- If you're one of the rare souls who decides to take a trip to Guyana, the least visited country in the Americas, chances are your first stop will be Georgetown, the capital city. With a population of only around 200,000, it looks and feels almost like a small town. But this city is no joke. With the newfound oil wealth driving prices up, crime is starting to skyrocket. Although everyone in Guyana suffers from theft, American oil workers and Chinese merchants in particular are hunted in the streets by muggers. I was no oil worker, but I was assumed to be one.

If you were of a slightly older generation, or had attended the previous school system in Kenya, then you would know that the first black judge of the High Court of Kenya, Cecil Henry Ethelwood Miller, who arrived in Kenya in 1964, was also from Georgetown, British Guyana. He also served as Chief Justice during very politically-charged years in Kenya (the country was virtually a police state then) that the younger generation has absolutely no knowledge or understanding of.

Guyana has been into dance hall for centuries now. Only because we are not represented like other places like Jamaica, T&T and Barbados but we are very up to date with a lot of things. Glad someone saw fit to show our country and our culture. Glad others got to see that we are more than their so called Third world 🌎 country.

Guyana seems so much like 🇯🇲 to me. Just seeing the kids in their uniforms, feels so nostalgic. I don't think I would ever be homesick if I visit there.

The darker coconut oil is used for skin and hair. The clear virgin coconut oil is used for cooking (can also be used on skin and hair). The pastry is called Chinese cake or "chiney cake" (pronounced chi-knee) in the Guyanese patwa/creole. It is of Chinese origin, but the Guyanese version is made with a short-crust pastry and black eyed peas instead of black beans.

Guyanese will tell you about how many thieves there are and to be careful walking around with electronics in Guyana or jewelry. I’ve been traveling there for over 10 years now and have never been victimized. And I walk in the most precarious areas.

Lol I never knew Guyana was dangerous either My parents are from their and I go there every summer. I had to google to confirm but allegedly it’s true. I was going to bars with my cousins at 15 never saw anything crazy 🤷♂️
I walked around Georgetown at around noon and was robbed within 30 minutes. They gave back my phone and hotel key, but kept the 1500 GYD.
I also had 5000 GYD in my shoe I didn't tell them about haha.
This happened just today actually, I'm back in my hotel.
I have no valuables on me. Just my phone that I took out every now and then to take photos. I'm white from USA.

It no different that how people speak in the different states of America speaks with different accents. Plus, even in United Kingdom with the English, Wales and Scots. Guyana was formerly named British Guiana which means we learn the English from Britain, of course, without the British accent.
Island accent, very similar to Jamaican (and many a Caribbean island) patois.

FYI- Ectomorph is a body type that is described as tall and slim, with narrow shoulders and a low muscle mass percentage. In general, people with an ectomorph body type have a fast metabolism and tend to lose weight easily. However, they do have more difficulty building muscle.

Most Indo Guyanese and Indo Mauritians are actual relatives, since they were sourced from the exact same villages within India.

The east coast of Nicaragua, San Juan all the way south to Limon CR have English as their first Idioma as well. Last I checked here in Rivas, we are in Latin America as well.

Hey, I’m Guyanese-American, and my parents have taken us back to Guyana a few times for vacation. It is so beautiful! But, in recent years, I think things have gotten way more dangerous. A few years ago, I would have recommended going, but rn it is too many robbers killing you for the smallest amount of money in your pocket. Even though you have Guyanese background, they will know right away you’re a foreigner, and you’ll be at risk.
I wish the government was able to make the country a safer place for tourism.
Exact same story here, dude. I randomly had the thought to look at videos of Guyana as I've never given it much thought. No one can tell where I'm from looking at me, so it'll likely be the only place on the planet that I'll experience similar looking people to me.

@@tear6510 I've been to Guyana, Trinidad, and Jamaica before. I've also been to other islands like Barbados, the Bahamas, Aruba and St. Kitts, plus I've lived in both Saba and St Maarten for a bit, too.
The last time we went to Guyana, my family living there had armed security at their front yard at all times. So we did have a security detail , and things felt a little dicey there after dark. It's not the safest place, sorry. I've heard of lots of robberies there. If you do go, always travel in a larger group, and that goes for anywhere you travel. Safety in numbers.
@@MAYBEE90 girl im Guyanese and im home minimum twice a year. I have also been to over 40 countries including the ones you mentioned.. you havent seen real crime.. okay. Guyana isn't even close to how dangerous jameaica and trinidad are. I go to jamaica 2 to 3 times a year and trinidad i only go during carnival and we go nowhere alone bc its so dangerous.. Both jamaica and trinidad have multiple murders and robberies a day.. so stop the cap..most murders in guyana are related to domestic violence. Yes there are robberies and crime, but if you live in the states then just be quiet. No one in guyana or the Caribbean are committing mass murders in schools, movie theaters, concerts, grocery stores etc.

I am romanian and I like very much Guyana.
Says something about Guyana that Tommy can travel across Africa without security, but to walk the capital of Guyana he needs security. Hope their politicians don't pocket all that oil money, should make a follow up video in a few years, see if the place got any better. As someone who works internationally a lot, if the country doesn't improve security, the common Guyanese won't see much money. In low security nations, the international workers just fly in, go to work and fly home. They don't spend in the community. In high security nations, often the international workers will buy property if they have long term employment, then often start families or bring families, and families spend money in the community. Then the wealth spreads better.
South America is significantly more dangerous then Africa. Obviously it depends on the country, but generally speaking, South America is absolutely more dangerous. Just look at statistics.

Some parts of Africa are dangerous as well. He probably didn't go to those parts. It's not like the whole of Africa is so safe that no one has never been robbed or needed security . Some of you are being ridiculous now. Knowing full well crime is everywhere.
@@marciastx4540 You are right of course, there are areas controlled by warlords and gangs that you would die in. However, there were places in Africa Tommy went that had a reputation of danger and were surprisingly better than their reputation. Guyana was sort of the opposite.

My wife is Guyanese and i loved seeing the place i have heard so much about. Her large family is very tight and like to hear me talk to the elders. The stories fit with what you have shown. They have one of my favorite sayings i have ever heard. “Empty barrels make the most noise” the barrel is a person if you didnt pick that up. 😉

We migrated from Guyana to US🇺🇲 over 30 years ago when i was a child, ago but I enjoy visiting and seeing different areas when returning as an Adult. The population is working for a better tomorrow. friends / relatives in Guyana he is still remembered in UK.🙏

The Portuguese also went to Guyana as indentured laborer's as well. My ancestors came from the island of Madeira and immigrated to Guyana after the civil war. After the riots in the 70's, they fled to Barbados.

I went to Guyana in 2017/2018/2019/and last october 2023 each time i stayed 2 weeks minimum, i ve been alone, and one time with my gf, both white, we've been hitchiking, sleeping in hammac outside, got drunk walked home by night in Gtown, Linden and Lethem....and never had any problem....People are exagerating stories in Gtown.....I wonder how the country will turn between his new oil rush and his conflict with Venezuela.

So true! I'm from Florida and just in my small neighborhood alone in Central Florida we had two brothers from Guyana in HS, a good handful of shop owners and businessmen, and my aunt/uncle have Guyanese neighbors who are great family friends. I'm sure the Guyanese people are all over Florida :)

I've been intrigued with Guyana since I seen it on a show called Jungle Gold years back. I always thought it was a country near or in Africa because of the Indian and Black citizens and Chinese influence. Its a very interesting and unusual country.
