Although my grandmother spoke Pennsylvania Dutch, it sounded remarkably like Yiddish.
Maybe because they're both basically german languages?
They have both their origins in South-Western German dialects of the Middle Ages. So not only are they both close to standard German, but both of them are even closer to a particular group of dialects within Germany. Of course Pennsylvania Dutch (= Deutsch=German) is without as many words of Hebrew origin

They mostly sing about its a little jiddish song. Jiddisch is an old language mixed from askennazi jewish and german, less than 1.5 Mil. people speak this today but if you know german you can understand it pretty well.
@@cleanTron yeah, pretty much, it's base is German but it has a salad of all the eastern European languages, like Polish Russian and Hungarian.
The song praises the cultural value of keeping alive this language.

@@michalmazur6818 For me it`s like talking to people from netherlands, at first you understand not much but it sounds kinda familiar. Some words you think it could mean this or that and then your understanding disturbs but its an old language and it means bouth and later it was divided in two words for more exact meanings. Like the phonetic beit nich, it means beisst mich (bite me) aber auch weiss nicht (dosent know). Is ein schene Sprach.

Its interesting that i as a german speaker can understand a lot of this song. If you consider that yiddish is a 900 years old language and the modern german is only a little over 100 years old.
Good remark. Basically, the reason why is that Yiddish hasn't almost change along the centuries. The Torah, Hebrew and this about Yiddish is why jewish people are united and alive, with a great future. Thank you for your comment.
Yiddish continued changing throughout the years. Although Judeo-German/Yiddish is old, this song is not from 900 years ago.

@@Kullioking You were surprised you understand the song since the language is 900 years old, but the language of this song is much more recent - so it makes perfect sense you would understand it. Yiddish was developing well into the 20th century, so it modernized along with modern German, although in a different way.I always find it ironic when Germans are like surprised that Yiddish is similar to German. Just because so many Jews were killed, it's not like all that came before never happened.

Irgendwie schmerzt es als Deutscher diese Musik zu hören und zu wissen das unsere Vorfahren ihnen das schlimmste angetan haben was man einen Menschen antun kann. Und dennoch singen sie Lieder auf Deutsch. Ich Frage mich oft ob die Jüdische Bevölkerung uns noch hasst für das was ihnen angetan wurde.
