Pretty embarrassing for London. Lots of other cities and countries have built infrastructure to support local cycling transportation. Look at any Dutch town. They put London to shame with their wonderfully thought out and logical underground bike hangar garages.
That's a ridiculous comparison. Amsterdam is the cycling capital of Europe. London just started. Give it time. Its like calling Amsterdam's tube system (or Randstad in general) embarrassing when comparing it to London. Each place has its strengths and drawbacks and needs to grow. Brits are too self pessimistic.

Ridiculous that in some boroughs it’s free to park a huge SUV for the year (because it happens to be a hybrid) yet you have to pay over a £100 to safely store your bike on the same road (if you’re lucky enough to have a space even)
This is one reason Bromptons sell so well. It's not just about putting them on trains, it can be about storing a bike at home. Sadly they are now priced like Veblen goods.
Agreed, Bromptons are a very good alternative solution but currently thieves are assaulting people for them due to that status they have. I wish more of those cheaper Asia clones were available here. Anything else which gets close to the Brompton in terms of practicality ends up costing the same or more....
After going nowhere due to the pandemic, I managed to save the money for the Brompton so it worked out for me. If it's not at home with me, it's locked up and work indoors to an immovable object, usually the stair railings. yes I lock it at work because I know people who had their bikes stolen from inside the work building because some nupty left the door open. Yes I have it insured, it cost the same as a small car!
Of course not. Why would they ever do that? It will highlight the chronical incompetence of government. They keep creating/importing problem to come up with solutions that will come at the cost of more taxation or the stripping away of more liberties of the citizens. That is their business model to keep their jobs. Politicians are only needed when there are problems to be solved. T keep your job you need creative ways to create problems that need (pseudo)solving. The causes of the problems are not addressed. Just like modern medicine, there is only money to be made in treating symptoms. Politicians and big pharma are criminals... all of them. Most problems stem from government intervention in the free market. THEY ARE THE PROBLEM: governments.
Bikes are more easily stolen than cars, it’s just the nature of it. Bike hangars are a quick solution, but eventually a joint police/community effort will pay off in the long run. We need both
Fully support this - I had two bikes stolen in London from outside my front door, and I was on the waiting list for a bike hanger spot for 3 years. Naturally, 3 months after I moved out of London I got an email saying a space had become available. I used to live in Tokyo and bike parking facilities were amazing. Such a shame that in London we don't do everything we can to encourage as many people as possible to cycle. It's not just the climate - it means safer streets, fewer cars and congestion, cleaner air locally and healthier residents.
the parking problem isn't really about when you're home, I've kept mine inside my home in the past, slightly annoying but its fine. Its once you're out and about or commuting there's no where safe OR convenient to lock them up. because of this I often end up walking if its local, or driving if its to far. This problem stems directly from thieves, not storage, storage doesn't even keep your bike safe. London's crime problem has got wildly out of control in the past 8 years. I suggest they work on solving that, maybe then we can start reducing the dependence on cars in London. sadly though, I don't think our problems are going to vanish any time soon... or ever tbh.
I live in the Midlands outside of even a city here. About 2 years ago two of my friends where out mountain biking rode through the local park and had a machete pulled out on them and couple thousand in bikes taken. Police did absolutely nothing even though the dudes face is clearly in video, like absolutely crisp clean imagine machete in hand. The theft of bikes is an issue UK wide. City or not. My shed got broken into for my bike a year ago that's behind a 10 foot fence, gravel driveway, flood lights and then break into the locked shed. Luckily I had two locks chaining about 5 bikes together which they tried to get at and did, but I guess I either spooked them (I was still awake and somehow didn't see them) or they figured they couldn't get it back over my gate. No amount of reasonable security stops it Bottom line is if it's not a person they don't care too badly, property is replaceable, we don't live in the US where you can defend you property to the death. You've just gotta let it get taken
Pretty easy to catch em. Just start doing "bait bikes" with trackers in them and arrest the perpetrators. After a while of doing that, word will get around and it will definitely improve the theft rates.
It's ironic that the government is encouraging cycling while we see issues like this. You can't ask people to do something without providing accessible means to safely engage it. It's ridiculous as usual.
Oooooh poor cyclists! You need to get with the program! Motorcycles have the same issues and they also get stolen but they even pay road tax! Cyclists don't obey the rules of the road either and they are constantly passing red lights, they cycle on the pavement, they cycle through pedestrian crossings,they go down one ways, they damage and scrape up cars and then run away thinking they are not liable, they instigate road rage! If you ask me, cyclists should at the very least pay road tax like every other road user ! If you want a secure place to store you bike go and pay for a gargae rather than being a cheap entitled person hating on motorist who actually pay road tax to use the road, some pay hundreds!

