from doing this in my kitchen. Thinking I will splurge and buy the good stuff. 😁
Man just answered all my questions. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the feedback!
yup same with mine, lasted about 6-8 months, this was the best of the best from Amazon....
Yup, I thought it was supposed to be the best as well. They need to tell people it cannot hold up to heat.
@@HowToHomeDIY May try the adhesive tile mat like musselbound with some mosaic ceramic tiles behind the oven to see if that lasts
Thanks for the information- I definitely avoid a disastrous project based on this video!
Good thing I saw this video. It was in my amazon cart.
That is why I did this video. Want everyone to be informed of my experience with this product. Unfortunately it was not what I was hoping for. Glad you found it helpful. Thank you for the feedback Joyce!
Good thing I saw your video . I was about to do the same stick tile in my kitchen . Post a video with real tile . Thanks
Glad it helped!
Thank you for this info. You saved me time, money and aggravation,
Glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback!
I put a peel and stick wallpaper down before I added peel and stick backsplash. The wallpaper comes off no damage the peel and stick backsplash damage but no damage to my walls because of wall paper first
WHOA! Removing them peeled the paint so bad! These def should not be sold as renter friendly.
I would tend to agree.
It was super helpful to me cause I was considering this in a country like Nigeria
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the feedback!
@@HowToHomeDIY you are welcome and thanks for your honest review.
It's such a shame you have to replace it after all your affect and expense. Did you not contact them as their is a 24-month warranty. I will just get a similar style but just over tile for a backsplash but may use adhesive as well.
Wouldn’t it work if you add on a heat resistant adhesive around the cook top?
The sticky tiles are actually more expensive than a stone backslash. At our local big box HD store, the sticky tile was anywhere from 8-12 for each 12X12 piece. I told the wife aint no way we are paying that much for glorified stickers.
The actual stone backslash was under 10 for each one..... its a little more work, but lasts for life.
I thought the sticky tiles would be 2.00 each at most.
Yeah the ones at the big box stores are very expensive. The ones I bought were about $4-5 a piece on Amazon. We ended up replacing it all with subway tiles which are incredibly inexpensive.
Yes, if done properly, the stone can last "for life," but that's the problem. You're stuck with them -- for life -- grout and all. Removing them gets messy and expensive.
You just save me a lot of money... Thanks for the review.
You are very welcome! Glad to hear it was helpful. Thank you for the feedback!
I want to ask where'd you get the underground cabinet lights? Btw the tile was nice I hate it did that thanks for the update
Thank you so much! l can see the result after few month
Not saying don’t listen to this guy but there is another instructional video on RUclips somewhere that addresses these issues, concerning how heat may make them peel and/or how to prevent these issues from happening.
So if interested in this, perhaps there is a way to make it last
I know the video you’re referencing, in fact he used part of mine in the intro of his. But he doesn’t address the issue I had. Mine didn’t peel from the wall, they peeled from themselves. There’s no way to stop that.
I bought a home with EXPENSIVE glass tile , peel and stick.. I’m currently attempting to redo my kitchen and am actually having difficulty finding out how to remove it.. he actually put grout around it.. you MUST get one that has REAL glass tiles on them../ you can tile, but if u use the good peel and stick and splurge, ull b good..
Aren't those peel and stick tiles plastic? I mean, you said they held up pretty good in the areas that didn't get hot I think.
Would a dab of super glue or epoxy under the curls work?
Thank you sir, was just about to pull the trigger on this!
You are welcome. Glad I was able to provide some insight. Thank you for the feedback!
Mine held up pretty good. It's been 3 years and ni peeling BUT i mine just turned yucky yellow and now i want to remove it but it soooooo hard to remove it.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought these are only designed to stick onto a smooth surface like existing ceramic or vinyl tile, something with a non porous surface. Drywall might work if the paint is high gloss.
Yeah, that’s not accurate. At least according to the manufacturers of these. And again, I had zero issues with it adhering to the wall, it was separating from itself.
What was the brand of tile you used? TIA
I wonder how these would work in a bathroom/bathtub backsplash.
Thanks for your review. I am recently considering adding this kind of product to my kitchen. Perhaps the problem with the ones you bought were that they came from Amazon??? Just a thought
That is possible that it was just the brand. I can't say for sure though. Some folks do seem to have luck with theirs.
@@HowToHomeDIY needless to say your video has me second guessing it which I'm grateful for because of the headache to take them off!!
