BG Olds was my dad's wing commander in the 555th TFW and GEN Daniel "Chappie" James, the first black four-star, was his squadron commander in the 23rd TFS. BG Olds and Chappie were great friends and known affectionately as "Black Man and Robin," two of the finest officers the USAF has ever had. My dad referred to BG Olds as a "crazy sonofabitch" and "one helluva fighter pilot and officer." I met Chappie when he was a Lieutenant Colonel and I was 10 years old. He was one of the kindest and nicest men I've ever met and my dad referred to him as one of the finest officers he's ever known and his officers and airmen loved him.
I recently heard about the "black man and Robin" bit watching a documentary, thought it was hilarious, one thing that came to mind is how offended some people might be hearing that nowadays.
7:13 Staff sergeant Duran here love that I was a crew chief and loved every minute of it. I had QC inspection that had z. D. That's 0 diffects on an inspection. I was proud of my F4. It was an RF 4 C.
Robin just really connects with his audience and had done so much in his life he can go for hours and hours. I really love his sense of humor and his philosophy of "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission."
God bless you General Olds. i don't get tired of listening to your stories you have influenced air-forces around the world who had their pilots trained and flown American jets, including IIAF
After I retired from the Seabees in 2003, I’ve been catching up on Bios of larger than life individuals such as Gen Olds. That caliber of leader was common in his day in all branches. Today not so common. After reading up on Robin Olds I regret not joining the Air Force. Awesome video thank you for sharing.
Get his book, "Fighter Pilot" . Great story about a great man. And he passed up a chance to attain great public notice by refusing to let a famous author do a book about him. And likely a movie. Incredible great American!!!!
just got the book, thankfuly in U.S.A. , amazing man, truly a Peoples person, and a bad ass Pilot. They dont make them like him any more, we could say ! R.I.P. Robin Old's.
@@elbronco80 If he shot down 5 he would have been a Vietnam ace so would have had to go home. Mysteriously he lost the ability to shoot down MIGs, or did he just lose the ability to be credited for them?
@@COIcultist Indeed, Olds even said "Miraculously, I was never able to record another victory." In an interview after his death, his daughter said he would erase his name off the daily mission board. I stood in front of the aircraft last year at the museum, and looked at the description, and Pilot information of the History, in Vietnam, and the exploits of the pilot, and here I am watching all the History...who Knew
Aerospace Utah: Thank you for publishing this video. Even with Christina's publishing of "Fighter Pilot", General Olds has not received his proper credit and role in the history of defining our modern Air Force. Our culture, our programs, our airman mindsets are beholden to his actions, influences and legacy. Thanks again, and if more are available publish!
Amazing man! God only makes man like him so special!!! For the rest of us wonder about! God bless him and family. You notice all amazing man always say my god or my lord!!! ❤️🙏🏻🇺🇸
I was at Ubon in 67 while Gen. Olds was the wing commander. I was an air traffic controller. I do recall when we were recovering a flight where he was the flight leader. During a lull in transmissions, he screamed over the frequency "SHUT UP." I never forgot it. I guess he was hearing some chatter that we could not. No doubt who was in charge.
What a great guy. Not like Chuck Yeager or Steve Richie one that Navy guy who Trumpty Dumpty pardoned. I just wish they had a better microphone. I’m hard of hearing and missed some of the audio. Too many years around jets . Robin Olds was truly one of the greats. Little ego, loved his subordinates, and loved people. Not many like him.
I see that there are 4 "dislikes" for this video. Probably 2 of them from Draft dodgers who ran to Canada. 1 from a guy with PPS "Petite Penis Syndrome" and 1 from a kid looking for cartoon clips.
Then Colonel Robin Olds F-4 phantom and was part of the famed wolfpack squadron is on display at the USAF museum in dayton ohio , Robin is revered as one of the best pilots and leader in the US Air Force , Rest easy sir !
...out of the original 40, eigjt finished the tour... We don't have men like that anymore or politicians who would support such odds to defeat an enemy.

His biography, written by his daughter, is tremendous. It is a very good read.
Thank you!
Just read the book a few weeks ago and it's amazing love it :)
Read it twice , gonna read it again. Great, great book by his daughter.

Good book… that’s why I’m here now.
The one dislike is from one of the MiG pilots he shot down in Vietnam. How in the hell can you dislike this?
people do that because they 'can' to be the first to be jerks....
With 4 dislikes now, it must have been all 4 MiG pilots he shot down in Vietnam.

What a brilliant orator. Superb guy.
He's beloved by his men. That says alot. Leadership.
From the P38 Lightning to the F4 Phantom, Robin chased the bad guys out of the sky. One of Americas finest.
Thank you General

This guy was just like the guys I ran around with most of my life. Irreverent to authority and wonderful.