@@max11111able it isn't about fairness. It's about what sort of society we want to become. The US decided it wanted everyone to drive everywhere. But many see the benefits of incentivising cycling to improve traffic, air quality, and public health.
I live in the Netherlands and will share the tips that work here. The lock should be as expensive as the bike. 2 or 3 locks are normal, 1 to lock the front wheel to the frame, 1 to lock the back wheel to the frame and 1 to lock the bike to a pole or tree or fence or to another bike. If you want to put it inside and you live upstairs use the space above the stairs with a pulley system to lift the bike up above your head. Its an investment but worth it. 2-3 bikes should fit. If its very high you can get more bikes up by lifting by only the front wheel.
Unfortunately ceiling height is very low in most UK flats. I love the idea of using the space under the ceiling, but pulling the bike up is not an option that works in many UK houses.
A fellow dutch student told me that it needed to be triple-locked with two different kinds of locks. My locks (£125)costs more than my regular bike.( secondhand £50). Now the electric brompton that get's triple locked indoors. If I'm really neurotic, I can insist it goes in the office with the safe. Lol! I just lock it to the stairs at work out of everyone's way.

I work in a small supermarket branch. No space for non-folding bikes inside. At the bigger branches in the chain, you can bring your full size non folding bike indoors. people keep them under the stairs. So I have a folding bike that I keep indoors at work chained to the stairs. In case we get any unexpected visitors snooping around the back of the supermarket. ( has happened before)

They are not on the actual steps obviously....🤣🤣🤣🤣. Sadly in my tiny convenience branch, there are things(not bikes. Stuff like bins, extra baskets, stock and packaging for Deliveroo) stored on the steps which I'm assuming the fire marshal okayed. It's been there for over a year and the way how everything is stored, a particularly fat fire marshall won't be able to get through. Yeah, management never thinks about that just more profit, especially with Deliveroo. Let's just ram as much stock into a tiny supermarket as possible. I'm 16 seconds in and as a cyclist who does not live in London i can tell you 2 things. 1) this is not just a problem in London but you can buy wall mounts to store bikes in your living room, hallway etc and 2) it is much easier to move a bike around on the back wheel only. Don't try to pick it up and then walk down stairs. You will eventually hurt yourself one way or another
I do live in London and I work in a bike shop dealing with people's commuter bikes and so I feel I am well placed to explain to you why what you've said is totally innacurate. 1: most people's commuting bikes (or bikes that they use as their only vehicle) have full mudguards and, as such, it's not possible to wheel them down stairs on the back wheel without causing damage. 2: there is not space in most flats (which is what London is mostly comprised of) to mount bikes on the wall and, furthermore, doing so is deceptively consuming of space, often at the expense of a kitchen table, sofa or desk (especially pertinent as most people have of late been encouraged to work from home). 3: Seeing as you don't live in London your opinion is totally irrelevant and offers no insight whatsoever into this growing problem.

Amsterdam talking here.. I know London is just catching up however you can learn from the Dutch about what does and doesnt work. What works: Cheap bikes Good locks Swapbike (bike subscription) Expensive bikes with GPS tracking ( e.g. Van Moof) which have there own team to localize stolen bikes Insurance for expensive bikes Undergound bicycle parking Etc... What is being suggested here, the type of storage, will NOT work. Have you ever seen these on a large scale in NL? If we want to build out our subway infrastructure or business district we will look at London and take best practises. I am baffeled London does not do the same when it comes to bike storage
Unfortunately you can have as good as lock as you want here but the thieves go around with angle grinders. A gold class D lock will deter thieves if the bike looks skanky, but if it's a nice bike in a public place, they'll wait for an opportune moment and be through that lock in max 1 min.
there are thieves in the Netherlands too, however people have the opportunity to lock their bikes safely against proper bike racks and have the opportunity of storing their bikes in bike garages. if so many people have the same problem, it's systemic in nature so it requires systemic solutions.

Cyclist should be taxed on the differential between what they get fron the Council in terms of infrastructure and what they give in terms of vat on petrol to the central government. Friend of mine paid annually for a secure storage at the local tram station. Locked with security cameras and thieves kicked in the outer door and the inner door to steal 3 bikes, (including his) turns out the cameras aren't monitored and bikes are not insured so what was the point?. Never bothered using it again!!

I've had my bike for nearly 6 years. Second hand bike £50. Kryptonite D lock gold standard sold secure £50. Kryptonite lock cable £15. Abus ivy gold standard sold secure chain lock: £50. It's more trouble than it's worth cutting through all of that for a second hand bike on the police register. It was a fellow Dutch student who told me to use a D lock and a chain lock and different brands as the theif will have to come with a full tool kit for different locks. Someone really determined will make quick work with a mini angle grinder....about 5 minutes. The Brompton goes inside and locked to an immovable object.... Not your desk unless it is welded to the floor.

Being a cyclist from a city that is home to one of the major German car manufacturers and where "car is king" was the credo of traffic planning for the last 60 years, I can tell you these are London's problems only and they are nothing but bizarre. Here, most houses have bike racks in front of them or in the backyard, or garages and even dedicated bike cellars, and unless you live in a particularly small flat, there is room in the corridor or on the balcony to store your bike. There are no fees in any German city or community to park your bike outside. Of course bikes get stolen, even from bike cellars, but that's what you have insurance for. It's "car first" infrastructure that prevents people from using their bikes more, not parking fees and theft.
Riding a bike was frowned upon as early as in the 1930s and the car was the future. We have gone backwards because greener cars took so long and roads are so tight and cramped. Rather be in a warm zero emmission car with wide roads, and ride a bike for fun at the weekends

I worked in London for 12yrs and lost 6 bikes to theft. Once a whole bike rack was taken on Tottenham Court Road whilst I got takeaway for 5mins, once it was locked in my backyard in a guarded compound. In the end I chained it to my bed and never ever left it outside only home and work car park.