@@genagx Well I don't mean to scare anyone but just make sure to do your due diligence and maybe you will find some that can work for you. 🙂
I really want to know if this backsplash is removable off of bathroom TILED walls
That is an interesting question. I definitely believe it can be removed but may leave some sticky adhesive behind if I had to guess.
wondering if maybe regional? I live in the deep south MS can go any lower or you will meet the gulf and Im worried it may be to humid for them in my area..
Use a caulking tube of gorilla glue when you install them. It works great for anyone wondering.
what was the original cost of these peel and stick tiles?? would the more expensive tiles hold up better for longer???
These were $47 per 10 sheets at the time. They were one of the most expensive ones. I can’t speak for other tiles but we didn’t cheap out on what we bought.
Stone composite peel and stick is the only way to go if you're not going full fledged tiles where heat happens often. They are not vinyl decals used here.
I place peel and stick over a year ago and it's curling off the wall where the sticky is not much sticky anymore. Unsure if now if redoing with extra glue will help or doing tile.
Awesome! Glad to hear that it helped! Thanks a lot for the feedback!
Mine didn't pull away from the wall but it turned yellow after less than a year. I have white cabinets so... yuck. The company did provide me with 4 new boxes but I've decided to just put up real tile as I don't want to have to do this again and again and again.
Yeah after they saw this video they have emailed me offering to send me new tiles. No thanks. We put real subway tile up and while it was more expensive, we dont have to worry about any of those issues anymore. Too good to be true I suppose! Thanks for your story!
@@HowToHomeDIY Where's the video? 😁
It never got made because I hate tiling. hired it out. Ironic for a DIY channel I know but we all have our tolerances 😂
@@HowToHomeDIY 🤣 It's better than drywalling.
Did the manufacturer respond to this by chance?
Thanks for the honest review
If you wash the walls with water and a few drops of laundry soap before you install it the contact paper will stick better also the paint will peel if the paint doesn’t have a good primer behind it most paint today is very cheap and will come off because of epa standards also if it’s a semi gloss it would be better if it’s flat don’t even try it
What brand are these?
you are supposed to also use a spray adhesive- it's in small print on the ad....
THANK YOU so much.
Don't put near heat source ?
The house I just purchased has these and I want to remove them 😩 Was that a heat gun or a blow dryer you were using. I’m so afraid of the outcome ugh
I used a blow dryer. I am not sure that it made a huge difference because they were still taking off some of the paint with them as you could see. Nothing that can't be fixed! If you are going to go over the wall with real tile then it isn't too much prep but if you just want to go back to bare wall then you may need to put down some skim coats with drywall compound.
But most of the stick tiles i have looked at (to buy) say do not use near heat sources
Yeah well these didn’t and still don’t. In fact they say they can be there.
Damn, I literally had subway tiles in my Amazon cart, but you changed my mind.
I've watched a lot of your videos and it's really thoughtful of you to share valuable information like this.
Thank you I was thinking about doing this...
Thank you u save me for doing temp backsplash for rental friendly
what about over a tile area?
whar glue can i use to seal down peeled up kitchen backsplash
I never found any. I tried numerous types of adhesive. Many of them caused the tile lose it's color. Acted almost like acetone on them.
@@HowToHomeDIYsomebody said to get gorilla heavy duty constructive adhesive. I need it to last four weeks and i am out of here.
@@HowToHomeDIY I put this on the wall behind the product. It appears to be the right product for the job. I just have a cheap rental. They are getting rid of us to put migrants in here because they are charging migrants by the head, plus there are grants being offered to rent to those people. So even though you put up with all kinds of crap from this landlord who fixes nothing he has nothing for regular renters who thought we had a neighborhood as opposed to a ghetto where small apartments have eleven occupants. So the landlord is thrilled with more than double the rent and this is happening all over Tennessee. So my 7 dollar gorilla adhesive is more than he would do for me. I think it looks good. I have to leave the heat off or it will peel again.
@jep1948 you can try it. If yours are lifting from the wall itself that might work but if it’s like mine where they were lifting from themselves, I didn’t have much luck with that.
I used Gorilla heavyDuty Construction adhesive this morning and now they look very good. I am pleased with the result. I had a problem where the heat vent would not close so that extra heat is what caused the problem. My neighbor fixed the heat vent and it is in a closed position. I will keep the heatvery low between now and the end of the month when i move out. I sent the new tiles back to Amazon. My eight dollar fix is way better. Sounds like your tiles were falling apart altogether, maybe that is the difference.
