  • Foster Farms - Chicken Diaper Scam. Bought this Foster Farms chicken at Fred Meyer, a Kroger affiliate, and it had a huge meat pad in it - so large that it resembled a diaper - weighing almost a pound. Out of a total package weight of 5.63 pounds, this 14.1 ounce diaper made up almost 16% of the package or $0.88 out of a package total of $5.63. And this diaper is pure garbage. Bottom line, Foster Farms is selling us garbage with no other intent but to have us throw it away. Maybe they should advertise “Fill your local landfill - free garbage in every package!" Share or send us your consumer rip-off experiences!

Just a bit of education for you. Chicken doesn't bleed like you might think, the chicken is drained of blood. What's left of moisture in the chicken gets absorbed by it, especially when you defrost the chicken. The chicken is always frozen to prevent the growth of salmonella, when the chicken is frozen, it develops ice, when it melts it turns into liquid. You never have a red pad (or diaper as you call it). Those pads are used to absorb the liquid that is created by the defrosting process so it doesn't leak all over the place for your convenience.

Thanks for your comment and information.
I believe all slaughtered animals are drained of blood and processed quickly before any refrigeration or freezing. And freezing does not necessarily allow for the absorption extra water. However I believe as part of Foster Farms processing, water is added and it cheats the customer when its included as a non-consumable portion of what we buy. 20 years ago the meat pads were an insignificant part of the total package - 16% is way, way, too much. What's changed?
Maybe Foster Farms can demonstrate how they process their carcasses prior to packaging, then we all can learn something.
      Thanks again,

Just to be clear; I don't need education when I'm fixing dinner; I need chicken. I don't need a diaper full of water. The diaper in my package weighed 16 oz. That's a pound. The whole thing cost $1.50/pound. So I'm not terribly upset that the diaper cost me $1.50; I'm just concerned that they were selling chicken and not used diapers. The original post is accurate: they are being dishonest. Period, Crooks.