Highlander here. I like looking out my window and not even seeing my neighbors. Once the leaves fall I can make out a white dot of the house next door. But in general is awful up here, not even worth a visit. Stay in the south is what I recommend you do.
Can we not just start a massive campaign of catching bike thieves. They are pretty easy to catch, all the police have to do is leave an expensive bike somewhere and wait. Make it clear that honeypots are being used and put people in jail or deport them to Rwanda for all I care.
London's cycle provisions leave a lot to be desired but they're still a fair bit better than the average British city. You sound quite passionate about the place. It's a big city, I wouldn't paint it with one brush
Simple solution, build those storage facilities stacked multistory with a lockable door 2,5 more paces. Then place a rollable garagedoor in front. Look at trainstations in the netherlands
In the middle east the punishment for theft is far greater heck just the punishment for attempted theft is worse than youre likely to get for actual theft in the UK first time round.
News flash, this is happening with motorcycles as well in London as thief's are running rampant around London for anything on two wheels. Seems the government need to do something to address the root cause of the problems not just stick bandages on it as I bet you a thief get past the locks of these storage units just as quick with a cordless grinder.
This isn't just a London issue although cycling is more accessible in London, due to the better standard of cycle lanes the capital has. Theft levels are high in the midlands too and no doubt elsewhere. Plus vandalism - not sure whether this is unsuccessful theives, drunks or just cycle haters (which we do seem to have a lot of in the UK) is rife. Leave your bike in street parking at a railway station and if it isn't stolen the wheels will have been kicked beyond repair. The UK needs to do so much more to support cyclists. Lots more cycle lanes - and with proper segragation, secure storage and educating drivers about the new highway code changes which do protect cyclists a little more...if only drivers (and cyclists) know about them.
I live in Salisbury Wiltshire, own 3 bikes. There all locked in a shed. I cycle on many country lanes, not a great deal of traffic. The air is clean. Reasons why I moved away for the city are all above.

@@Warentester Systematic responses to transportation require investment and are amortized over time. They need comprehensive commitment and facilitation. Otherwise nothing works well, as we see before us. Brommies are overpriced, but that is artificial and the form is pretty solid in its niche. ? Full size bike is not niche as well? 16 and 20 inch wheels are OK in city, and pretty capable, if a bit overweight and pretty portable for anyone with health enough to ride them, laterally folding foldies, not so much, but do able.
One of many problems. The government needs to get a move on making cycling safer and more a part of everyday life. More bikes leads to, audibly quieter roads, visibly less busy roads, more space, safer roads, less wear and tear on the roads, cleaner air, fitter people leading to lowered pressure on the healthcare system, more time as people won't be waiting for buses, greater convenience, lower travel costs for short distances, greater mental health, no taxes. People will always need cars for many trips, but there is so much space for growth with cycling. Lots of people are put off by cycling simply because they see it as fitness and therefor hard work, but once you get into a routine, cycling requires very little effort with a bike set up right.
It all starts with enforcing the law. The police are not enforcing the law, so if your bike gets stolen, it is what it is. People are literally having trucks stolen off of construction sites and the police can't be bothered even thought they literally have the criminals on camera. This is way deeper than just bikes and bike storage.

Get rid of parking spaces. 6 bikes take up less space than 1 car. More bike storage = more bikes. More bikes = less cars Less cars = more space More space = more bike storage. We've let auto mobiles be the driving force in decisions for far too long.
I parked my bike in the street in London for 6.5 years. In that time it got stolen twice. At the price mentioned here that would cost £700, which is more than the bikes cost. It's a great idea but the price is too high. It's out of all proportion to the actual cost of the bike cover thing.
A car takes up enough space to store at least 10 bikes, yet car parking is often free but cyclists have to pay money and be treated like second-class citizens. Totally backwards

Road is for the public, its not restricted to just anyone unless you don't own a vehicle. We're all paying to build and maintain the roads. Unfortunately even people who aren't even physically or mentally able still end up paying tax to help the economy which most of it gets wasted by our silly government.

It's in the video. 60,000 people are prepared to pay for hangars, we're on the waiting lists. But we can't install them ourselves because the council needs to give permission. It would generate a profit for the local boroughs too. The only people to object are car drivers because one car uses the space for six or eight bikes, and they're selfish.

I'm in Camden. I live on the fourth floor and carry my bike upstairs every day because I've had two bikes stolen. There are hangers and I've applied, but I've been told that the waiting list is three years. Take my money! I'm begging.