Thanks for your review
Ugh. Waiting for my Amazon delivery. Anyone try XUANINY Peel and Stick Backsplash Tiles? I’m using it on a small 24 in x 95 in painted MDF section. It will not be in heat but sun may hit it.
Thank you for this video
Bought them off of Amazon a few months ago and they do separate but it takes some effort And really have to be trying to damage them
Just give it a few more months. They do it on their own. In heated areas that is.
Thanks ... you saved saved me money and time ... will not be using this method.
This actually why I don’t trust other people’s examples, because they haven’t actually tested things out, the rest of those who followed their example are now in a mass because of listening to them in the first place!!!!
The wall must be treated BEFORE you apply the tile. The prep ensures you don’t tear up the sheet rock. The tile should be brushed with wall paper paste. Use steam to easily remove if you want to take it out. Use a quality product, it costs a bit more but the results are great. Do your research.
This was one of the most expensive and “highest quality” that we could find at the time. None of that was in the instructions. I just am convinced these should not be used in high heat areas. Glues do not like heat.
@@HowToHomeDIY I understand. My biggest concern is how heavy the tiles are that I bought, you know like when you put in real tile you have to use those spacers so it doesn’t slide etc. Had to learn the hard way on that, been dealing with walls that aren’t plumb, and got advice about all this from my pro-wallpaper guy that does model homes, home shows and such. I have rental homes and I can’t afford to waste money when tenants can be so rough on things. I have been experimenting, just had the bath/showers resurfaced and it looks fabulous. Everything is so damn expensive, I have to make do. Thx for your vid!
Oh God, I just applied this but a different brand
Would you recommend peel and stick for floor tiles?
All I can say is that I only noticed the problems with these in areas where high heat was.
@@HowToHomeDIY I see ..I was thinking maybe this happened because it's on the wall vertically, so it peels down...so I thought the floor tiles I'm gonna buy next week shouldn't be a big issue since it's horziontal. But thanks for the reply.
What brand did you use?
I believe it was called Stickgoo.
Thanks for the tips!
Happy to help!
Nail Glue works.
What brand are these please?
Stickgoo I think was the brand name.
how many packs were used ?
We used almost 7 packs when we installed it.
I don’t recommend it either. Mine didn’t lift but it did change colors in areas where heat is. It also left behind sticky adhesive which has been a pain to remove 🤦🏾♀️
I was so irritated, because people online were like, "use some spray adhesive on the wall before applying the peel and stick tile". I bought 3m spray and it caused some weird chemical reaction and by the next morning all of the grout lines were shriveled up 😭
Yup, I tried it as a last ditch effort. Same thing happened to mine.
can you not just use construction adhesive to help them stay on?
Tried that as a last ditch effort. It actually removed the grout coloring on the tiles if you got any on it and also did not hold.
@@HowToHomeDIY why would construction adhesive not hold it though?? might have to use some contact cement remove on the back of the tile first to get rid of the factory glue residue first...not sure..
Installing countertop on ikea
Why put plastic next to heat
Because the manufacturer said it could withstand it.
I see a lot of folks on You Tube install this peel and stick in their showers, I bet that didn't hold up long at all!
Yeah I did not put it in my bathroom so I do not know for sure but I can't imagine that is a good place for it either.
Cheap and easy solutions are just that - cheap and easy.
When you do a project - any project - one of the main thing you should consider is not how will it look when it is done, but how will it look in 1 year - 5 years - 10 years 20 years from now. That should figure into everything about the project - the style you choose and the cost of the materials. Will this style stand the test of time, or will it be the latest fad everyone is ripping out of their home 5-10 years from now? Is it cheaper, to spend more on materials and labor (maybe your own) now and do it once and quite possibly never have to do it again - or do I do it cheap and easy and redo it several times over.
If you are lucky enough to live in your forever home - the answer is always - do it right once, using superior materials, superior techniques and using a classic style that will hold up over the years.
Why couldn’t you just glue down the pieces that came up?
Ok so peel and stick is a no for me.. Thanks for the video with update
No problem! Glad it was helpful. Thanks for the feedback!
@@HowToHomeDIY i was hunting ideas
Same thing happened with mine .. I am pulling them off.
Well, renovating a small kitchen so this stick on is definitely out.
😢
That particular one you choose is not the ideal type. I don't know why but the subway tile look of peel and stick has not been masterd with quality. Verses the Planck vinyl tile look. But this was helpful though. Thanks for the video
It's too bad. It looked great while it lasted!
