  • Populism is on the rise across Europe. In this episode of Governance This Week we explore the root causes of populism, the main differences between populist and traditional parties, and how the latter can react to the success of the former.
Our guest is Professor Tommaso Nannicini, Chair in Political Economy at the Florence School of Transnational Governance. Professor Nannicini has not only extensively researched populism, he is also a former chief economic adviser to the Italian PM, former Under Secretary, and former Senator. In this episode, he explains how he set up a randomised controlled trial to see how traditional parties can respond to populist parties on issues that are particularly fitting for populist messages.

Great talk Professor Nannicini. You gave me some insight. I ask that you please not lose faith in America. The main battle seems to be the already bad and still not improving education system and very poor media/news literacy. It is very easy for those to receive and believe populist ideals. I work in cybersecurity and study state-run and individual perpetuated misinformation and disinformation campaigns in my free time.

Oh look, Davis here speaks for EVERY American. I missed the memo that we elected him as our representative.
Why come here and make us look ignorant? You post baseless claims, no information, like we are just supposed to guess. That's not media literacy. That's idiocracy.
      Do better, Davis.@@davisthedavis

Perhaps populism is also influenced by the continued concentration of capital. Thomas Piketty hinted as such in his book Capital in the Twenty-First Century. Historically, pre-WW1 was also a period of extreme concentration of capital 🤨.