I'm currently in Hungary visiting family. Here they don't have this bad of a problem. There is a huge amount of trust within communities. When you see food delivery people they'll often leave the key in the ignition of their bike. You'll also see a few parked cars with the window down. Also, council spending on local areas seems to be much more efficient then in the UK.
Hungarian government says it has almost halved the crime rate since 2013. Unfortunately it's a massively corrupt and authoritarian government so it's probably a lie.
a fold down wood board attached to the wall helps to move bikes back and forth with stairs.. Our bridges have metal slots to run your tires up as you walk up the stairs.
I think i would still rather have my bike in my house than on the street in one of those containers . i'm sure someone will figure out how to open them and steal the bikes . the only real safety is dont leave your bike outside ever and or get a dedicated insurance policy ,not one that is attached to your house insurance and make sure it will give full replacement cost at todays prices .
its taking it inside and out of the house that is hard work. i always took mine inside despite having a storage spot next to the bin wheelie . the one time i decided to chain it to a pole. theives snatched everything except the rear wheel .
Please don't put oil on your chain as lubricant, it just gets everywhere collects grit and destroys everything, it needs to be waxed. I think if people make a little area to maintain a bike, just enough to wipe down and remove/swap chains around its very beneficial to maintaining it. Just learning to remove and replace a chain with a rivet tool makes such a big difference as you can then wipe it and the whole bike down so much easier.
UK government is always two steps behind. Its no longer a shock to me, wasted tax funds aka the biggest legal scam that people who make the rules get away with.
i live in amsterdam and we use special bike lanes and parking places special for them. When you go to centrail station there you can see a lot of bikes stacked on each other.
I grew up in a second floor maisonette in South London. For my entire youth, I hauled one bike or another up four flights of stairs. I am alive. They're gonna be ok.
Not feasible in many houses. Doors, hallways and stairs are often very narrow making it very difficult to carry a bike inside, unless it's a folding bike or ultralight bike. Also, you're likely to damage the walls, door, frame or bannister in the process, which can be a clear no-go for those of us who are renting.
@@tctech5238 I think you misunderstood my overall point I wasnt saying you should use them or consider using them (Government approved E scooters) I just dislike the fact the Government and TFL are trying to con the public by forcing people to use their 1s while claiming that they want to get people out of their cars. Ownership of E scooters solves so many problems. I remember when The Prius allowed people to not pay the congestion charge now they claim the 1st generation Prius is a polluting car. If everyone started buying push scooters theyll find a way to ban that too.
Carrying your bike up and down a few stairs is no big deal. If you really like cycling you'll get on with it. I take my bike up and down two flights of stairs at least twice a day and it's not that awkward.

This is based on engine power and emissions. Cyclists have neither engine power nor emissions, so even if they were to be taxed, it would be in the lowest rate tax band. Yes, £0. And since it would cost money to administer this, that cost would be added to your tax bill. That’s right, the road upkeep is paid for by your council tax. And cyclists, since they too live in houses, also pay council tax.
in Brighton I used to keep my bike inside, but then one day I left it locked up outside and never went back. the problem is it ruins your bike. if I had a nice bike I wouldn't want to do that so I understand the dilemma. I think even sheltered places to lock your bike would be good, or massive bike parks at stations etc.
If your bike cost a hundred quid and looks it then yeah it's ideal. But even a cheap bike that is clean and looked after will be taken by a junky who knows no better if it's in the same place every day. If they think they can make a quick £20 it will be gone.

A friend couple who live in a city-centre apartment block are a bit worried because of the number of other residents who bought pedelecs/ebikes during lockdown but have nowhere appropriate to store them securely apart from in their flats. They say it's only a matter of time till there's a Li-ion battery fire - unpredictable, difficult to put out and very toxic.

Foldable, compact bicycles are needed, that are lightweight, easy to carry and fast in unfolding / folding. Also, provide rails instead of such huge covers, to chain these folded (and locked) cycles on. Design thinking involving people, will help.
Dude it's like they've not even heard of foldable bikes! come on now it's literally the same price and can be stored on trains, in buses, under a table, under your bed, in a small corner closet, behind the door, etc etc. Plus much easier to fold and carry up and down stairs.

No question that foldables are great for individual transport and commute for many who feel comfortable on one, but they aren't helping to replace a lot of other trips cars are currently used for. You can't transport children on most foldables, so school run isn't covered. Also front and back panier racks for large bike bags to transport the weekly shop aren't an option on foldables.
Toronto, Canada here. Same problem in all big cities. Toronto has made a law that all new condos and apartments must have underground parking for bicycles not just cars. My wife and I bought a two bedroom condo so our second bedroom could store our four expensive road bikes safely, With a Murphy bed and rack storage, lots of room for bikes and guests. Our other two cheap city bikes are in the garage bike storage under lock and key with 24/7 camera. Bike parking outdoors is not viable since you need to have ready access to your bike and prevent deterioration due to the elements. Also, there is not enough room to build the storage units outside to satisfy the demand. I await a solution.
The serious issue is how this us leaving so many people at risk of fire death owing to blockages on the home, but and I'm gonna say it, people still have cars as well as bikes!
These problems really don't exist for riders of high-end bikes. No way, I'd park my bike out of my sight...even for errands. It comes inside with me wherever I go.

Lived there for decades. Always had to drag my bike indoors, often up a flight or two of stairs. Having more storage might encourage a few more people to cycle but that's not the real barrier is it? It's the street layouts and the way people drive that put off cyclists.
How I cycle. quiet roads or roads with designated cycle lanes. It takes longer but still faster than the train or bus in my borough). Avoid roundabouts with more than one lane. There's a big one by Wandsworth Bridge but it does have designated cycle paths around it. Much to my relief. And for the love of God and Death stay out of the blind spot on the left of High sided SUVs, Lorries, Vans and buses. Be extra cautious at junctions or get off and take the pedestrian crossing. The junction with Putney Hill, Putney High street and the Upper Richmond Road/South circular is a death trap. I've seen way too many smash ups with cars, buses, motorbikes and lorries there to risk it on a bicycle. You have right turning buses and traffic, two lanes going into one and two buses side by side overlapping the bike lane. I avoid like the plague unless it is quiet and late at night after 8 pm.
Imagine if... Someone bought a property in some areas in London. They kitted it out with access controls, CCTV, patrols, and multi storey bike racks. They added a cafe and a bike repair shop/bike hire/bike sales place to it. Add some showers, lockers and changing facilities. Charge a monthly fee for access. Et voila, you've got yourself a cycle business that I guarantee in a big city would rack up some major interest.
What's the big deal? I was doing this 30 years ago. Bikes should be kept inside anyway or they deteriorate. That woman saying it was 'exhausting' carrying her bike downstairs really was a bit pathetic.
Same here, a bike locker would be nice- the car park in front of my building occupies an area as large as the building! If you can set aside all of that land for the sole purpose of storing motorvehicles, you can find space for some bike lockers! Cars get entirely too much space and infrastructure, how about sharing the street with others?
Sadiq Khan has implemented a programme of traffic worsening measures to encourage “cleaner” travel one being cycling. Such is the dire state of policing that merely storing a bicycle is an issue, riding it more dangerous on the (now) busier roads plus the added threat of theft whilst actually riding. Should you arrive safely on your bike (assuming not stolen from home or in transit) where will you leave it with a hope in hell of it being there on your return? These are issues Khan needs to address before any moves to make driving even more unpleasant.

I'm carrying my bicycle too here in Izmir Turkey when I'm in metro train stations to go up and down using staircases since lifts are reserved and give priorities to disabled

After going nowhere due to the pandemic, I managed to save the money for the Brompton so it worked out for me. If it's not at home with me, it's locked up and work indoors to an immovable object, usually the stair railings. yes I lock it at work because I know people who had their bikes stolen from inside the work building because some nupty left the door open. Yes I have it insured, it cost the same as a small car!

Fully support this - I had two bikes stolen in London from outside my front door, and I was on the waiting list for a bike hanger spot for 3 years. Naturally, 3 months after I moved out of London I got an email saying a space had become available.
I used to live in Tokyo and bike parking facilities were amazing. Such a shame that in London we don't do everything we can to encourage as many people as possible to cycle. It's not just the climate - it means safer streets, fewer cars and congestion, cleaner air locally and healthier residents.
The problem is bike crime. It'll get nicked within a week.
Bike theft is part and parcel of living in a "vibrant" and "diverse" city. Tokyo is mostly Japanese, ie monoethnic. Hence it has less crime.

the parking problem isn't really about when you're home, I've kept mine inside my home in the past, slightly annoying but its fine. Its once you're out and about or commuting there's no where safe OR convenient to lock them up. because of this I often end up walking if its local, or driving if its to far. This problem stems directly from thieves, not storage, storage doesn't even keep your bike safe. London's crime problem has got wildly out of control in the past 8 years. I suggest they work on solving that, maybe then we can start reducing the dependence on cars in London. sadly though, I don't think our problems are going to vanish any time soon... or ever tbh.
I live in the Midlands outside of even a city here. About 2 years ago two of my friends where out mountain biking rode through the local park and had a machete pulled out on them and couple thousand in bikes taken. Police did absolutely nothing even though the dudes face is clearly in video, like absolutely crisp clean imagine machete in hand. The theft of bikes is an issue UK wide. City or not.
My shed got broken into for my bike a year ago that's behind a 10 foot fence, gravel driveway, flood lights and then break into the locked shed. Luckily I had two locks chaining about 5 bikes together which they tried to get at and did, but I guess I either spooked them (I was still awake and somehow didn't see them) or they figured they couldn't get it back over my gate. No amount of reasonable security stops it
Bottom line is if it's not a person they don't care too badly, property is replaceable, we don't live in the US where you can defend you property to the death. You've just gotta let it get taken

Pretty easy to catch em. Just start doing "bait bikes" with trackers in them and arrest the perpetrators. After a while of doing that, word will get around and it will definitely improve the theft rates.

Motorcycles have the same issues and they also get stolen but they even pay road tax! If you ask me, cyclists should at the very least pay road tax like every other road user !

@@max11111able it isn't about fairness. It's about what sort of society we want to become. The US decided it wanted everyone to drive everywhere. But many see the benefits of incentivising cycling to improve traffic, air quality, and public health.
I live in the Netherlands and will share the tips that work here.
The lock should be as expensive as the bike. 2 or 3 locks are normal, 1 to lock the front wheel to the frame, 1 to lock the back wheel to the frame and 1 to lock the bike to a pole or tree or fence or to another bike.
If you want to put it inside and you live upstairs use the space above the stairs with a pulley system to lift the bike up above your head. Its an investment but worth it. 2-3 bikes should fit. If its very high you can get more bikes up by lifting by only the front wheel.
At this point just move out of the city, who wants to live with so many people who don't care about you and want to steal your things

Unfortunately ceiling height is very low in most UK flats. I love the idea of using the space under the ceiling, but pulling the bike up is not an option that works in many UK houses.
A fellow dutch student told me that it needed to be triple-locked with two different kinds of locks. My locks (£125)costs more than my regular bike.( secondhand £50). Now the electric brompton that get's triple locked indoors. If I'm really neurotic, I can insist it goes in the office with the safe. Lol! I just lock it to the stairs at work out of everyone's way.

At the bigger branches in the chain, you can bring your full size non folding bike indoors. people keep them under the stairs. So I have a folding bike that I keep indoors at work chained to the stairs. In case we get any unexpected visitors snooping around the back of the supermarket. ( has happened before)

I'm 16 seconds in and as a cyclist who does not live in London i can tell you 2 things. 1) this is not just a problem in London but you can buy wall mounts to store bikes in your living room, hallway etc and 2) it is much easier to move a bike around on the back wheel only. Don't try to pick it up and then walk down stairs. You will eventually hurt yourself one way or another
I do live in London and I work in a bike shop dealing with people's commuter bikes and so I feel I am well placed to explain to you why what you've said is totally innacurate. 1: most people's commuting bikes (or bikes that they use as their only vehicle) have full mudguards and, as such, it's not possible to wheel them down stairs on the back wheel without causing damage.
2: there is not space in most flats (which is what London is mostly comprised of) to mount bikes on the wall and, furthermore, doing so is deceptively consuming of space, often at the expense of a kitchen table, sofa or desk (especially pertinent as most people have of late been encouraged to work from home).
3: Seeing as you don't live in London your opinion is totally irrelevant and offers no insight whatsoever into this growing problem.

Insurance for expensive bikes
Undergound bicycle parking
Etc...
What is being suggested here, the type of storage, will NOT work. Have you ever seen these on a large scale in NL?
If we want to build out our subway infrastructure or business district we will look at London and take best practises.

Unfortunately you can have as good as lock as you want here but the thieves go around with angle grinders. A gold class D lock will deter thieves if the bike looks skanky, but if it's a nice bike in a public place, they'll wait for an opportune moment and be through that lock in max 1 min.
there are thieves in the Netherlands too, however people have the opportunity to lock their bikes safely against proper bike racks and have the opportunity of storing their bikes in bike garages.

Locked with security cameras and thieves kicked in the outer door and the inner door to steal 3 bikes, (including his) turns out the cameras aren't monitored and bikes are not insured so what was the point?. Never bothered using it again!!
Thank you to anyone campaigning to get cycling easier for Londoners. I love cycling in London and I have noticed a big improvement in the infrastructure since I have started cycling.
It's sad that this is even necessarily. Gone are the days where you could leave a bike laying on the street.

I've had my bike for nearly 6 years. Second hand bike £50. Kryptonite D lock gold standard sold secure £50. Kryptonite lock cable £15. Abus ivy gold standard sold secure chain lock: £50. It's more trouble than it's worth cutting through all of that for a second hand bike on the police register. It was a fellow Dutch student who told me to use a D lock and a chain lock and different brands as the theif will have to come with a full tool kit for different locks. Someone really determined will make quick work with a mini angle grinder....about 5 minutes. The Brompton goes inside and locked to an immovable object.... Not your desk unless it is welded to the floor.
It's crap, the whole country over, our culture is all wrong, we need to break down the barriers to why people don't ride and change the attitude that the car is king

Being a cyclist from a city that is home to one of the major German car manufacturers and where "car is king" was the credo of traffic planning for the last 60 years, I can tell you these are London's problems only and they are nothing but bizarre. Here, most houses have bike racks in front of them or in the backyard, or garages and even dedicated bike cellars, and unless you live in a particularly small flat, there is room in the corridor or on the balcony to store your bike. There are no fees in any German city or community to park your bike outside. Of course bikes get stolen, even from bike cellars, but that's what you have insurance for. It's "car first" infrastructure that prevents people from using their bikes more, not parking fees and theft.
Riding a bike was frowned upon as early as in the 1930s and the car was the future. We have gone backwards because greener cars took so long and roads are so tight and cramped. Rather be in a warm zero emmission car with wide roads, and ride a bike for fun at the weekends

I worked in London for 12yrs and lost 6 bikes to theft.
Once a whole bike rack was taken on Tottenham Court Road whilst I got takeaway for 5mins, once it was locked in my backyard in a guarded compound. In the end I chained it to my bed and never ever left it outside only home and work car park.

This isn't just a London issue although cycling is more accessible in London, due to the better standard of cycle lanes the capital has.
Theft levels are high in the midlands too and no doubt elsewhere.
Plus vandalism - not sure whether this is unsuccessful theives, drunks or just cycle haters (which we do seem to have a lot of in the UK) is rife. Leave your bike in street parking at a railway station and if it isn't stolen the wheels will have been kicked beyond repair.
The UK needs to do so much more to support cyclists. Lots more cycle lanes - and with proper segragation, secure storage and educating drivers about the new highway code changes which do protect cyclists a little more...if only drivers (and cyclists) know about them.

I live in Salisbury Wiltshire, own 3 bikes. There all locked in a shed. I cycle on many country lanes, not a great deal of traffic. The air is clean. Reasons why I moved away for the city are all above.
A Brompton is definitely the answer for many in this situation. The slightly higher cost would pay for itself quite quickly.
Riding a folding bike simply isn't for everyone.

@@Warentester Systematic responses to transportation require investment and are amortized over time. They need comprehensive commitment and facilitation. Otherwise nothing works well, as we see before us. Brommies are overpriced, but that is artificial and the form is pretty solid in its niche. ? Full size bike is not niche as well? 16 and 20 inch wheels are OK in city, and pretty capable, if a bit overweight and pretty portable for anyone with health enough to ride them, laterally folding foldies, not so much, but do able.
One of many problems. The government needs to get a move on making cycling safer and more a part of everyday life.
More bikes leads to, audibly quieter roads, visibly less busy roads, more space, safer roads, less wear and tear on the roads, cleaner air, fitter people leading to lowered pressure on the healthcare system, more time as people won't be waiting for buses, greater convenience, lower travel costs for short distances, greater mental health, no taxes.
People will always need cars for many trips, but there is so much space for growth with cycling. Lots of people are put off by cycling simply because they see it as fitness and therefor hard work, but once you get into a routine, cycling requires very little effort with a bike set up right.
It all starts with enforcing the law.
The police are not enforcing the law, so if your bike gets stolen, it is what it is.
People are literally having trucks stolen off of construction sites and the police can't be bothered even thought they literally have the criminals on camera.
This is way deeper than just bikes and bike storage.

I parked my bike in the street in London for 6.5 years. In that time it got stolen twice. At the price mentioned here that would cost £700, which is more than the bikes cost. It's a great idea but the price is too high. It's out of all proportion to the actual cost of the bike cover thing.
A car takes up enough space to store at least 10 bikes, yet car parking is often free but cyclists have to pay money and be treated like second-class citizens. Totally backwards

It's in the video. 60,000 people are prepared to pay for hangars, we're on the waiting lists. But we can't install them ourselves because the council needs to give permission. It would generate a profit for the local boroughs too. The only people to object are car drivers because one car uses the space for six or eight bikes, and they're selfish.

I'm currently in Hungary visiting family. Here they don't have this bad of a problem.
There is a huge amount of trust within communities.
When you see food delivery people they'll often leave the key in the ignition of their bike. You'll also see a few parked cars with the window down.
Also, council spending on local areas seems to be much more efficient then in the UK.

the only real safety is dont leave your bike outside ever and or get a dedicated insurance policy ,not one that is attached to your house insurance and make sure it will give full replacement cost at todays prices .
its taking it inside and out of the house that is hard work. i always took mine inside despite having a storage spot next to the bin wheelie . the one time i decided to chain it to a pole. theives snatched everything except the rear wheel .
Please don't put oil on your chain as lubricant, it just gets everywhere collects grit and destroys everything, it needs to be waxed. I think if people make a little area to maintain a bike, just enough to wipe down and remove/swap chains around its very beneficial to maintaining it. Just learning to remove and replace a chain with a rivet tool makes such a big difference as you can then wipe it and the whole bike down so much easier.

i live in amsterdam and we use special bike lanes and parking places special for them. When you go to centrail station there you can see a lot of bikes stacked on each other.

Not feasible in many houses. Doors, hallways and stairs are often very narrow making it very difficult to carry a bike inside, unless it's a folding bike or ultralight bike. Also, you're likely to damage the walls, door, frame or bannister in the process, which can be a clear no-go for those of us who are renting.
Meanwhile e-scooters that take up 1/4 of the space are completely banned …

I wasnt saying you should use them or consider using them (Government approved E scooters) I just dislike the fact the Government and TFL are trying to con the public by forcing people to use their 1s while claiming that they want to get people out of their cars.

And since it would cost money to administer this, that cost would be added to your tax bill. That’s right, the road upkeep is paid for by your council tax. And cyclists, since they too live in houses, also pay council tax.

in Brighton I used to keep my bike inside, but then one day I left it locked up outside and never went back. the problem is it ruins your bike. if I had a nice bike I wouldn't want to do that so I understand the dilemma. I think even sheltered places to lock your bike would be good, or massive bike parks at stations etc.

A friend couple who live in a city-centre apartment block are a bit worried because of the number of other residents who bought pedelecs/ebikes during lockdown but have nowhere appropriate to store them securely apart from in their flats. They say it's only a matter of time till there's a Li-ion battery fire - unpredictable, difficult to put out and very toxic.

Foldable, compact bicycles are needed, that are lightweight, easy to carry and fast in unfolding / folding. Also, provide rails instead of such huge covers, to chain these folded (and locked) cycles on. Design thinking involving people, will help.

School and shopping, with multiple children of different ages, this just wouldn't work for them, London is a joke.
No question that foldables are great for individual transport and commute for many who feel comfortable on one, but they aren't helping to replace a lot of other trips cars are currently used for. You can't transport children on most foldables, so school run isn't covered. Also front and back panier racks for large bike bags to transport the weekly shop aren't an option on foldables.
Toronto, Canada here. Same problem in all big cities. Toronto has made a law that all new condos and apartments must have underground parking for bicycles not just cars. My wife and I bought a two bedroom condo so our second bedroom could store our four expensive road bikes safely, With a Murphy bed and rack storage, lots of room for bikes and guests. Our other two cheap city bikes are in the garage bike storage under lock and key with 24/7 camera.
Bike parking outdoors is not viable since you need to have ready access to your bike and prevent deterioration due to the elements. Also, there is not enough room to build the storage units outside to satisfy the demand. I await a solution.

The serious issue is how this us leaving so many people at risk of fire death owing to blockages on the home, but and I'm gonna say it, people still have cars as well as bikes!
But it will still be the Landlords fault, just like when a fire starts due to faulty equipment introduced to the property by a Tenant.
These problems really don't exist for riders of high-end bikes. No way, I'd park my bike out of my sight...even for errands. It comes inside with me wherever I go.
We are healthier, less of strain to the health system. We are less harmful to the environment and yet we are treated like second class citizens left to the wolves. Poor protection for cyclists on roads. Thieves who feast on the cycling community with zero action from police services.
It's because when you get to work you smell of sweat.
'Cycling community' 🤣 please tell me what you think the police can do. Have you got your bicycle registered to you? Does it have documentation that states it is, in fact, your bike? How do you expect the already understaffed police to go around looking out for your bicycle? It is your job to ensure the safety of your own property.
I used to do this way back in 2006 in bangalore india, when my cycle gears was targeted by a thief.
Why on earth would you live in London and put yourself willingly through this misery? Unless you’re at least on a 200 k income the place is unbearable.

Lived there for decades. Always had to drag my bike indoors, often up a flight or two of stairs.
Having more storage might encourage a few more people to cycle but that's not the real barrier is it?
It's the street layouts and the way people drive that put off cyclists.
How I cycle. quiet roads or roads with designated cycle lanes. It takes longer but still faster than the train or bus in my borough). Avoid roundabouts with more than one lane. There's a big one by Wandsworth Bridge but it does have designated cycle paths around it. Much to my relief. And for the love of God and Death stay out of the blind spot on the left of High sided SUVs, Lorries, Vans and buses. Be extra cautious at junctions or get off and take the pedestrian crossing. The junction with Putney Hill, Putney High street and the Upper Richmond Road/South circular is a death trap. I've seen way too many smash ups with cars, buses, motorbikes and lorries there to risk it on a bicycle. You have right turning buses and traffic, two lanes going into one and two buses side by side overlapping the bike lane. I avoid like the plague unless it is quiet and late at night after 8 pm.
Imagine if...
Someone bought a property in some areas in London.
They kitted it out with access controls, CCTV, patrols, and multi storey bike racks.
They added a cafe and a bike repair shop/bike hire/bike sales place to it.
Add some showers, lockers and changing facilities.
Charge a monthly fee for access.
Et voila, you've got yourself a cycle business that I guarantee in a big city would rack up some major interest.

What's the big deal? I was doing this 30 years ago. Bikes should be kept inside anyway or they deteriorate. That woman saying it was 'exhausting' carrying her bike downstairs really was a bit pathetic.
Homes are smaller than they ever were. House shares of six people don't have space for the bikes.
cyclist woman here - it's definitely a heavy lift for many smaller women, this shouldn't be too hard to imagine.
Jeremy Fielding not everyone is 80kg+ and has a 7kg carbon racer lad. Some people are smaller and have to make do with heavy bikes.
Same here, a bike locker would be nice- the car park in front of my building occupies an area as large as the building! If you can set aside all of that land for the sole purpose of storing motorvehicles, you can find space for some bike lockers! Cars get entirely too much space and infrastructure, how about sharing the street with others?
Sadiq Khan has implemented a programme of traffic worsening measures to encourage “cleaner” travel one being cycling. Such is the dire state of policing that merely storing a bicycle is an issue, riding it more dangerous on the (now) busier roads plus the added threat of theft whilst actually riding. Should you arrive safely on your bike (assuming not stolen from home or in transit) where will you leave it with a hope in hell of it being there on your return? These are issues Khan needs to address before any moves to make driving even more unpleasant.
Making driving "more unpleasant" gets more people cycling. Capacity for motor vehicles is being reduced to make space for walking and cycling.

Meanwhile in Japan people leave unlocked bikes on the street, sometimes with full shopping bags in their baskets. Imagine that.

I'm carrying my bicycle too here in Izmir Turkey when I'm in metro train stations to go up and down using staircases since lifts are reserved and give priorities to disabled
I doubt its lack of storage....its lack of trust that it wont he stolen...if you absolutely knew it wont get stolen you would leave in in the lobby or corridor of your apartment.
